that's the noon everyone welcome to this debate the candidates for this tradition and then is not my Minister Antonis Pacheco and we are pleased to host this debate sakharova Borough Park is a true community owned and another school and therefore we are honored to open our doors Stephen would be a publisher and the entire staff and come at the end station well show you we live in a democracy in which one of our most basic and cherished rights are that we the people get to vote for our elected officials but with that light comes a responsibility elections have consequences so before I be election we must familiarize ourselves with the issues and with each candidates stand on each issue so that when voting representatives we make the best possible choice this is an important position that these candidates are running for it is very important to both our community until its place this a toto there for which the ultimate winner much house over there are confident that during the next hour and a half or so you will learn everything we need to know about the candidates so that you can make an informed decision on voting thanks to all three participating will not turn the floor over to American atheist political news editor will be moderating the second news thank you I'll be blessed for you thank you Miss a crowbar contraband likely be suspended but it is you haven't done the political editor and have made in this paper in the name of is must've seen the publisher and a midi editorial special I would like to thank you all for joining us today members of the community elected officials dignitaries and the police department a particular mission is one note these accounts have been David Green trend that counts behind eight I will be about a meeting today's debate with we are three panelists very Spitzer just subtract a point and Josh bellman first let me visit three candidates are running in the New York City Council for the forty 12th district common neighbor who is running on the Democratic a conservative lines [Music] [Applause] institution of the political debate has its origins in the Asian weeks and today hundreds in the United States yet it is a modern invention since the 1970s debates have been illuminated for voters and a lot of the candidates to familiarize themselves with the needs of their potential constituents but he has set the goal for today's debate educated voters pay attention to what the government does I would like to keep this to make clear and informative we asked our candidates to give us true sweet answers on the issues and stay away from the platitudes of the campaign trail in addition let's all remember here at today's debate we are sure you will do your best to help us turn into an event of construction let's remember that the younger generation is looking up to us and let's give them a positive memory of campaign 2017 to the audience we appreciate the company and share these important moments in our communities as a show of respect to the event please we ask that there be no applause or heckling we also ask that all cell phones be turn emotion on the rules of today's debate was said in advance the Penn State student arrangements and the order of who speaks was decided by the younger papers by someone unaffiliated defending campaign according to the US results mr. Yeager is sitting on the right I will get to answer first at the first question mr. hikida will be in the center I will end the second and missed additional event left and will answer Thursday for the second question mr. Hyken will get to answer first followed by mr. deschler and mr. Yeager for the third question this initial missed additional woman surfers followed by mr. Gaynor the water for the fourth question that we presented to answer was for the first question candidates that 90 seconds to respond to each question with a 30 second rebuttal if anyone mentions our text another candidate by name there is a countdown clock as well as depend on we'll read when the time sliders up the bell sounds like this I will be audible to the candidates we will begin the debate with an opening statement of two minutes the candidates will be a message to diss themselves to the voters and lay out their platforms this will be followed by 10 questions and complete with a one-minute closing statements for candidates after the debate members of the audience will get time to add some questions to the candidates questions will come the my name is Colin Jaeger and I serve my community for my entire life I began when I was teenagers at age 19 serving six years I worked for a major nonprofit organization for two years ten years after I graduated college I went back to school to earn my living I spend my entire life in public service well in 17 years I've served on community board representing most of those part of this district representing our community's interests [Music] to share with you listen to what the candidates want to give over to you about themselves listen to what the candidates want to portray to you we give you a sense of their vision of what the next four years will hold I think is as serious as we could imagine and I see in the seriousness of their faces area also view a repeat take this serious and you can imagine to me the next four years of this community very likely the pending on what happens over the next nine days and to me being this opportunity to have this chance to talk to everyone here to continue talking to people like I have on the street for the past two months is something that I cannot I cannot express enough how important it is to me how amazing that is and I'm humbled I am I needed the opportunity to be that choice over the next four years it's between like I started and why this is so seriously min