“On October 7th I decided to Start Keeping Shabbat”

On October 6th, we traveled to near Oz and I remember the way we got on the bus. I sat and turned my head toward the window because I was crying and didn't want Sasha to see. I made a decision that I had to get up and leave. [snorts] I told him that I keep kosher. He said to me, "Sapir, I can accept that, but if one day you come and tell me that you keep Shabbat, for example, you should know that's not going to work." That's how God wanted it. On October 7th, I decided to start keeping Shabbat. >> Wow. >> Yes. >> On Simchat Torah, you decided to start keeping it. >> Well, I was under the bed and thought this was my last moment, the end of my life. I don't know why, but I decided I would keep Shabbat and all that time I was waiting for him. I actually didn't believe we would end up together. I waited for him because I felt a force pushing me to do it. I suddenly felt a very strong connection to Sasha, especially when I was released. I prayed for him. I talked about him all the time and said, "God, why are you making me wait for someone who doesn't even believe in you?" >> Wow. >> And when he came back, that was really the first thing he said to his mother, "Mom, I know there is a God." And he always says, "Mom, I'm not saying this just because I was saved." I don't want people to think I believe just because I'm still alive. He went over his whole life, all the events that happened to him throughout his life and he said, "It can't just be a coincidence."
