everyone
thanks for coming out tonight I want to
thank our dear friends and hosts for
hello melts for uh making this weekend
possible uh won't be my very our hosts
should continue in his special avoida
he helps out many things in the
community and Beyond and needs to be
able to continue in good health in his
humble way I'll be asked I also want to
thank Alicia also who's very
instrumental in making tonight's event
possible
so the the objective of the malava malka
I understand is uh we have a lot of here
they're in 12th grade and it's a very uh
important year of transition where
they're now I'm from America so I don't
know exactly the different madrigos but
basically you're going from one madrega
from high school to uh the next level
some type of basement and the topic on
everyone's mind in America we say the
elephant in the room is you know where
are we going next year
so I I'm not familiar with the Israeli
scene and the various yeshivas but maybe
we'll speak about some of the factors to
bear in mind when making this very
important decision
um there's the first thing I want to
share with you is just a simple plastic
and Hamish
at the end of passion
so yakovinu was just chased after by his
father-in-law it could happen his father
was chasing after him
and the following wanted to kill him you
know nice no and uh I I have a wonderful
father
what where's your family
he didn't tell me to speak about this
and
his daughter as a hug and a kiss and he
kisses his grandchildren and yaakov is
off Off to the Races the public says
and he encounters the Angels so now she
says what are these angels well she says
these were special angels because yaakov
is now leaving
he's uh he's coming to Earth Israel we
know there are two types of malachim
they're
Malachi Israel and when you're in you
have you know American Angels so the
Anaheim Angels they call them the angel
you know the just joking okay you have
the you have uh angels and the narrative
soil you have errats Israel Deke Angels
right and jacobino is transitioning from
Israel so the angels of Earth Israel the
Angels leave and the angels of Earth
Israel come that's what Rashi says comes
the marao maral asks a simple question
yaakov is nowhere near eres Israel he's
not even close to Earth Israel he still
is about to fight with the Malachi in
the beginning of Islam
fights him when he crosses
to go through Amon and moyoff he's a few
hundred miles away from Earth Israel why
are the Angels of Earth's Israel coming
now that's tomorrow's kashan rash in the
gorarie says the gorarie
in Yiddish kite we don't care about
where you are
we only care about one thing where are
you going where are you headed
until now was in and he just changed
directions headed toward
Israel and the moment you turn your head
and head toward that's where you are
you are not where you are you are where
you're going
that's an important thing always to bear
in mind that the Devonshire looks at us
what are our plans what are our goals
what our aspirations the moment Jacob
headed towards Israel he's already
considered as if he's an artist Israel
it's interesting you know in halacha the
moment that Dawn cracks and it's pitch
black outside it's called and it's day
and you could be mikaim all Mitzvah so
at least
and the moment the sun drops
even though it's bright outside it's
night already and the mission Bruce says
you can't even start minha if you're
going to be finishing after the skia
isn't it interesting that it's pitch
black outside and it's halachly day
or it's light outside and it's halachly
night and the answer is we don't care
what something is we care about where
it's headed
the moment Dawn cracks it's headed
toward light even though it's dark it's
day
the moment the sun begins to fall even
though it's light it's nighttime that's
the way we look at things
so that's something important to bear in
mind whatever wherever we are now
the first thing we have to establish is
where are we headed where do we want to
go what are our goals sometimes you want
to choose a school
you have to be ready for it
it has to be
something appropriate for you but it
doesn't have to be where you are today
it has to be something that's
appropriate for what your goals are I
want to share with you a few ideas
about learning in general and you know
I'm not such an old guy but I I was an
issue I spent many years in Yeshiva
Yeshiva
about 30 years
the time I was a young bucker until
maybe a few months ago I spent most the
first part of first aid and second seder
and Yeshiva and preparing Shira and I'll
tell you a little secret
who is successful in Yeshiva
you know when you're young you think
who's going to be successful it's going
to be the smartest kid in the class
that's what we naturally think
and it's for sure not always or even
usually the case
the people who are the most successful
in Yeshiva have a number of intangible
ingredients
doesn't mean they're the smartest often
not
and it's these intangible ingredients
that give them
doesn't mean you're going to become a
rashiva or you can become a big Rob
means that learning and and uh
and rookness is a very important part of
your life whatever you choose to do
Yeshiva means that whatever you gain in
the Yeshiva and the learning you do in
Yeshiva becomes meaningful to you so
that the rest of your life learning is
something that's a very important part
of your life so I'll share with you a
few ingredients
that help a person be successful in
learning and when you hear about it you
say whoa learning is very different than
