okay good evening everybody and welcome
to so anytime project inspire each live
and looking forward to sharing some
insights with you and the lessons that I
personally learned from of Nora Weinberg
I had great good fortune of being a
Talmud a student of his for 26 years and
parish and thank God I was you know a
closed Hamid I had you know it was a
great great merit opportunity that I had
to be able to learn from him for all
those years you know he was a man who
was a great man he was a lover of
humanity he was a lover of Hashem he was
someone who had a tremendous drive for
meaning a sense of responsibility and at
the same time he was someone who had a
tremendous sense of humor tremendous
charisma and a tremendous joy of life
and a tremendous wisdom that went with
it I was fortunate enough when I was 17
years old to come to Asia tour and my
first introduction to Asia tour it was a
daily class that's rabbi Weinberg gave
and that was called the 48 ways to
wisdom now I want to introduce and
really talk today about some of those
ways and I'm going to explain in a
minute but the bottom line of what the
way that he approached life and the way
he approached her was in the following
way that he understood and explained
this to us that there is if there is a
God who created the world then surely
that God would create a manual way to
explain it an instruction manual to
explain this is what we are supposed to
do in this world and he was explained
that if you buy a game comes with a set
of instructions if you buy a radio okay
it comes with a little booklet if you
buy a car it comes with some written
instructions but you knew that need the
oil instructions as well the more
complex right they're bigger the
instructions so if God created the world
it makes sense that would come
instruction manual and it explained that
that's what the Torah is it's the
instruction manual from the creator of
the universe how to get the most out of
life he said it makes sense that he was
studying because imagine the following
scenario you know a child comes to you a
17 year old child comes he says mom dad
can I borrow the car keys and say wow
you know I didn't know that you have you
learn how to drive and he/she would say
you know what no I haven't I'm just
giving it a spin or if God forbid were
in a situation with someone looked like
they were well was sake maybe he had a
heart attack and somebody says please
give me give me a knife I'm gonna
operate and he said wow I didn't know
you were a doctor he said he said no no
the doctors giving it as bad right you
say to the son you know my hunted don't
do this don't play this game at home
don't give it a spin if you don't know
how to drive don't give understand if
you didn't if you didn't learn how to
drive if you didn't learn how to become
a doctor or a surgeon right don't play
this game it's dangerous right
right why would explain okay how much
fun what's more so life itself
marriage bringing up children having a
sense of meaning of life knowing how to
be happy all these things what we give
it a spin we give it a stab you know
what there's an instruction manual that
we should be learning learn the
instructions of life first right and
then you'll know how to utilize how to
live life to the fullest and not giving
it a stab or giving it a spin without
knowing what we're doing and therefore
in the in the 48 ways to wisdom which is
really a section from the Pirkei Avot
letter the ethics of the fathers assist
chapter the sick Mishnah he would
explain there are 48 different ways to
acquire wisdom and we say here explain
each day would give it a different class
right
but each one would help you use your
potential and if you could master all of
them you become a master of life and we
went into these classes and it was
amazing to hear that life wisdom that we
learnt from poky avos from ethics of the
fathers from rabbi Weinberg so I like
share with you a few
these insights today it's particularly
appropriate because during this time
period from Pesach to show Luis right
there's 49 days and our rabbis tell us
revenues jalsa salana and i believe from
the zohar as well and for the mystical
writings the rabbi's tell us that each
day corresponds for the first 48 days to
each one of these 48 ways and the 49th
day you review them or before you can
come to the acceptance of the torah unto
us so we're not going through all of
them we didn't have quite enough time
for that but i want to share some
insights that i gained and like i'd like
to share with you from the fully eight
ways hopefully wisdom for living that
can change your life so the first thing
that he would say it's number one right
what's number one of the 48 ways is the
talmud friend it's constant learning
constant growth and he would explain
that really in order to be somebody
who's growing in life all the time a
person first of all has tell
appreciation that life is good right you
know otherwise you can go through life
and you know we're going to do get a
kill time you heard that expression
killing time right that's not good
that's because you haven't decided life
isn't really worth living it has no
value but if every moments has valuable
so then you will use it to the full and
therefore you have to appreciate life so
you said how you know the person goes
through life and says a complainer you
know it says you know what you do I
didn't ask to be born he said you know
what you would do you take that guy you
take him another airplane take him high
up can you push him out you give him an
you give him a parachute but guess what
he's coming down falling to the ground
is having a hard time opening that
question what happens no praise to the
Shem please help me open this okay it's
1440 40 just before he goes to the
ground the parachute opened what is he
saying this complainer he says thank God
that I'm alive and he'll enjoy life for
the next few days before he starts
complaining again but we understand the
rain that the world we complain we're
not appreciating
physically valuable right so he would
give an example of for us to appreciate
this he said it could have been on a bus
right
can you see a guy taking five dollar
bill and throws it out the window
did you ever see that probably not but
another five minutes goes by he takes
another five dollars he throws that out
the window he can't believe it
another five minutes takes another five
dollars just half a window Wow
after you know half an hour okay he's
thrown let's do the arithmetic yeah
thirty dollars out the window the guy
isn't crazy crazy maybe go around the
bus and find catchment but he say he
