fire safety in the community is
absolutely so important throughout the
year we're always having candles in our
home every shabbat we have hanukkah we
have to stress to our children that fire
is dangerous it's very important firstly
to make sure that all homes are equipped
with both carbon monoxide detectors and
with smoke detectors it could be in the
middle of night we know carbon monoxide
is that silent killer you can't smell it
you have to have detectors you should
have them checked every year to make
sure that they're up to date and that
they're working it was a friday night
and we were
everyone was sleeping in the house
and all of a sudden the
the carbon monoxide detector went off
luckily the my system was set up was
connected to the fire station the police
department the fire department showed up
with their axes all in their hands ready
to break down the walls whatever they
need to do
they unplugged everything they the
numbers were still
not didn't make sense so then one of the
five five five men had an idea maybe
it's the next door neighbor
so he went and he banged on the door for
five ten minutes to wake up the neighbor
who was sleeping in the back of the
house finally we woke them up
and the firemen just opened their door
and the numbers the numbers on the
carbon monoxide reader they were sky
high they were way over the the the
limit and
and
we woke up the they woke up all the kids
they got all the kids out of the house
but
because if we just smoke detected this
carbon monoxide attack that didn't
sound in my house
has shown something total catastrophic
what happened to them
smoke alarms really really save lives
make sure you check your batteries once
a year make sure that the smoke alarms
are working properly make sure that if
you have them connected to a central
station monitoring so that they could
call the fire department right away
that's extremely important
we've taken
sometimes families of six seven eight
people out of a home into the hospital
only because there was a carbon monoxide
leak and there was no carbon monoxide
detector in the home it's very important
to educate your children on fire and to
let them know that they should not be
playing with fire or matches or lighters
they shouldn't be turning on the stove
they're under a certain age it comes to
hanukkah after a half hour if you're
leaving the house you are allowed and
you should put the candles out other
fires that we've seen or heard of happen
a lot in the summertime whether it be
during a barbecue or just hanging around
a fire pit it's very important to know
that you cannot throw lighter fluid the
fire can catch and come back at you and
literally blow up in your face i make
sure that especially in kitchens um you
know but various strategic places
throughout the house you have to have a
fire extinguisher i have to know how to
use the fire extinguisher and your
family members have to know where it is
there's lots of people who bought one
you know when they bought their house
and sitting in some cabinet somewhere
behind lots of other items you don't
know where it is it's not going to help
you it's obviously very important to do
some level of fire drills as you know
schools do it businesses do it
um just giving kids at a young age of
three four and five the basic tools
skills of what to do and how to do it in
case josh's home there's a fire in a
case that your smoke detectors go off
and you're fearful of a fire call 9-1-1
first they're the first ones that are
going to be able to get inside the house
then call hatzala people have
third floors addicts
there's no way out god forbid is a fire
they make
rope ladders
have one and teach your children who are
sleeping up there if god forbid they
have to you hook it out the window and
it takes you straight downstairs to
safety
