hi fighters this is your house okay
okay so uh we are here we are right now
in a refugee camp in uh kurdistan
near the village of hassan shams and we
are here meeting the
senior director of the camp who has
welcomed us very warmly
mr uh rasheed he is the senior
camp manager of different camps in
kurdistan region
he managed six camps in kyrgyzstan it is
all the camps there are idps
not refugees the idp is from other parts
of iraq right
they are here he's saying there are two
types of camps in kurdistan refugee
camps is usually for people
outside of iraq and idp camps for
people displaced people yeah this place
people i'm i'm
i'm managing the the idp camps
it has been built in 2016 it was 10
camps before and now
six camps left
i'm managing those camps right and uh
how many people
how many people are are currently in
these camps
foreign
there are 38 000 people
uh this camp is like 7 000 people
living well and and the people who were
in this camp
are where are they from and uh what are
they just refugees are they former isis
members
who are they the campaign
[Music]
so you're saying this camps is like uh
for sunni arabs in mosul and you may
never play
they are mostly sunnis and like
completely sunni people before used to
be like other
uh minorities also but now only sunni
people
left we have isis families in this camps
and even
isis in this camp living in these camps
are they uh currently active members of
isis or just
just former isis members they are uh
they have been caught by peshmerga like
few years ago
they were like teenagers they joined
isis and they
isis trained them and then the peshmerga
captured them
and they put them in prison and then
they made their trials
and they have been in prison for like
different cases two three years and now
the
peshmerga released them they come to
this camp because
they have no other place to go if they
go to their places like mosul or kirkuk
or any other
places the the iraqi army
or and hajj shabby is controlling these
areas
they will capture them and put them
again in prison prison
because they don't believe on
kurdistan region government they say
they will say to them you have been in
trials in kurdistan region krg
we have to do our trials as well so they
will be in prison twice
right and and can we meet some of these
these people and the
families and maybe some former isis
members
yes thank you very much thank you very
much
thank you thank you i hope you have a
lot of success
[Music]
okay so we've just just left the office
of the senior director
we're gonna go meet uh the inhabitants
of the camp
i uh what can i tell you this is gonna
be an interesting day
let's ask them what the what the why
they are in line what they want
okay
so they are they are waiting for to get
a card
from un which they paid each family two
hundred dollars
they paid families and now 600 families
left to get that that car that so
basically what's happening right now is
the people that are standing here
waiting to get a it's like a credit card
it's like yeah and they can
have spending money to to get whatever
they need this money comes from the u.n
a lot of people from many different
backgrounds
um i wish i could talk to some of them
do you speak english english no no
english
arabic
i don't speak arabic north chicago
anyone speak english
does anybody speak english here no
english
oh you speak english nice to meet you
nice to meet you what's your name my
name is paris
and where are you from from iraq yeah
okay how long have you been living here
how long are you living here
this is a problem problem oh okay
sorry thank you nice to meet you
hello hello
good morning
love you too
sit down in my house you want you can
come to your house
where is your house i would come
absolutely we would love to come
yes can we go let's go this way father's
just invited us into his house we're
gonna go
yes let's do it come on we're coming
where's your house how far is it
is walking alongside the car and he
wants to take us to his house now
thank you any time
these people have approached the vehicle
and they said that
they don't have uh gas for the
generators and there's no power
uh right now in their homes and uh it's
a tough situation
what's your name so this boy has just uh
attached himself to the vehicle and he's
riding along
uh you know you always have to be
creative when you're finding a way to
keep busy
in the refugee camp kid probably does
not have a lot of toys
[Music]
we all think that we're um
so we are now in the residential part of
the camp and this is where this is where
people live
so hello hi fathers this is your house
okay
[Music]
um
yes of course we're gonna sit down so
this is uh
this is the home
there's a little tv a mirror
some clothing and blankets
two mattresses and this is this is how
they live
and even though he has nothing he wants
to invite us into his home
very very touching
this is a kitchen
okay
so what's what's this room adele aloha
and this is the living room we we sit
here
so we were here and this is a small
refrigerator
some clothing a little uh cute little
plush dog over here okay
and is there something outside oh yeah
what what's this
wow there's snow oh there
and this is back here this is the
backyard yeah
okay there's a little swing i see yeah
okay
[Music]
he's married he he got a daughter
one year old wow so is he how old is he
20 20. well and uh
so i want to ask you well like what does
he what does he do what do you do
uh during the day so even now
are they allowed to leave the camp
um
or other places where militia control it
because
they will make their problem right
sympathizer he doesn't admit it but
maybe he's an
isis sympathizer or one of his cousin or
family member was isis
so if he go back they will make him
problems
see i'm looking at him now he looks he
looks like a very nice person he invited
us in
um you know i would hate to find out
that he
that he might have been uh isis
sympathizer but
is there this uh is there any concept of
like repentance of people who
you know they've been part of isis in
the past and now they want to change
their lives and
and become better people and
you know functioning members of society
um that's
the job some ngo does here uh
like they have activities to you know
rehabilitation
yeah inside the camp uh
they have that but like not all the camp
are isis families
right of course of course and so and do
you want to ask him where he was during
the war if he was part of and
you went to
isis
in 2017 they got liberated
right and was he was he does he say if
he was part of daesh or not
too much
one of his family members was with isis
right
and so where where is that family number
uh where's the family member now
he died i'm sorry i'm sorry and uh
it must be it must be very
very difficult to to be in this part of
the world especially during this time
and
we i hope i hope things will get better
for you and
then
please take care of yourself and get
something nice
be well okay one day things are going to
get better
anytime thank you for thank you for
inviting us
likewise thank you hi fathers
we're so nice to meet you nice to meet
you okay
be well god bless you
see you later thank you thank you for
inviting us into your home
uh
there you go there you go take it enjoy
enjoy oh