guys insane right so he would say what's
more valuable time or money what five
minutes or five dollars of course five
minutes of life was the end of your life
you had another five minutes that's far
more that's so what more than any money
but what do we do when we get on a bus
we sit on the bus 5 minutes goes by we
throw it out a window another 5 min half
an hour off the bars like what I really
cheese
how much more crazy is that right that
we don't utilize the time that we have
if it is sent if throwing out 5 minutes
5 excuse me $5 every five minutes is
crazy how much more so it is to fight to
throw out your five minutes and sitting
for the next half now have to appreciate
that life is valid bill and he always
quote the posit that Abraham is a cane
barber yeoman it says in the Torah
Abraham was old but be young and he came
with his days it means that what why did
it sounds like the same thing he was
already came with his days means he's
old so what as we know it was old but he
used every single moment of his life to
the full and that's what we need to do
Craig the first of the 48 ways is to
understand that use a life to the full
don't waste a moment and that's what we
do when we say Shamar you know you know
a person sitting like even when they're
about to die okay this particular
station about why because even at the
last moment of life we try to understand
what is this life about what is the
purpose of life even at the very last
moment right so therefore the first of
four ways is to appreciate a life it's
great
every moments opportunity to grow and to
learn and that's number one now number
two of the 48 ways it's me at ha Osen
listen with your lip with your ears now
what else is going to listen with so so
he'll explain that when I say to you
listen right could mean many things
listen to me it could be pay attention
right because you're not paying
attention listen to me listen to me
could be listen to what I'm telling you
to do listen you tell your children why
don't you listen listen to what I'm
telling you to do but should be chosen
is listen with your ears listen up I try
understand so he will explain that in
life you have to go through life trying
to understand each day what is it that
you learnt in life you learn something
you read something you had an experience
just what is it define it so you would
give me the following analogy to tapping
to defining what you've learned
so you said ok you gave the following
story there was a guy who was in his
office and he came into his office and
he'd been brought in probably by Mayor
Schuster and the guy says no rabbi I
want to tell you something I was
traveling in Israel and went from north
to south east to west and telling you
there's nothing holy about this land so
rabbi winder said wow that's really
fascinating but do you mind if I ask you
quickly said no problem is it on your
travels how many before 6 did you see he
says how many one rabbi Weinberger peace
how many good foot sticks did you see he
says what's a buffer snake but my wagon
says listen I'm asking the questions yet
you tell me how many before sticks you
saw he starts getting a little
frustrated so have I if you don't tell
me whatever foot stick means
what it is how can I tell you how many I
saw so Ramon says aha
tell me something when you were
travelling in your travels through
Israel and you say you didn't see
anything holy do you have a definition
of holiness that you can tell me to say
you didn't see it what were you
expecting
yeah God to check tap you on the
shoulder and apparition to colors of the
rainbow to appear in front of you an
angel is gonna speak to you whoa it
could be if you don't have a definition
of holiness it might have reading right
under your nose and you didn't even
notice he would explain that that's true
for all of life you need to have
definitions a person wants to have
success in life what is the definition
of success you can change it you can
change the definition of success your
whole life right and then realize that
50 60 years old it's not I'm not I don't
feel so successful and that's why people
can go through middle age crisis define
it at the beginning what is a successful
life what is my goal in life but then
yeah you can work towards it people
chase happiness and they don't have it
definitely don't define it so you feel
well if I work my way up the corporate
ladder then I'll be happy but you know
what you didn't define it right so you
could have waited you know if you define
it the beginning you could have not
wasted the 20-30 years of working way up
the corporate ladder and getting to the
top and then realizing I'm still
miserable or definition of love what is
it you know so all of these things that
references number to shamea chosen in
life you need to have clear definitions
for things that you believe in and
things are important now it's number two
now we're going to go on to the aimer
which is number number five right there
aimer means to have a sense of all over
life and I want to share this with you
in a way that my own personal experience
is that you know I used to be studying
in in the bank mad rush in study hall at
Asia Torah and Rabbi Schuster
of blessed memory used to bring students
in travelers from around the world and
he would bring them in and I would
sometimes be sitting next to him by the
door
and he would ask me would you like to to
say a few words about what we were doing
here you know act in India Cheever in
the basement language in that study hall
I said my pleasure I would often say the
following I said tell me something you
know you traveled around the world and
they would often say yes we went to
Nepal and we went to to Europe and we've
done our and I say imagine you saw some
beautiful things they would say tell me
something did you ever had the following
experience that you're walking up a
mountain and all of a sudden you take a
step it opens up in front of you is the
most beautiful view smoke capped
mountain a beautiful river or a sunset
or the sea or something profoundly
beautiful a lake that still forest that
just opens up
did you ever had that experience and I
would always say yeah yeah yeah we had
that and then I would say tell me
something wasn't that really it wasn't
that what you were looking for you were
looking for that know that that sunset
that beautiful experience no travelers
wasn't that the experience you were
looking for and many many of them would
say hey you know rabbi I wasn't
necessary at the time but it was a high
yeah you're right how did you know that
so I said why don't you think are you