because all I've known my whole life yes it is my experience and there's two parts to I believe what you would want or what an elected official should be know how in character and my experience place the boat there's only one thing I've ever known I know [Music] minority in the city we stand for traditional values that define values how would you fight to protect the values of our community my opening I talked about our services and this question is a wonderful segue today as a representative of the community that is part of the sole purpose of what I need to do and what I intend to do I don't know if I agree necessarily to the question themselves because I think that the sage that our community is not valued I think is kind of not entirely the truth I think that there's misunderstanding and I think that our school really is a most beautiful community I think our community stands for values that the rest of the world would rub appreciate and respect as much as anyone else unfortunately number one there's some misunderstanding number two is that sometimes sometimes we don't necessarily have a dialogue to have a chance to discuss what we all have to deal with some of the things that come up that are questions that we need to watch though than that society is aberrated involving society as a whole needs to continue working on this for every community we already need and we need someone who has sensitivity the understanding that the character to be able to articulate the kinis values to others but also not always just call it the ways I think it is si o that we're not being respected but actually understand that they maybe want to respect us if we go about it the right way [Music] all the time our values are beautiful and having the courage and these senses to articulate that to others in the government and not to come with this mentality of automatically coming from him and I just all the time 30-second is only the griot I see in the city that first edge restaurant and just concerned agencies and ability companies example a building inspector and unilaterally issue a stop work order the owner has no recourse or the National Grid and hi Madison and sometimes take them years to say of service this results of people losing thousands of dollars a month or having to move in without getting connected together additionally sometimes after shutting down service I'm at the National Grid to think of time between the back on the Public Service Commission suppose the police these behaviors but it's an agency without opinion what would you propose for civilian companies or the Department of Buildings to have more accountability it's officially I want to I want to [Music] asking raise was the problem is is that a lot of times is very little recourse because the violation that they might have found and then you get the situation they from the letter of the law point of view have the justification to be able to cite that the problem is business spirit of the law and the question is what's the mentality of the only place giving this item and why is it means work work work work I think that at the beginning of my campaign and something that it's been very clear that from day one this has been what it's been about for me from day one actually about individually about that's an interest not about not about political forces that have where I carry boats or every financial strength it's about the individual so people in this situation again back with the spirit of the law and there's a letter of the law we need to be able to come together and fight fight fight five forty four people saying look you might be able to come down to make sure that the state's activities from severe pendency to the people to make sure that it's because the letter of the law and the law says little mention with understanding that's what government service [Music] I just wanna quickly I heard the answer to the city agency problem for improvements but I don't think I need the candidates addressed my concern about utility companies and which kind they can just take 10 seconds or 15 seconds for this point to me how we get people in companies to everyone [Music] when these are all over the place whereas unity is when things like together but what I believe is the answer to many of these question does not require great science this is not some point for the next [Music] because the children not the classifications of property is classified is not going so what we can do is ask the state legislative change the classification but we can't change them on our own [Music] council members who have these modular homes in their district we're gonna get that past we all know the kind of tax situation in some ways it is out of control so what is it be complimented new and with some degrees it's the same thing that I mentioned before we don't have an answer of City Council and this is what we're gonna do on that level on the stage but this is where it counts in a time those councilmen Mark's Raiders this is where you come together and you engage with everyone together any lobby and you lot and you fight because at the end of the day there is nothing that a city council member to do unless they are bringing that force together just like I mentioned by the other person that is on our grand level the only way that we're going to put the pressure on for this whole assessment assessment and evaluation that they go with that they do they go about this will be changed but in the visual assessment there's still the individual YES on the ground level business state particles with me evaluation form in general how this all works we don't always have to just talk about okay what were you doing to change that as a city council member it's what we don't just say loudly