Rabbi Boruch B. Bender, President of Achiezer addressing the crowd of over 2,000 people with opening remarks at a community wide Tehillim gathering in Yeshiva Sh'or Yoshuv. The event was a massive expression of Hakaros Hatov for the fact that there was no loss of life in the Far Rockaway, Five Towns community during Hurricane Sandy. Several Rabbonim of the community led the recital of Tehillim. The event took place on October 27th, 2013 one year after Hurricane Sandy.

precious
oh there are abundance there with us
today
and precious my parents
before I begin my brief remarks today
I would like to perhaps offer its Fila
all of the tefilas and all the special
to heal him that will be said today
for two very special people who are both
individually going through very
difficult times
Israel
it is so hard to believe
that merely one year ago
this very beautiful room that we are
sitting in today
like I said it's really hard to believe
that this room where we were a year ago
and where we are today
it began
with an innocent phone call
asking the shayas of leadership to
perhaps loan some space to our community
so that we can host some basic relief
operations if you will
within hours
this special my son became a welcome
Haven to thousands from across our
community
seeking a warm meal a caring person to
speak with
Sheamus or collected laundry was washed
cleanup volunteers were organized and
where we sit today nearly 100 racks of
brand new clothing were set up and in a
dignified way were distributed to many
of our families whose basic possessions
had been taken by Hurricane Sandy
please they deserve it
today is our Collective broker that in
the Merit of the legendary that took
place within these wolves the Yeshiva
will continue to prosper and grow and
always be a welcome place for anyone in
our community to be able to turn to
thank you Yeshiva yasu
our community needed so much help to get
where we are today and it really was the
collective of help and work together of
so many organizations including our
local haverhad Salah our local showroom
here
the Jewish Community Council of the
Rockaway peninsula
they all deserve the Applause
Chabad of the five towns
Congregation Beth Solomon
the Young Israel of Wavecrest Bayswater
the kahila of Inward and Yeshiva Katana
of Long Island
the nivnet organization
kojo of Flatbush
as well the JCC of Five Towns thank you
all so much for what you have done for
all of us
thank you
why are we all here today
I will tell you exactly
approximately two months ago
several women from our community they
specifically did not want their names
mentioned
approached us with an idea
these women had each spoken to their
individual rub on him and wanted to find
a way that we as one whole Community can
gather together in an uplifting yet
appropriate way to thank baraku for the
incredible kindness which he has
bestowed upon all of us
first and foremost we cannot and will
not ever forget the devastating physical
and financial damages that our community
faced and that many continue to face
until this very day
we all know of the emotional impact that
continues to play a role as well
however
it was only through open and incredible
Nissan
that somehow someway our community was
thankfully and miraculously spared any
loss of life
I would like to share just one memory
one recollection that personally will be
seared in our minds forever
it was just hours after the storm had
begun
and it was quite apparent that this was
not just another hurricane Irene
our community would truly be put to the
test
that first evening several Community
activists and directors of different
organizations were gathered together
huddled together and tried to figure out
the best possible plan of action if
there was a plan of action
our dedicated assemblyman Mr Phil
goldfeder who's been serious Navistar
Community will never be forgotten
he sat down with us to try and take
stock of the situation
we will never forget
he looked at us
we looked at him
and the question was not just if
we were facing an epic tragedy
it was simply a question of we're and
how
and we were all overcome with fear and
trepidation
however the rebellious
it was incredibly no loss of life within
our community
we are of course sensitive to people
from other neighborhoods that were sadly
not as lucky
yes at the peak of the storm there were
some difficult moments but with the help
of more than 100 of the most dedicated
hot solid members Solomon members and
dozens of volunteers so many people were
miraculously saved that night
is the singular and only reason why
we're all here today
to profoundly and collectively say thank
you or katisbaruthu thank you for
protecting us thank you for literally
keeping us alive and thank you for
giving all in our community the koyah
the spirit and the artists which we all
needed to rebuild during this most
difficult year
this program has been designed to be
uplifting for both children and adults

community in leading Us in the
incredible completion of safer to

youngster followed by the keynote
address from our official chapter and at
the conclusion those three capillas will
be said line by line to be followed by
some uplifting music from Ethan Katz and
borrow Flavin we must publicly ask in
the Phila from the incredibly over 55
rabban who have joined us today because
each one truly deserves to recover on
their own to be up here for the time

we promised to move the program and we
will before I introduce our guest
speaker Terry softer
we would be privileged to hear some
brief remarks I spoke about in the
series Memphis earlier from our local
assemblement eurothem Phil goldfinter
the rabbiness doesn't give us
that our community or our families can
overcome
and there is no question that the
standards that were placed before us a
year ago
are unmatched like many of us have ever
seen and Barbara Shenley came through at
the other end
we're still suffering there's still work
to be done but we all came together we
showed the world an Optus that no other
community saw
and areas all throughout queens and all
across this city they learn from us how
to work together and how to build
programs that work
and I'm just so proud that every day I
go out and I try to do the best I can to
make a kids jam and it's going to be
very very very hard to top the amazing
Hashem that was made in this community
as the entire world was watching
when the mayor said to me how do we do
this program how do we do that program I
said take a look at Far Rockaway have
come together they've set up programs
they've learned how neighbors helping
neighbors families helping families
friends helping friends is the only way
to survive we taught the world a great
lesson we have a long way to come we're
going to do it together thank you
thank you Phil I was promised short and
sweet