having that experience the experience do
you stop in your tracks and you see this
beautiful sight and you feel uplifted by
the transcendental feeling in front of
you what is it that you're feeling when
you have that experience and they have
an experience and you know what it is
it's not just the interesting thing that
you're seeing that's bouncing off your
retina and it happens to be it's the the
beauty of creation reflects the creator
himself there's an infinite beauty that
you feel in your touching right and that
reflects to creator himself
so what you
looking really for its experience the
infinite because that's what you feel it
and I would turn to everybody in the the
Beit Midrash in the study hall in the
achiever and say you know what but you
were looking for is for all of these
guys are learning about because that's
the goal of Judaism the goal of Judaism
is that I should be able to be in touch
with a infinite being which is God right
to feel him all the time because you can
go to Nepal and have that experience
right and you can go to beautiful places
but when you come down the mountain it's
gone how do you had that feeling all the
time how do you walk with the infinite
how do you walk with God
that's the Torah that's true working on
yourself and through growing and
becoming a fully human being and through
learn Hashem Torah right through doing
that yeah you can walk with your
almighty all the time should ii see
hashem then maybe
tell me that i place got in front of you
always because if you're in touch with
god that's like you know when you pray
you should be it should be an awesome
experience you're feeling a sense of and
that's that what's the definition of all
but a person standing under the stars at
night and you see wow look at those
stars you feel how small you are
compared to the infinite nurse of wow
but it's not really in front because
there's a finite number of stars so why
are you feeling it
because you're giving in touch with the
infinite creatively on and that is
what's the sense of all it's how small I
am compared to their infinite greatness
that I'm experiencing and that's the
feeling that was for the all of Judaism
is about all of our mitzvahs and one of
them is to get us in touch with that
infinite being and rabbi ya rabbi
Weinberg would always say that this is
the whole point there are six mitzvahs
in Judaism who the sixth constant
mitzvahs as a mitzvah tilter to be aware
of God to know there's a girl not to
believe in other gods number two number
three to understand he's one to love him
to fear Him and not to believe not to
stray off to your eyes which is your
desire
an end in themselves and your heart
which is your ego right the things
desires you know for physicality as an
end in itself and an ego my only got
other things that take us away from a
relationship which and this is it this
is what all of Judy's arms about come
and I would say Flynn come and learn
come study Torah because what you were
looking for in your travels is what
we're trying to expand experience all
the time so that's number two number
excuse me number four main is by a mer
person should work will go through life
with a sense of all right now that can
be because you stand underneath the
stars at night and it can be because you
understand look at the shells creation
and you understand that in your hands
there's there's electrons and neutrons
and it's and when you move your hand
you're moving all the electrons and it's
profound and in a feminine and in a
plant there's designer man the phloem
and then there's ecosystems and it's if
you really see the world the way it is
it's awesome but if you take it one step
further
you understand isn't infinite being with
us that were in his presence the King of
Kings the melon Malcolm luckily he's
here he's with us wow that's a sense of
all so number none that number five is
to have that sense of awe all the time
now the next one is one of the is fear
right the hero number six now this is
number six is the year and let's just
understand you want to be afraid I mean
you know what's the feeling of fear so
imagine you know you're on a you're on a
subway or in England we would say the
tube right and you see you're sitting in
there it's a late at night you're
sitting in you know in the coaches that
he said in it and you see a bunch of not
so friendly looking guys with their
blacks you know the black suits and
studs silver studs and they're coming
towards you they don't look so friendly
so what happens you have a strong dose
of fear your heart starts beating faster
so what's going on right what's the
feeling when you feel a sense of fear of
Europe is it what
happens is have a heightened sense of
awareness you feel that your your
faculties become more acute every second
makes a difference everything you do
makes a difference right so you're
feeling more alive
so the reality is that fear who wants to
be afraid but the rabbi Weinberg would
teach us that you've all paid to be
afraid right we want him why because a
pleasure
what do you mean who wants to be afraid
is it yeah you've taken those roller
coasters right why you paid good money
to be afraid or you might go to it you
know plus it might have been to a horror
film okay it gets you afraid why do
people do their you know why they do
that because they want to feel they're
alive we're walking around half asleep
because we're not using our faculty
faculties when you're afraid you're
using your faculties to the foot you're
fully alive so at the same time you know
what but but you know I don't feel the
sense I wouldn't be afraid so where am i
Weinberg would explain you know there
are four blocks to fear right one block
is that you feel it's not pleasurable
and a second block is that you feel that
you're not really gonna be achieved you
can be intimidated when I'm afraid I
can't do anything right the third is
that I think I'm not gonna really be
myself because when you're afraid you're
motivated by fear I can't be me and the
fourth is that you know it's a do thing
to live my head of fear is a little bit
demeaning so he would explain that you
know what when you're fully alive
there's a there's a there's a pleasure
of being alive right you see the pain
fear is a pleasurable pain right there's
a pain that no pain no gain
when you put effort into life and get
pleasure out when you are aware of and
you have faculties that are heightened
right then you feel fully alive and you
feel a sense of pleasure and so second
of all yeah you could be yourself right
because when you're afraid of a sham
which is what we're talking about to
live with the sense of Europe it's
