Apparently, I slipped on a hand grenade
that was lying there in the mud without
the safety already. It was waiting there
for 8 months and I slipped on it and
my back hit the floor and I heard
boom. Immediately, I [music] was blown
to the air, landed on my stomach. My
legs weren't responding, so I figured I
need to stay alive. I was very focused
and I'm crawling with my last breath and
I dropped my head on the gravel and I
started yelling, "I was wounded. I'm
here." I hear the platoon commander
going on the radio and saying, "There's
one wounded. He's asking for evac. It's
the rabbi." That's how everyone knew me
there. "And two legs amputated." When I
heard that, I instantly understood I
have a new mission in life. Everything's
going to change and I have to survive to
fulfill this mission.