loudly model and individuals up over it's it's fighting for that individual when they come through and when that assessment comes know how to go about cutting the red tape dealing with the bureaucratic parts of that and helping each individual who has had I [Music] no crowd of my education my solar energy teyla ronon is education our choices for educational made by our parents and also on any outside Google not give them [Music] in this and I think I think ah computer club mr. Yeager I think it's very nice to be able to say all the right things like yes I have had in town hall meetings I'm the one that has it come and ask let's talk about this because we're not going to handle our challenges without talking about it and I'd like to explain number one if you ft our support and only two how come you have alluded to the logic of himself pushing this office do not lose bargaining robotics which is something I'm not calling mostly himself I said and how the continuous ten diseases but you saying that there's no problem throw to themself but as far back as say that of course there are imperfections there are imperfections and inside we must deal with [Music] well first of all number one great with the taxpayers that would be in the video mobile yes they absolutely I'm a favor they asked me about charter school they said I'm a favor of charter schools and they force so you don't like it you don't have to like it but again ability does like that the baby had like the first one the other - you know - just like that - maybe because they throw fact if you feel like [Music] it was hard and this bill had 200 at the cap and we go and then we and finally in this administration but the number was higher for a lower number of children's fill network there's a security group right outside this receiver so when you are using the advantage of doing 50,000 children across the city of students non-public students have these of this twenty million dollar program so we're going to expand we're going to make the threshold number lower and now that we can prove to these ministration that it works we're going to go in there with a stroller head together I'm trying to see that Brady going for work and in having in-depth conversations with the game council find out who is a very active and moving towards making sure that the 300 threshold ends and you know I think it is kind of a very appropriate question in relation to individuals and other things like that I've been walking the streets in two months I've been walking the streets and I am create cream communes buy what I need and sometimes but I'm already called heads of isis asking them can I ask you a question I want to understand why do the parents feel this way I've had this conversation with some people and there's an answer to it but at the end of the day there's this feeling that that is something that has happened on share experience doesn't it cool Austin doesn't it feel cool often that it's been powerful the big and powerful that get things more often than the individual and the deeper in a smaller well that has to change and the remains [Music] you're actually going through care and yes those who have I don't even understand it's not that I want elected officials who instead of just saying the obvious like as I said just reinventing the wheel that is the standard answer to almost every question I'm referring for years and years and years and years and how come all these challenges has so much potential present and so what I'm saying is maybe we start looking at how we pick our elected officials a little bit differently and we say you know what someone who has proven that all he does is hope I just care about people maybe [Music] we're going to navigate my system recently a Concorde we had a property for months my son almost bought this objection they call that a compliment simplified result is they try to call the Commission Commissioner just like the Roman denarii you can't just quote commissioners I think that works out that way this is system we need to change the system we need to tell them we are the boss we need to change the laws now where they respect us as they change these laws that correction drug-free shoes safer my name is niala shark I Drive for you shoes with Sun safe I'm a bus driver barb mark during my daily rooms I've come across many situations which I feel making the streets less safe and can cause more traffic congestion many of these things are illegal for inside for instance the equals passing blinking lights on school buses or dry dystopian on cellphones while distracted or loved ones these electric scooters which this regatta will matter of traffic rules all of these can contribute to more stress and danger for both drivers and pedestrians what will you candidates do to make our streets safer and the traffic flow more manageable with less villagers particularly during deep school pick-up and drop-off times also one more thing is many bus drivers face of 90 challenge of parking the buses what can be done to address that thank you yes well first of all in terms of what do we have you know less congestion didn't attractive and safer don't have the time to grow detected website the only I think that comment that the smart city initiative I think everyone is also quite familiar with this plan to evade alternate side parking these are examples of things that we have laid out and we have explained and we're now because of time I'm not going to detail about it obviously but to me the questions that you brought up comes back to what I believe is what the people deserve more than ever I think when I said before that I love this community I want to explain what I mean by that even or I have heard so many wonderful ideas I don't believe that any of