yearís Hashem to be afraid of a Shem
right is when your family when you do
what a sham one's then you're really
able to be yourself and you know what it
doesn't do abilities it doesn't take
away from the abilities because you know
what if you're afraid you've been chased
by a lion you'll run a lot faster we've
all held up the stories of the old lady
you saw a child gone for bit under a car
and she the old lady it's at the car to
save the child because when you have a
sense of fear here it gets you to use
your abilities and strength much more
and finally right the sense of fear
Craig it can be a little bit you know to
do things out of fear yeah it's true it
may be a little demeaning frame you'd
rather do things that'll of a better to
do the right thing
hello sense of fear and the wrong thing
right and a sense of love so really you
use the fear the mitzvah of fear is to
understand what is that right
you see the fear is to see to see the
consequences that's really what fake
what fear is the word for a year air
Iraq in Hebrew comes from the word Allah
rock to see you're seeing reality
clearly every human being has the
opportunity the incredibly great to be
to use his potential to the film we
could squander in and just waste his
life away see reality see truth face
truth live life to the phone or to say
forget it no see what the opportunity is
is to be to live with fear to fear to
understand there are consequences to
what I do and that's what theory that
consequences I can do great things in my
life
or god forbid you can just not just put
my head in the sand and say leave me
alone and I can just go through life
mediocre and you'll miss the full
potential of you who you are much
greater to be to be in reality to see or
not to see that is the question that's
what fear to see reality see
consequences so they were the fact that
every moment is a tremendous opportunity
every day is an opportunity every week
every month every year for you to use
your potential to the full thanks to
living with a sense of fear that makes a
difference I think you're gonna make
that difference or you're not right now
living with that means that you'll feel
that rush that scent like a kind of a
roller coaster
you really are why I've even known yes
so painful because you're putting in the
effort and it's hard but the pleasure of
having that fear is where you can really
be alive like you come off a roller
coaster all the time you'll feel great
so that's that's the year and now the
next one after the euro is number seven
which is but another right to have
humility now when you think of someone
who's a humble person you know what you
think of you think of a guy who walks
around you know it's got no self-esteem
right so rabbi one that would tell us
that you know one that's not that's not
a common person that's a wimp what's a
humble person a humble person is someone
who says you know what the life isn't
about me it's not about my ego so what
is about life is about doing what's
right living a meaningful existence and
if I can do that right I don't care what
people think of me and that's a truly
humble person and it would explain that
a person who lives that had that type of
humility is a person who has tremendous
charisma now how do you get to that how
do you get to the fact that person who
lives in live with doing what's right so
he would bring what are the other 48
ways it
oh hey attend Sadako's love doing what's
right love what's doing what's right
that well how did you do that so you
would say that you know what a person
who doesn't know what is prepared to die
for hasn't begun to live we have to know
what we prepare to give all of life up
for to give life meaning otherwise we're
just living for life saying I'm going to
work to get a job to get some money to
support my family to have children so
that they can go to work and get a job
and earn some money and have children so
they can get a job you know it goes on
it's a cycle what you talking about
what's the purpose I'm living to eat or
eating to live right am i living to work
working to obviously I'm working to live
so if I'm working to me what am i living
for
she would say this is how you know what
are you prepared to die for if you know
that then I live for it so I think we
all understand that you know one there
are things that we'd be prepared to die
for you know if the is Israel will call
us out but we need to fight for Israel
because we're surrounded by enemies god
forbid okay but we would think you know
work for the sake of Israel for the
Jewish people we do it we do and we're
proud of the other soldiers who do okay
what were their heroes or god forbid so
I won't say you know will kill you or
you kill a million innocent people we
probably give our a line up why because
we're dying to do what's right or the
other way of saying is we die rather
than do what's wrong right if you're
prepared to die to be good
give it all up you'd rather be good than
bad right if you'd rather give it live
to be good right if you give up your
whole life to be good and use your life
to be good right so he would add if you
prepare to live to be good to die to be
good then you should live to be good
it's gonna live to be good you might as
well enjoy that okay so you would
explain them in the in the 48 way oh oh
hey listen Meisha in love the right way
excuse me that's another one but not oh
it's a Dark Arts love doing the right
thing which is number 33 right he would
explain it that you're not only supposed
to do the right thing but you're
supposed to love it now we often look at
doing the right thing as it's always
like Texas right it's like you know I
have to pay my taxes but if there's any
way that I didn't have to pay my taxes
wouldn't that be great so the reality is
that sometimes we look at doing the
right thing being good is it sort of
like you know taxes I have to do it but
if I use anyway I didn't have to do all
these obligations they're sort of like
tackling me all these love homes Jewish
rules that I have to do you know see if
it's taking away from my face you enjoy
life let's have fun
so you'll explain that no no that doing
the right thing is a deep pleasure right
it's not just an obligation but it's
also an obligation right but it's a
pleasure how do we know that because you
see if someone say to you are you a good
man
are you a good woman and you could
answer sincerely
thank God I am
do you know in a pleasure that is it's
the pleasure of integrity
it's a pleasure of living with your
values you see unfortunately we look at
it as baby Noah I'm trapped by all these