anything else learning is different than
I know a massive that they have secular
subjects also right what are you doing
you have science
you have science you have math
learning is different than science
learning is different in math you know
who the best in the in the class in math
will be
without exception the smartest kid
whoever's the smartest will be the best
in math whoever's the smartest will be
the best in science but it is not true
and it will never be true that the ones
who are most successful in learning will
be the smartest
so I'll give you a few ingredients
I'm going to say over a mission Perkins
everybody knows the mishnah and we're
going to ask a simple question
from
Cena that makes no sense there is a man
named Sinai and he grew arms and he
handed Moshe the Torah Moshe kibal Torah
from Sinai he didn't accept her from
Cena except the Torah foreign
so there's a Texas
the letter mem could sometimes be
causative mem could mean because of
accepted
because of harcina because of something
he learned from her Sinai because of a
lesson that he learned from harsinai
what lesson did Moshe have been learn
from arsinai the lesson of humility
it was the most humble of all the
mountains
the camera says in tightness why is
Torah compared to water because water
always goes to the lowest point
so too Tyra always goes to the most
humble
say what what does Tara have to do with
humility
well the most humble person in the class
be the best in math it has no
correlation there's no correlation
between humility and learning
mathematics there's no correlation
between humility and science
but in the long run those who are humble
will be successful in learning why
because someone who's about Guyver
oh good morning says this yeah yeah I
got it I got it I don't need to ask my
rubby I don't need to ask my khabrusa my
Ruby said something yeah I think I
understand it yeah yeah a guy like me I
understand it
somebody who is yeah yeah I'll remember
this I'll remember this I'll remember
this
and those people are not successful
because they don't have the humility to
go over to the Webby and say you know
what Robbie I didn't really understand
what you said could you could you
explain it again
you know what I didn't really understand
what the you could hear or share and you
can miss the point
and if you have geitha you're not going
to go over to harus and say no I didn't
really understand what the rebbe said
could you explain it to me I missed
something
or if you're a bad guy if you're gonna
say I already Hazard it twice
I'll probably remember it humility is
the key ingredient to being successful
in learning
arrives that to learn Torah
you have to be receptacle
now the thicker the clear is the less
space of receptivity the Klee has
so less of an ego you have the less of a
bald Guyver you are the more room there
is in you to fill yourself up with Tyra
this is very important to bear in mind
you know somebody is is preparing for a
newsman
and they think about all the things they
need to do
one important thing to do is to work on
humility sometimes you hear a share and
you're you don't want to go over to the
web you don't want to admit you didn't
understand you want you don't want to
ask someone else in the class you don't
want to admit you didn't understand you
don't want to review it again you don't
want to admit humility is a very
important ingredient in learning and
what we're learning is the ingredients
of being successful in Tyra
are Supernatural
they're not intuitive
because learning is not mathematics for
learning you need one thing which is the
most important ingredient and that is
and there's certain ways of accessing
and one of them is humility
I'll give you another important idea
ready for this
we live in the in um
the age where there's a lot of learning
you go to the show Friday night I was
amazed in America you don't have this
last night went to the shul there are I
don't know 100 people learning or
something Friday night something like
that a lot of people learning and
there's that fioni everybody's learning
everyone's learning and everyone's
Hashem there's a big tire out there and
a lot of people are learning it
but it says
you have to make for yourself a rubby
now why do you have to make yourself for
rubby what do you need a rubbie for
there's art school gamoras
yeah in America the art scroll in Israel
what is called mahadurat schatenstein
what are they called
you don't need a red B you could just uh
take out there's a sifta gamaras and you
could just read anything even every
single toast you know our school came
out now with art scrot Isis
so you could get every penny Joshua
martial in English
so listen to this my experience is
that people who only learn on them by
themselves and in the end don't really
have a Revy to connect with
the learning is not as deeply ingrained
in their blood you see it's not enough
for the tar to be in your head
math it only has to be in your head
science it only has to be in your head
but the Torah has to be more than in
your head it has to be in your heart
so how do you get the Torah in your
heart
it's not enough to read Maduras
schatenstein as much as I love Arts girl
I love art school is a best publishing
company in the world
but you have to have a rabbi
why Rabino writes a person will remember
something that he learned from Arabi
more than if he learned it himself
and I think part of that means it will
go into your heart more when you learn
from Arabi than if you learn yourself
say why is that true because we're not
robots
we're human beings
