Cantorial Concert in Jerusalem - 1983 Chief Cantors Naftali Hershtik & Moshe Stern A historic live recording from Jerusalem, 1983. Two of the greatest cantors of the 20th century, Naftali Hershtik and Moshe Stern, share the stage in an unforgettable evening of chazzanut and Jewish liturgical music. Cantor Naftali Hershtik served as Chief Cantor of the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem and was renowned for his elegance and majestic style. Naftali Herstik (born 1947) is a well known chazzan (cantor) and teacher. He was born in Salgótarján, Hungary and came with his family to Israel at the age of three. He is descended from a long line of cantors and Rabbis, and was recognized as a cantorial prodigy from his early childhood, singing as a teen in concerts with Cantor Moshe Koussevitzky. Cantor Moshe Stern was celebrated worldwide for his amazing fiery davening's full of warmth and neshama. Born in Budapest and immigrated to Israel in 1950. In 1955 he was appointed cḥazzan to the chief synagogue in Reḥovot, and in 1958 to the hechal shlomo Synagogue in Jerusalem. From 1963 to 1968 he was chief cantor of the Great Synagogue in Johannesburg, and from 1968 to 1977 of Beth-El Synagogue in Boro Park, New York. In 1977 he returned to Israel. Stern was regarded as one of the greatest cantors of our time and constantly toured the Jewish world to give concerts of Jewish liturgical music.
