Hello everyone. We've [music] reached
the next Hoff Torah. The prophecy of
Ovadia is short and powerful. The
prophet Ovadia speaks in the name of God
and tells of the judgment that will come
upon Edom. The nation descended from
Assad, Yakov's brother. [music] Despite
their family connection, the
treated the Jewish people with hatred,
arrogance, and betrayal. Therefore, God
sends [music] his prophecy through
Ovadia to announce the downfall of Edom
and the redemption of the Jewish people.
The prophecy opens with a declaration,
the vision of Ovadia. So says the Lord.
We heard from God that a messenger has
been sent among the nations to call for
war against Adon. God says, [music] "I
have made you small among the nations.
You are very despised." The
thought they were safe and strong and
that no one could harm them. They lived
in high protected places in strong
fortresses and said in their hearts,
"Who can bring us down to the ground?"
But the Lord answered them, "Even if you
raise yourselves up like an eagle, even
if you set your nest among the stars,
from there I will bring you down. It is
your pride that causes your downfall."
Oat describes how complete destruction
will come upon Adon. He says, "If
thieves came at night, they would only
take what they needed. And if grape
pickers came to harvest the grapes, they
would leave some grapes behind. But you
aton will be utterly destroyed.
Everything will be exposed. Even the
most hidden secrets, even the concealed
treasures. All your alliances will fall.
Even those who are at peace with you
will turn their backs on you. They will
betray you. They will set a trap for you
under the very bread you eat. No wisdom
will remain in you. No intelligence, no
counsel. God has declared, "On that day,
the wise men of Edom will perish and
understanding will vanish from Mount
Asav. The warriors of Edom, the men of
Tamman will collapse and every man from
Mount Asav will be cut off." And then
comes the reason because of the violence
against your brother Yakov. Edom stood
aside on the day of Israel's distress.
On the day when strangers came to
Jerusalem, plundered its possessions,
entered its [music] gates, and cast lots
over the city. And instead of helping,
Edom stood by, [music] happy to see the
destruction of his brothers. They not
only rejoiced, but also spoke harsh
words on the day of Yehuda's trouble. O
Vadia warns them, "Do not celebrate over
your brother's day. Do [music] not
rejoice over the day of their downfall.
Do not boast on the day of their
distress. Do not look upon their
misfortune, and do not lay your hand on
their possessions on the day of their
collapse. Do not stand at the crossroads
to capture the fugitives, and do not
deliver the survivors on the day of
distress. do not take advantage of his
weakness to harm him. The prophet
emphasizes that God does not [music]
forget, for the day of the Lord is near
for all nations. All the nations that
have done evil to Israel will receive
their recompense. As they have done, so
it will be done to them. The punishment
will come back upon their own heads.
They will drink from the cup of judgment
just as they drank in the past on God's
mountain. They will drink again, become
drunk, and disappear. They will be as if
they never existed. And then comes the
second part of the prophecy, the [music]
promise of redemption. On Mount Zion,
there will be deliverance and it will be
holy. There on Mount [music] Zion, there
will be salvation for the Jewish people.
The Jewish nation will inherit their
lands once again. The house of Yakov
will be a fire. [music] The house of
Ysef a flame, and the house of Asav will
be like straw. The fire [music] and the
flame will consume the straw, and not a
single survivor will remain from the
house of Assav. Oya describes how the
land of Israel [music] will return to
its people. The people of the south will
possess the mountains of Assad. The
people of the lands will possess the
land of the Philistines. The people
[music] of Ephraim will possess the
mountains of Samaria. And Benjamin will
possess Gilad. The exiles of Israel who
are in distant lands as far as France
and Spain will return and possess the
southern mountains. At the end of the
prophecy, there is a verse that sums
everything [music] up. Saviors will
ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountain
of Assav, and the Lord shall have the
kingdom. This is the climax of the
prophecy. After [music] all the
troubles, after all the pride of Edom
and all the betrayals, a day will come
when the Lord will reign over
everything.
The saviors who will [music] ascend
Mount Zion, the righteous, the leaders,
and the prophets will judge the mountain
of Assav and bring true [music] justice
to the world. In the end, everything
will become clear. Justice will prevail
and evil will disappear and the entire
world will recognize the sovereignty of
God. This is how the prophecy of Ovadia
ends. It is a prophecy small in words
but great in meaning. It teaches about
reward and punishment, about
responsibility among nations, about
loyalty, about justice and faith, that
in the end everything will be restored.
Edon falls and the Jewish people who
seemed humiliated and broken rise and
are exalted. And in the [music] end,
when everything is over, the final
promise will be fulfilled. And the Lord
will have the kingdom, not kings of
flesh and blood, not of pride and power,
but the true kingdom of God, a world of
faith, justice, and peace.