us should pretend or claim of you or try to convince you that we have or we got smarter led to the average citizen out there we who walk the streets we people drive the buses come together and and talk about this in a way that we will we will figure out and discuss different planets ideas how to encourage optimize because without that there's gonna be a thousand people coming up with thousands ideas like in case it comes up with an idea maybe it's a good idea maybe the people I think maybe they don't maybe a test may go wrong yes town halls yes community engagement I do believe that that is the answer to a lot of things I do believe in the people I believe that bar parking really I believe that in people a collision in word and nothing in other areas I believe it's time that they have engagement from their elected officials so that they can really really play a role in their own challenges and promise I don't believe when I said there's so many times I don't believe the elected officials like hear about this genius answers and the regular citizen discussing get it they just don't understand it's not true the secret is out it's not true we are going to have these town hall meetings which I committed to I said back to one we get on a bus [Music] and they just screw transportation plan you know my colleagues will have different ideas you know that's the date that supposed to work I have a plan [Music] another related question suggesting that the amount of coins or accessible parking [Music] not just a violation show me the right way we sponsor the defense they have used it privileges and that's the personal the serious well you have the right path your hearing is I'm partial to other and that's what city more power he gives unfortunately the agency comes in is that as human action now it's no problem that's why I'm talking about in conserving we hear about home street where you know I clean my house in front of my house - then you know oh good I do it's like somebody got support because I do that one that's not right the officers to do and that'll give us the ability our community being willing to fight those points absolutely sesame right find that offer of building violations 5,000 10,000 15,000 dollars without any common sense whatsoever without importance of whether or not it's actually going to make somewhere safer without a thought of whether or not it's an actual stop on Mondays division those outrageous those who meet in Division and the City Council manage good as most impressive at a problem I would look to a gun first time in question because we had all that you should I think the second part that's actually a little bit more broad and we do something about that yes I think that this agenda through here is a lot of these questions we're alive it does come back to the same well what do you do about this problem you bring people together and agency together and have dialogue I'll say that what I believe distinguishes me is one of my skill sets that I believe I tweak to the table is relationship building communication this is something that I but as a social worker has time any news on and I think through those communications those through those relationship buildings through knowing how to work together I believe I have a very big chance and help me with something [Music] and I will tell you and I've also said that I hope to god God willing 20 years from now as an elected official they will still not call me an experienced pilot thicker mine is very very simple I've been meaning the Radian especially with people that that question you know coming up and trying to find where you were sitting away and play with the whole political mechanisms that go on and as accepted from the video everyone out there didn't know the politics out there that we don't money it's worth anything is worse than you think then let me be clear in terms of speaker to me it's about working with the grid people there you Clinique of the good people and working out with them together is not based on backchannels power and yes [Music] mayor the governor are in disagreement on the congestion pricing which would tax those in between the Manhattan and subsidize bridges and buses given the enormous travel to overpower Flatbush our communities and upstate what is your opinion of this proposal assuming both of suggestion bikes in addition the city least going announced a pilot program which would ban deliveries in select cities during rush hour which eventually be expanded to other neighborhoods people that are really more necessary evil we need to go out of our way in every time every time hospital way there is a suggestion of another attack another attack no no no what we able to do to lower taxes I'm not going to say I'm going excellence we have to fight again any new taxes as far as the the bidding deliveries so I I tried to be our maze playing the general I think that I think maybe because the nature of politics in general we become very cynical I am NOT attractive expert just to be clear I'm not running in this campaign ads in traffic exploit matter of fact I'm not really going in this campaign has any extra I like people as different people I want to understand that they think that this is rocket science but I applaud his plans I think that someone who's planning was actually stuff that we have done in our pocket self I think that there might be parts of this plan that we need to look at like when someone comes up with an idea unless it's so obvious from day one it makes no sense you say good luck when you're speaking of something let's see how it goes [Music] it's our name current term whatever but then like regressive punishes those who can't support it the most so if you're rich and you want to get suburban including