and human beings are affected by other
human beings they're not affected by
black and white you could read black and
white and it will go into your mind and
of course it will influence you but when
you learn from a remedy that you respect
it enters you on a deeper level
so this is a very important thing to
think about when you're going to Yeshiva
should I go to that big Yeshiva that
after four and a half years I'll speak
to the rebbies gabai and Jose come back
to the rebbe and ask him a question in a
year and a half and then the rebbe will
say yes come back in three years you
can't go there sorry
you need to have a place that you have
someone that you're comfortable with
learning from they have relationship
with
it's a very important factor to
ultimately in the long term be
successful in learning that learning is
important to you you have to have
somebody who that you could respect that
you're comfortable with now everybody
has a different way of having a
relationship with some people you know
they tag along wherever the revenue goes
and some people you know that's not
their thing but you have to have a human
being who you feel that you could grow
from and that ties into humility also
some people say I don't need a Revy you
know just give me the the gemara and
tell me this year and I'll figure out
everything on my own
but I see look arrive it now in
mathematics you don't need the revi he
tells you the formula you master it and
you're on your own why do I need to have
a relationship with my mentor my
professor my teacher and the answer is
Torah is not mathematics Torah is
different it's not enough to go into
your mind it has to enter your blood it
has to enter your heart
okay here are some other ideas
the gemara says in Arabic
yeah hello so you're going to speak
about mayor I wasn't planning on it
right but we'll get it we'll get a
little we won't speak around May we're
talking about bro yeah
remember yeah mayor's wife
and Maria
saw a certain student it's a good
morning
and the student was learning he was
sitting there
and he was learning
and burrio went over to him and she
kicked him
she said you showed us she didn't use
that word
she said it says
that when you enunciate the words of
Torah then you'll remember and if you
don't say the words you don't remember
that's interesting she used
when you learn Tara with all of your
avarim then it will be preserved now
what does it mean learned with all your
ivaram how do you learn title with your
fingers or your toes so the Marshall
explains that when you say the words of
Torah it creates vibrations
and literally your whole body vibrates
So when you say the words you know the
vibrations are shaking your whole body
it will stick within you longer in fact
anyone who says the words of tar while
you're learning you'll remember it
if you just read it silently you will
forget it quickly I'm going to tell you
if you're sitting in front of a gemara
and you just think the words
you now became the midst of tomato
that's a Whopper
now if somebody argues or shamizaman
says no you can't say that if you just
think the words
that if you so they asked the question
is so when I go to Ashira I'm not doing
anything so when you go to Ashira your
makayaim saying the words through
the same way when you hear kidush it
says if you said it when you hear a
sheer it's as if you said it
but according to that as much as I love
torahanytime.com
you would not be able to do
on a recorded shear
because you can't be able to take on a
recorded chair
butman says no if someone was almond
says you're not absolutely required to
say the words of Tara to Mika in the
midst of tamatara
it's just that
the way to the the format of Torah is
such that because the question is when
you're learning with the kabrusa
so you have to you can't both be saying
the words the most annoying thing in the
world is you know when people hear this
and then you're learning with them and
then I'm saying it and then quiet I'm
saying not you you know and the guy
wants to say it along with you so so the
Quran says
you don't have to come on it's that
Hashem gave the midst of tamatera that
sometimes one person says and sometimes
another person says it okay now think
about the following do you think if
you're learning math it would matter if
you say one plus one equals two two
times two equals four four divided by
two you think it makes an afghanina if
you say the words you don't say the
words you understand that you don't
understand that why should saying the
words have an effect on your level of
understanding but as we mentioned
tamatara is different than all other
disciplines
tamatara requires now what we're
learning is also
that in order for Torah to be absorbed
in your bloodstream you want to involve
as many modals as many parts of your
physiology as possible you want to say
the words you want to hear it from Arabi
I'll tell you another ingredient here's
another ingredient
or no he's done that in Israel yeah so
then you know the bathroom
[Music]
yeah
how is it going how does it go the name
he knows he knows yeah right the guy
with the scarf you know right
no who knows
you know the yeah I see I could
tell Ashley Khan
says fortunate is someone who comes to
the next world
with his learning in his hand
says what does it mean fortunate as
someone who comes to the world next
world with his learning in his hand the
Masha says this refers to someone who
writes down what he learns
I remember looking back at and being in
high school
in three out of my four years I took
notes on the shiram