laws you know by doing what's right and
I can't get those other pleasures out
there it's wrong right because when you
live with what's right and you're a
person I do what's right and that's what
my life is about that's a deeper
pleasure
that's a heavy pleasure right that gives
you a sense of weight and that's what
Rabbi wine would say when you live that
way that's the true charisma the true
charisma is when you're committed to
doing what the right thing is no matter
what no matter what the f is and no
whatever people think of me right I do
the right thing as the true charisma
right and people take you seriously not
only that but you have tremendous sense
of deep pleasure in life because every
time we compromise or what's right yeah
it takes away a little bit of our
self-respect
we don't feel so good about ourselves
you know when people of high society a
court doing things that they shouldn't
be doing right and they go to prison
right they don't get them nice and Forks
in prison you know why because when a
person feels that they were caught doing
something that they should knew and
everybody knows they shouldn't have been
doing yeah they feel a tremendous sense
of shame they feel a tremendous sense of
lack of self respect to the extent that
a person god forbid can feel at all
because that pleasure of doing the right
thing is so great and the opposite the
pain of feeling that you didn't do the
right thing is equal is equally great
that's the pleasure we have to
understand that in life right to do
what's right to be good it is not just
something obligated to because God told
us to but he's giving us the opportunity
to have tremendous pleasure in our life
we only realize it to give to others to
care for others to do what God wants you
know to have integrity to live with your
values is a tremendous pleasure and
that's the pleasure of okay as it's
tacos all aren't doing the right thing
now there is another aspect of humility
which is not just the fact that I wanted
to
right right and my ego I don't care
about my ego but there's another aspect
which comes up in the 48 ways which is a
no mercy
toe the Atma right which is that I don't
take credit for myself these are the two
sides of humility one is it's not about
me it's about doing what's right the
other side is I don't take credit and I
why I didn't would explain there are a
few different ways that in life we tend
to take credit one is we'll take credit
for our talents and our abilities and he
always used to tell the story of a guy
that he knew there was a it was a you
know the guy was the life saver whether
they say bye at the swimming pool or by
the sea and you know he would be sitting
there and it was a long thing you got to
him and say come and say you know what
tell me the time and you'd go up to him
and tell you tell me the time and he
would go like this and flex his muscles
and he'd be you know use the opportunity
of telling you the time to show you how
muscular he has you can imagine a person
you know he's know been working out you
know it's like cast iron stomach I am
the greatest right because you know so
our talents a person who happens to be
very intelligent you intend to take a
little bit of credit that oh you know
I'm so great because I have whatever
talent it is that I tend to have that's
where a little bit of ego comes in and I
take credit for it that obviously was a
gift to you from a Shem but that's
number one we take credit for our
talents the second is our
accomplishments right you did something
you achieve something you feel like you
know what I deserve credit
but the reality in is that you see you
know and rubber band that were good the
following analogy imagine if you went to
a to to a banking year you cashed a
check and then you come over to me and
you say you know what
wherever I am you know I'm the guys and
why what did you do what I did I took a
check I went to the bank and I cashed it
what an achievement that I Creek you
know you took a check in you cashed it
if you didn't do it you really it's no
big whenever we accomplished in
right it's it's you know this is what we
created for right we created to to do to
to accomplish it's it's it's not
something to throw oh look you know
there's a guy who has on his on his you
know imagine a guy who has on his room
his high school diplomas right
oh no it's then even on his high school
diploma says his diplomas from
kindergarten and he sees a you know 650
year old man he's good as to him I'm so
proud of my of my Kim gun but you know
so you think he's a little funny what
about if he's got all the credentials at
this dis doctor and that Professor name
so then no wow it thinks that that's
that's okay but the reality is you see
we have to understand right that we are
the human potential is so great there's
so much wrong that we can do as there as
that as tricky as dominum eric says in
psalms ma adam kiss Carina what is man
but my inner street is friend what is
man you couldn't remember him been Adam
who been on to get food to eat if Kadena
that you take note of him we the yeah
yeah we're what are we we're little
speck of dust on the face of the
universe
yeah but us ray who might manikin me but
you made him a little bit less think God
Himself the potential of the human is so
great you take you something so really
whatever we achieve in life it's nothing
compared to what we could do so to take
pride in it take pleasure in it don't
take pride realize even your
accomplishments are a gift to you and
the third thing is your righteousness
you know we think if we did something
good so that's really me because I
challenge true get so rabbi Weinberg
would give an example imagine imagine I
came to you and I said you know what I
did an amazing thing today you see this
knife
coming at myself with a knife and I was
about to cut my nose off right and I
really you know I was this close to
cutting my nose up but then I I was able
to conquer my desire and I took that
night and I threw it down to the ground
and you know what I overcame that
temptation I didn't cut my nose off
isn't that amazing and you say like you
know again you crazy because how do you
cut your nose off right you would have
been destroying yourself that would be
really stupid you don't deserve that
much credit for not doing something
really stupid so when we do the right
thing yeah that's all you created for to
not do the right things like cutting up
your nose okay the tape tape to take
pride in it right is in the state don't
take pride in your talents and your and
your accomplishments and your
righteousness take pleasure yes you
should take better realize all these