setting up places where there can be floating a truck sermon about more importantly to try to get or at the end some of the burden on the community during the day don't want change we're gonna have a lightning round and I'll answer it to avoid that we'll start with mr. Tisch with all the questions winter vacation in the summer [Music] it's about 40 [Music] this [Music] and then conversation with the mostest he was dumb we disagree but I been needing input the Google in terms of how we deal with some of the town to exist without you there anything else that we are for our eligible for and his appealing one is that if we showing that we want to comply if the date if they see that and then we also show that we want to I have spoken to many officials so then not Blasio and his agency has been responsible that they are moving appear actually very needs to get as opposed to whether you're doing them on his policies from the liberal conservative point of view I want to believe that if we screw our job and we work together and we make our claims as to hey this is great that we found till here but it needs to be better [Music] stop working [Music] what you suggest the South of Market nightmare which is supported by the palm tree with fire hydrants very passable but them near bus stops and their corners available to make available more [Music] starting plan this week's program which is already endorsed by that we use in the area there are a lot of debt - accessories and they're just still there you have a little overactive - whether you'll be required within the market for the inactive we have a question for mr. Markowitz [Music] crime in the city is generally down but hate crimes are what country's steps we do we take you to deal with this pressing issue yeah so on that what this video said throughout I think the little bit before long City Council member is not able to say that oh they will they will accomplish that I think the idea is and again is the thing a city council member has to upon you are with the other City Council members and this is where speaker comes in this little mayor comes in this is where on a macro level you need to be able to be confident in your city council member will develop that working they needed so that as a force we could one city council member did we know we're not running for mayor we're not running for governor we're not running for president when I ran for Congress is saying city council members by yourself you need to just come together with other I think you got it already I said the question to any private the city is generally down for hate crimes that up what company stuff so do big things that deal with this pressing issue this segment first of all enforcement when somebody's quietly turning enforcing contactees against people what they have [Music] Oh taking down a track is not a important problem yeah I think how we mentioned the question crime is down but a problem is up I think that's a very interesting situation that I the book I think needs to be evaluated worldly people easily did say the Trump effect I think that's very simplistic deepening the bottom line is as I've mentioned a number of times to me it's about community engagement community and togetherness I have been so proud to spend so much of my time on the radio talking about the earthquake the devastating for Rico it took time to work and talk about the Muslim community the Chinese community about their issues I think it's going down when there is more togetherness I want to really point for us to show that we care about [Music] there are seven hours I can't wait this Sunday monitors I'm excited for most I don't get how City the progressive agenda seems to exclude the ultra-orthodox community so you know I am so excited to actually take advantage at least let it be good for the following things if your progressive and cultural sensitivity then we have what is this what is your stance on the child victims act which has penalties pain shooters what is your stance on the challenge [Music] I think that value to this question in a more respectful way we are running for City Council okay I am NOT going to mention that but I'll tell you why because I know it to be mature about this okay children souls have been destroyed okay and we need to first take a step back before we get it through oh we do support the market both certainly bankrupt English even nobody wants to do and of course we would all say that there should be nothing that will without really should enable some some some you don't have a situation where that would together this is very serious weather is the last question asked just now or whether it was about the question asks about the about taxes I'm sorry but the point is is that this is very serious know how character and this is serious I want to believe when you look at me you see someone that's going to give the seriousness of these issues what it desert that's going to work together with all of you to figure out how we could go about making either of the better and very complications this is our lives the direction of our park and memory will be decided in nine days okay and let's be honest over here everyone I've had to stay back from a lot of negative things that have been said about me we are talking about a situation is we're going to roll back and forth but we have to go back and forth he said she said he said she said okay we don't know the facts here who has a record record of Derek foot people and who he knew trust will really really be there to work and figure out what can be done to help people move on the content over here has all been similar are we not no respect so there's no half the content is basically allowed to say magician trip is about it's about being there