and one year I I didn't take notes and
the reason is that the the share wasn't
as organized as a as the other shiram
but I for sure
had a much deeper understanding of the
learning the years I took notes it
didn't even compare the years I took
notes did not compare in any way to the
years I didn't take notes that's what
the government is actually me shabala
Khan the tamudoy biada when you write
down you're learning it affects you on a
much much deeper level it penetrates the
heart on a deeper level
so these are all things these are all
techniques these are all tricks to get
the learning from your head into your
heart you want to listen from a rebbe
you want to say the words
you want to write it down these are all
Supernatural ways of getting the Torah
into your heart
I'll tell you another important uh
idea
you don't think more about them
had a dispute
with one of the amaran
with
like this
if the Torah would ever be forgotten I
would restore the Torah through my pill
and repria said no no no no
I would make sure the toe would never be
forgotten
what I would do is I would take five
boys five young men and then another six
young men I would teach each one of the
boys
I'll teach each one of the boys one of
the mishna and then I would have them
teach it to each other
and this way the hamisha kamshita would
never be forgotten and the shishu city
mishnah would never be forgotten
that's the gemara and the gemara says
about
asks
why did rupriya teach each one of the
five boys
and each one of the six boys
he should have just taught all 11 kids
all you know the five books of the Torah
and the Surah and call it a day why was
it so important that he give each one
one and they teach it to somebody else
so that shall explains this balance
but Cleo wanted to make sure each one of
these boys reached the highest madrega
of Torah the highest madrigo of Torah is
not Lil moyed it's not to learn only
it's Lil moyed
if you not only learn but if you teach
to other people your level of
understanding of what you learned will
be infinitely higher and more deep
in fact you ever wonder the gemara says
foreign
there's no comparison between 100 you
ever wonder how in the world am I
supposed to learn something 101 times
is that possible
somebody was so somebody once came to
the stapler
so many ones came to the stipler and he
said uh yeah I'm not sure I'm sitting in
kailal but I have opportunity to give
shirim should I take off time from
learning to prepare a sheer and the
stapler says of course you should do you
understand that if you're able to
clarify something and give it over to
somebody else
it's the equivalent of learning it 50
times
so then it comes out you if you do that
twice you already got up to 100.
you want to really know your learning be
clear about your learning
find someone in the sheer that needs a
little help
make sure you have it down now if you're
going to be listening from the rebbe and
you took notes and you said the words
chances are you know it pretty well
say it over to that guy
that will be the equivalent of 50 times
and if you don't have anyone to say to
call up your brother call up your sister
call up your mother even she doesn't
know what you're talking about
say it over you say over learning that's
the highest madrego of tamatara Lil
moyed you know what is
go over and tell your friend he's not
interested in hearing too bad hold him
hostage say it over to him you just put
it in your backpack you got 50 times
tell your call up your grandfather your
grandmother your great aunt your great
aunt bothers you enough you bother her
tell her over you want to hear over
malarama
you know say over the whole thing say
over the whole thing
if you could say over something to
somebody else
say come on I don't even understand it
well enough that's because you have to
hear it from the rebbe and you take
notes and you listen and you say the
words all of these things are going to
help you understand that on a very deep
level
and then here's the most important
ingredient you ready for this
here's a guy
he doesn't understand his math
so he takes out the hill him
and he starts davening
is he going to understand the math
better
if you ask most professors in University
if saying to Hill him
will have help you understand
mathematics better it's doubtful that
they would say it has a major statistics
do not show correlation between Fila
necessarily and a deeper understanding
of mathematics but the Camaro says in
brachice
it says like this is
pray for this pray for this means I
remember when I was a bachar
I once uh asked Victor Miller you know
why do we dive in foreign
you don't get anything if you don't
Davin anything you want you don't get
unless
you spell you need to pray for this more
than anything else the gemara brings an
opinion what's Zeus Tyra
that the most important ingredient to
being successful in learning is davening
it is a person's responsibility to Daven
for themselves that they should be
successful in Tyra
how often
all day
whenever you when you're walking down
the street on your way home on the way
to Yeshiva on the bus in the car always
you always have to Diamond for that
doesn't there's no specific formula you
know it's interesting just speak out you
know the mission says
that if you look in in the first page
almost every gamer you have that Fila of
an account sign
foreign
should you say that
the rambam in the parishram says one is
to say that
but if you look around I don't I don't
know you know that it's so in America
you don't see most
yes
before they learn they say that's Fila
