Hello children. In our Torah portion
this week, Moshe continues to speak with
the Jewish people before they enter the
holy land. He tells them very important
things that will help them live well in
the land of Israel. Moshe says, "And it
will be if you listen to these laws. If
you pay attention even to the small
commandments that people sometimes take
lightly, then God will fulfill for you
all the good promises that were made
dear ancestors. What wonderful reward
awaits the Jewish people if they listen
to the commandments. God will love you
and bless you. You will multiply and
become a great nation. The land will
yield excellent produce, grain, wine,
and oil. Your cattle and sheep will
increase. There will be no sick among
you. You will defeat all your enemies.
But Moshe also warns the people about a
great danger, pride. When you eat and
are satisfied, when you build beautiful
houses and your herds grow, be careful
not to let your heart become proud and
forget the Lord your God. Moshe tells
them about all the miracles that God
performed for them in the desert. God
brought you out of Egypt with a mighty
hand, led you through the great and vast
desert, and gave you money from heaven
to eat.
He provided water for you from the rock.
Your clothes remained like new and your
feet did not swell from walking on the
sand.
Now Moshe describes the holy month in
detail. Every morning God sent you bread
from heaven. The mun was white and
tasted sweet like honey.
Whoever gathered a lot had nothing left
over. And whoever gathered a little did
not lack. Before Shabbat, a double
portion of mun fell from the sky so you
wouldn't have to gather it on Shabbat.
Anyone who tried to save mun for the
next day found it spoiled and full of
worms. But Moshe warns and emphasizes
again, don't think that your own
strength and power brought you this
will.
Remember that it is God who gives you
the strength to succeed. Moshe continues
and sternly warns, "If you forget God
and follow other gods, you will surely
be destroyed. Just as God destroyed the
nations before you, so will he do to you
if you don't listen to his voice.
He also reminds the people of the great
sin of the golden calf. Remember, do not
forget how you angered the Lord your God
in the wilderness. He tells the Jewish
people, "I went up to receive the
tablets. I was there for 40 days and 40
nights. I did not eat or drink. God said
to me, go down. The Jewish people have
committed a terrible sin." And when I
came down, I discovered the sin of the
golden calf. Out of sorrow, I broke the
tablets. Then God said to me, "Now I
will destroy the Jewish people and make
you into a great nation. I prayed to God
without stopping for another 40 days."
Moshe continues and says, "It's
important for you to know what God wants
from us. And now, Israel, what does the
Lord your God ask of you? Just five
simple things. to fear God, to walk in
his ways, to love him, to serve him with
all your heart and all your soul, and to
keep his commandments and statutes.
The entire universe belongs to God, but
he specifically chose you to be his
treasured people. Moshe mentions special
commandments.
Fillin, and you shall bind them as a
sign upon your hand, and they shall be
as ornaments between your eyes. Muza,
and you shall write them on the
doorposts of your house and on your
gates. Torah study and you shall teach
them diligently to your children and God
promises if you do all this then the
rains will come in their season. The
fields will yield their produce and your
livestock will be well fed. Moshe
describes the wonderful land of Israel,
a land of mountains and valleys, a land
that drinks water from the rain of the
heavens, a land of wheat and barley,
vines, figs and pomegranates. A land of
olive oil and honey. a land where you
will eat bread without poverty. But
there is an important condition. Don't
be tempted to follow other gods, for
then the heavens will close and there
will be no rain. Now the Jewish people
stand before an amazing opportunity to
live in the Holy Land as a holy nation.
How will they succeed and will
challenges await them along the way? We
will tell you about that in the next
episode.