things are a gift from the creator of
the universe and those are the two sides
of humility realized that that likely
isn't about my ego it's about too much
right and I'll give you tremendous
pleasure don't take credit right because
all of these everything you have is a
gift from the confident being there's so
much more that's expected of us now the
next one is dealing with frustration and
as you go through life Erica I am number
22 of the 48 way it deals with dealing
with the frustration everybody weinberg
used to tell us do you know how to deal
with frustration enjoy it say what are
you talking about frustration is
frustrating how can you enjoy it so he
would tell us that no all of you have
gone into a store and bought a box of
frustration okay what are you talking
about he said he bought a box of
frustration what is he referring to you
go into a store you buy a thousand-piece
puzzle right is there anything more
frustrating than trying to put in a
thousand pieces and the puzzle together
imagine if you bought a apartment with
five pieces much easier why don't you
just buy one of those no pain no
pleasure in a in a puzzle with five
pieces to play
comes if it has 20 pieces maybe if
you're five years old you don't if you
you know hundred pieces come on that's
that's kid stuff right 100,000 people
whoa right that's really something right
so but what isn't it bit is frustrating
so why why is it pleasurable because
there's a pleasure of creativity there's
a pleasure of discovering oh I see a
little bit of sky here and has a little
white thing here is another piece with
it you could it's a creative pleasure
it's a pleasure of discoveries it's
pleasure of working it out
seeing the clues and understanding so
this is an analogy all of life that when
you go through a frustrating time you
have to reframe and you have to say you
know what Hashem is trying to teach me
something there's something you know
instead of getting frustrated right let
me look for what he's trying to teach me
let me look for the clues let me try to
understand what it is I'm supposed to
learn here right when you do that then
you can enjoy it right because Hashem is
guiding through whatever you're going
through in life HN is guiding you
through and he's teaching you now
sometimes it can be difficult how are we
going to solve this problem difficult
but if you understand that there's you
know there's something I was supposed to
learn from this and you will take it
seriously in that way then you can
really take pleasure in the frustrating
situations that you're in it would add
it then really see if you get a remove
excu you can have two types of rubik's
cube a rubik's cube that you know is
made in a way that you can work it out
with all the different colors coming out
on the red and blue and yellow oh you've
got the he's a Rubik's Cube
but you know I can't guarantee you would
actually there's actually it actually
works you want to give it a try do you
say forget it I'm not giving it a try
there two types of problems in life what
a type of problem is a problem that I
can solve right I know is solvable it's
like a math question math question that
I know there's a there's a solution if
you don't know if there's even a
solution forget it right you can spend
hours and hours on the math problem if
you know that the solution I could get
if I really try so
eight that the two types of problems in
life one is a problem I know there's a
solution and there was a problem that I
don't know know so when you understand
that Hashem is taking you through a life
and the problems that you have are
really on a deeper level it's
tailor-made for you and they don't
there's a solution there's a way that
you can deal with this to maximize your
potential in life and achieve your life
goals right and to become the full
person because I've shadows running the
world for you and he's with you and I
hope you become the person you can
become and sometimes these situations
are only to bring out who you can be
then you know that all of these problems
are 8i problems that problems with the
solution when you understand that then
you know you can get through it
I know look through the look look
through the other situations is a way to
grow a way to learn what's it and life
becomes so much more fascinating that's
how to do with frustration right and in
a certain way you know you don't want to
put a puzzle that's too easy because no
pleasure in there saying what some ideas
so the man of difficulty in lives to
make it that you're going to achieve and
grow and understand because that's
really the way to have a pleasurable
life so this is another mother 48 ways
it's okay bsite Oaxaca's love criticism
now who loves criticism come on you know
that's a tall order so wrap my Wainman
would explain the following and if as
person came to you and said you know
what it preface it with the following
question if someone asks you what's more
valuable what you appreciate more to be
good what has been rich what would you
rather be a good person pretty good
right that's a dick righteous person but
you know what you don't really have that
much money
you're just scraping by or you're a
really rich person you got the money you
got the homes you got the yachts you got
it all right thank you thoroughly evil
witch would you go for so I've asked
this question to hundreds of making
thousands of people right
I'd rather Weinberg did and I've never
had anybody told me I'd rather be
thoroughly evil and rich okay
maybe rich and righteous okay that's
yeah but choice between on the other we
understand that being good is more
valuable it's more what we want and
being rich so if a person would come to
you and say listen you know you come
over to you and they're really being
rude and they start swearing at you and
you know god forbid and they say you
blankety blank blank blank and they do
they're really laying it on thick and in
the middle of this they get out a
checkbook and they write you a check for
a million dollars
they put it in your pocket and then they
say and you blankety plan to carry on
with all their profanities and they're
about to walk off you know what you do
say listen my friend you know anytime
you want to come and say profanities at
me here's my card
come again and you walk off will give me
in that dollars and you do a jig
throwing books and similarly if someone
comes to you and they say to you you
know you did this wrong you needed that
wrong and they're really and they're
really upsetting you but if they give
you in their criticism a little bit of
an inkling on how you can be a better