so there's a number of interesting
justifications why do we don't say that
Villa
is that we shouldn't make a mistake in
paskening
and the field is that is said when you
enter the base ham address so the says
like this
most poison learn at home so they're not
entering the base matters
are not paskaning so therefore everyone
is absolved from this film
it's not obligatory
in the footnotes in the end of
Israel he says that when we say in the
morning I have a rabba that's like the
TV of before and when we say
that's like the Fila of maidim at the
end
but still the khazrainish recommended
saying it and I'm not here to tell you
you should say it you shouldn't say it
you'll ask yorubby
but one thing the gemara does say is
that a person has to invest great
efforts in davening for their success in
limanatara so what I don't understand
toy Swiss I'm not smart enough you know
this is not for me
I'll come to something in a minute
no maybe you're not understanding you
need to dive in more you need to dive
more intensely a person's success in
learning Tyra is very much dependent on
how much uh Felix they invest in their
learning
so you think about it now so learning is
dependent on humility it's dependent on
having a rebbe it's dependent on if we
write if we say the words antifila these
are all intangible Supernatural
ingredients then when it comes to any
other discipline one would think that
these things have no relevance at all
And yet when it comes to tamatera these
things are very important can I say one
more thing and then we'll let them okay
okay
here's the thing I'll tell you personal
experience
you're learning a gamara you're learning
a tysus
and because you have no idea what it's
talking about and you say forget it uh
you know that's it I'm throwing in the
towel this learning thing is not for me
so I tell you a little secret this I
learned a while ago
you know why you don't know what it's
you know you know you know you don't
know it's flying
because you only learned it one time
you will never unless you're like a a
genius
you won't understand it the first time
see how many times do I need to learn it
the stipler writes based on the guitar
and Arabian that when they bunch of them
give the turret to my shopping
Hashem
I'm almost done Hi how are you two
minutes I'm almost done when Hashem gave
the turretsinai
I want to welcome my uncle Dr Sherman
Glick this guy from bears
discusses and Mark says
what is the arrangement the format of
learning
Moshe then calls in arunakayan and
moisture teaches
most of them teaches the Torah to Allah
and isama they come in and think about
discusses where exactly did Allah sit
did one sit on the right did one sit on
the left
then the gemara says there's a canaanim
came in
then says the rest of Claus Israel came
in so think about it for a moment at
this point in time Aaron heard it from
Maisha Aaron heard it again from Maisha
when my to Aaron and the benihara Aaron
heard it a third time when moshot and
Allah and there's a kanim
and then our own has to teach it to his
two sons and to the zucchinim and the
rest of Israel and the gemara says every
member of the Jewish people ended up
learning it four times
Aaron learned it four times Allah
learned it four times
the cicada went to four times and the
rest of college so I learned it four
times says from here we conclude
that when one learns something one has
to learn it four times
so the stipler writes in one of hisaram
this has nothing to do with Hazara we're
not up to hazar yet you're not up to
Hazara until you've actually learned it
Beyond four times the first four times
is still considered learning you know it
took me years sometimes you learn a
tysis or you learn a Taz or a shock you
say I don't know what's going on I don't
know what he's talking about
it's because you only learned it once
you'll see you come back and read it a
second time it's a completely different
world and if there once you read
something four times you've just learned
it
they give up very quickly they think you
know I understand other subjects right
away so if I don't understand Kamara
right away or twice this right away it's
because I'm not cut out for it I'm not
suited for this for this discipline it's
not true the the format of learning is
different than other disciplines the
gemara says learning requires siata the
shmaya and the ingredients necessary to
be successful
are very different than the ingredients
necessary to be successful in other
disciplines so we spoke about a number
of the ingredients uh learning Tyra
number one we spoke about humility
Asana writes the more humble somebody is
the more of a receptacle they become to
be a Klee for tamatara we spoke about
writing writing is a way of deepening a
person's appreciation understanding of
learning we spoke about the importance
of saying the words and Martin Irvin
says
by saying the words the Torah penetrates
deeper the importance of assail arrive
when somebody learns from a revi the
Torah is more impactful these are all
things that when it comes to other
disciplines
may or may not be crucial ingredients
but when it comes to tamatara tamatara
is what we call La Mala mise
and therefore the ingredients needed to
be successful
are very different than ingredients need
to be successful in other disciplines so
in this very important year of
transition
to make the right decision in your
Yeshiva choice for the next year and
look forward to hearing good news with
from everyone thank you so much you've
just experienced another Torah class
brought to you like torahanytime.com