person you know what you should say you
should put it in your pocket
and say you know get and say to that
person you know what any time you want
to be not nice to me he is my Khan
because if that person gave you the
smallest insight on how to be a better
person right you should do it all the
more so you should do it cheat down the
street because being good good is better
is more than able to ask them being rich
you just don't appreciate it so if you
understand and a person gives you
insight it's had it be better a better
person you should be very appreciative
even if they didn't do it in the nicest
way and we understand that you know what
people who are serious about life don't
pay to criticism an Olympic gold medal
medalist will pay a trainer to tell them
everything that he's doing wrong right a
person is a business coach you did this
wrong you should do this with it because
when you're serious about something if
we're serious about life we've truly
means serious felt being good pays that
one to tell you what you're doing wrong
okay because that's what life is about
right and when we appreciate that yeah
you want people to tell a trouble with
us as we get a little bit comfortable
and our ego gets in the way and we
get what life is about what we
understand that every insight into being
a better person then we really love
criticism yeah
because it'll help me be a better person
I'd like to share with you people tell
me know we're coming towards the end but
I'd like to share with you a couple more
points pill Paula Tom Needham which is
number 12 right number 12 is growth
through teaching well you should have
tell me them even if you're not a big
rabbi but everybody said what does it
mean to have tell me them students you
know when it should me in it means it
means that you should share what you
know teach don't preach but more than
that
share share the wisdom that you have and
this is not and remember Weinberg always
used to say profound thing yeah you know
what the greatest disease is out there
yeah the greatest disease he would say
is ignorance people don't know what life
is about people haven't read the
instruction manual that we spoke about
at the beginning right people don't know
how to have happy marriages or they
don't know how to bring up the children
or they don't know what is meaningful
about life or they don't they they
haven't necessarily learned the wisdom
of the Torah
so as you learn Torah right share what
you know because you see if you had the
cure for cancer and God forbid you
didn't share it well would that not be a
tragedy
it would be a tremendous tragedy so all
the similar little friend if as you
learn wisdom fill event frame share it
with others because that wisdom for
living it can help people who live life
and we know that we have our brothers
and sisters out there know who don't
necessarily you know come to classes
sheering like this from home they may
they may they may not be in touch with
the beauty of their heritage and the
Torah and we know that we all know that
huh we know the beauty of it so share it
don't keep it to yourself with heart and
this was one of the main themes of rabbi
Weinberg is that we're part of the
Jewish people which are men left malesko
Han in the garage we're a priestly
nation the holy nation
right and we represent God in the world
that we have a Torah which is profound
and has all the answers is the
instruction manual share it in a way
that's not too judgmental share it
because you know if you have it and you
don't share that's a tragedy it's our
responsibility people Tom medium share
the wisdom just an insight that you have
share it with with with the people that
you know so like to end with the fully
anyway number 21 which is really as we
go through the serie each day
corresponds to a different one of the 48
ways according their different listings
of the 48 ways and you know K different
can vary but according to the listing
that why make one out number 21 was the
mute spoke now there are look which
means minimize laughter now there are a
lot of things to minimize a tour mean in
my sleep minimize conversation right so
in all of the 48 ways that same minimize
my while I would explain it doesn't mean
don't do it then they don't sleep sleep
isn't bad it minimized connotation I
think don't don't talk it means don't
talk too much you talk too much you know
it's not good either okay sleep too much
same with it laughter if you're laughing
be at people that's very bad if you're
laughing when it becomes you know
frivolity it's not it's not a good way
to live life but there's a way of
laughing that's profound and powerful
and one of the things that Rabbi Wagner
once said to me I remember I was
actually with him and he said to me I am
you know there's really only one real
joke really
he said one joke that's it I say well I
thought I heard a bunch of them but sees
it yeah all the other jokes are just a
facsimile of this one essential joke but
just a different way of putting together
okay promote I said do you mind if you
tell me the joke so he started telling
me this story which was a very serious
story I wasn't sure where the Joker's
but I'll share with you when he told me
he said you know there's a there's a
fennel
Abraham Cordish Hashanah which I happen
to personally know him in you wish and I
am in Jerusalem and he lived in
Baltimore and one day Ruffman and learns
that son unfortunately he was shot in
the back and you know he went ended up
in hospital he came around when he came
around he's paralyzed from the head from
the neck down quadriplegic and he's
sitting there and he's like wow I can't
move so he says to himself well you know
what we're gonna do now he says I don't
know he says well here what's life about
says I don't know and then he laughed
why did he laugh right
he loved because he had a realization he
said all the time I can move my hands
and my feet I never asked myself the
most important question in life is what
am i living for I never asked her that
right and he laughed right now I want to
finish the story with him because what
happened was he said okay you know well
now I'm asking the question so then he
asked himself wait a second if I would
have gone through all of life being able
to move my hands and my feet maybe I
would have never asked the question well
am i living for
he said that's true so then he asked
himself the following question what's
better to go through life all of life
being able to move my hands and my feet
I never asked the question well is life
living what is what is the point of life
what is the what is the meaning
assistance of what we're here for
why are we here what am I supposed to be
doing I never asked that question but I
could look my hand what's better to live
that way what should be a quadriplegic
and have an answer to that question and
live the rest of my life with an answer
and he said without doubt yeah better to
have an answer that question and not be
able to move my hands and my feet this
would be that quadriplegic right than to
go through say he said and therefore
this was the best thing that ever
happened to me I'm not saying it I'm
just telling you what he said I met this
man he he went to yerushalaim he ended
up in Israel he actually studied at Asia
Torah for a while he became a Hasidic
Jew he lived in by other gun I went to
his house for Shabbat and I helped him
cut his meat and I helped him take him
to the restroom by night you know and
this man was always smiling he was
beaming right I know so let's go that's
this interesting story about him
recorded but what's the joke you see the
joke is that what's a judge laughter is
because of the paradox paradox is you
see a man with a with a top hat and a
tie and he slips on a banana peel so you
laugh why because it's paradoxical brain
he thinks he's such a big shot a big
deal
right and even a banana peel can slip
them up right it's because it's you're
seeing the paradox in what just happened
so what's the ultimate paradox the
ultimate parents that around college
with real languages that's leaning to
existence there's a purpose to life and
I'm missing it because I'm so caught up
and moving around I didn't even think
I'm too busy to deal with the most
important question like which is what is
life about and another way of saying
this paradox is to say you know what
that's an infinite being that's here
that loves us with an infinite love and
we're missing it we're walking around
with our head in the sand thinking for
me that's the joke you know laughs and
you get the joke that if we can laugh
and how old crazy laughter destroys if
you laugh at a person
god forbid you destroy him that's why
it's so bad to laugh at someone if you
laugh in a room and there's tension you
ever had giggles in a laugh and all of
sudden everybody's loving the tension is
gone because laughter destroys if you
love and your own craziness right can
you destroy that that's why we laugh on
Purim right so I'm laughing at the
craziness laughing getting gigs Ihara
right and you destroy it but when you
when you love so we'd love for the
craziness of missing the fact that we're
in we are every moment of existence is
so infinitely valuable and we're walking
around missing that the love of the
almighty Wow right and that's the that's
the the last point the PATA share with
you which is that that's what we're they
were not used to teach us that all of
life is really to understand that
there's a infinite being that loves us
with the confirm of that and that's what
we're here for right that's the whole
point of exist and even say it the
following way
they said the hover cook came it was the
one of the last prophet and he and he
took the home tour in 630 ministers meet
him on our hearts and he said this one
mitzvah is the essence of the hotel what
was that
Sadek been not so easier its attic lives
through in his
munna in his belief in God and said that
he would say that's the essence of all
of the Torah that we're trying to do
which we spoke about about the six
consonants this is the idea Shen knowing
that there's a God understanding that
there's a God is what align what all of
Judaism and deepen your relationship
with him is what it's all about and he
would say the essence of understanding
God
you know and knowing God is to
understand that he loves you
essence of a morning is to understand
that God loves you right because if you
understand it God loves you I love him I
remember for a friend of mine told me I
heard the story that a person was
sitting with rabbi Weinberg and he said
to him how do you love God so he said
well tell me something do you love me he
says yes of course Rebbe of course I
love you he said why do you love me so
I'll tell you why not me because you
know I love you so what we understand
that Hashem loves us with an infinite
love and unconditional love right when
we understand that and we really feel
the love Hashem loves us we love him and
we know him and we appreciate him I
remember one time I was walking in
Manhattan with him and I was a little
bit you know I would confide in my Rebbe
at times time and I was complaining
about something and I am I can I say and
he stopped in the middle of the street
and he was in the street on the sidewalk
of course and he and he was a big man he
looked amazing you're crazy so we may
become crazy crazy works and what did
you think if life isn't going your way
hashem doesn't love you anymore
he said you're wrong shannon loves doing
everything that happens through and it's
just not exactly the way that you
thought you've got to look for the
clueless you could understand what it is
the love is just the same I remember the
last time I saw him and he was in pain
it was a two and a half weeks before he
passed away and I remember he was in
pain there was a lot of pain and he saw
that I noticed and he looked at me and
he said Hashem is sweetening my gun Adan
I
is it sweetening my life for me in a
world to come I was like wow because he
saw Hashem love in every single aspect
of life and then if you can do that
you'll be a great person
so my blessing to you is that you should
be able to take some of these insights
and utilize them in your life go to the
48 ways listen to the 48 ways goes to H
audio calm and you can listen to rubbing
Weinberg on tape it's it's really
life-changing or you can go to H calm
and you can read them they're written up
really beautifully and each of these
ways can be life-changing so I have a
little insight for yourself and please
God we should be able to take these
insights and master them could make
ourselves into a vessel so that we can
receive all the goodness and the
distance to finish them whenever my wine
boat would be asked for a blessing it
could be for children could be for to
get tempted for a it could be
for whatever it is he was skipper than
that blessing and she's coming with our
people to finish with and you should
know that Hashem loves you because
that's the greatest blessing blessing
you all you should appreciate how much
she loves you usually appreciate that
and we should be able to do live lives
to the full be that vessel that can grow
use our potentials the fool and he thank
you very much have a good night
