rwol how lucky we are
tonight we have K everybody listen to
this
the woman who is responsible for night
for tonight she single-handedly pulled
this evening together she is a Brooklyn
party planner who has a passion for
causes that promote Unity look at what's
going around here and believes in the
strength of Jewish Women worldwide to
change the world testing change the
world okay here we go now that I uh took
care of that I want to know something
how many of you came last year
well there's a reason why so many are
back this year how many of you never
ever experienced a calab bake
before I wish we could hear the other
the other rooms I'm going to come around
later to really greet everybody the way
they should be greeted and I want to
know what you did to be so lucky to have
the honor to be here tonight because as
I walked in there were hundreds of women
who cannot get into the building my
phone alone has been going off the hook
please get me ticket jimy you have
connection I say no I don't have
connection I felt horrible so many women
and girls couldn't make it tonight so if
you're here you did something right to
earn this so you go
girl it's really it's a sold out event I
want to tell you the women of last year
we asked them what was your favorite
part of last year's calab and now one
woman said any specific thing they all
had the same common response you know
what that was what do you
mean the greatest part about it just
being in a room with over or a hall with
over thousands of Jewish women that in
itself is everything I could ask for
this is what the ladies are
saying another lady told me she happened
to be non religious she said shimmy you
know the Shabbat candle lights if you
take a room and it's all dark and you
can't see a thing all you need is two
Shabbat candles and they will illuminate
the whole room and she said last year
when I looked around that's all I was
thinking about is is Shabbat candles
every single lady represented a light
her special Essence that she shines and
she gives to the world so as I look
around here it's amazing how much light
there is to give it's literally blinding
unless it's like
this the spotlight but I would like to
believe that it's you ladies who give
that light that really really strong
light there was another lady who said
shimi she said shimri rather sh you know
before Shabbat where you have to cook
and you have to clean and you have to
shop and bake and organize and prepare
and everything is like so hectic and
then right before Shabbat it's
like and that moment when Shabbat kicks
in and that that feeling of Tranquility
that feeling of peacefulness of calmness
you disconnect from the world and you
connect to what really matters just like
theal here guys life takes over you get
busy with our children with our husbands
with our jobs with our deadlines with
elections who didn't sleep last
night clearly I'm
hyper
so sometimes we lose focus and then we
have a thing called the kalalake should
I show you something what I do in uh the
Zone anybody's from The Zone I think
they're in the other room but check it
out check it out I go like this and
anybody who's up here and you want calm
and quiet check it out if you hear me
clap once if you hear me clap again make
sure the girl next to you doesn't talk
if you hear me clap three times if you
hear me pick up your hands if the lady
next to you is talking just go like
this yeah there's nobody talking there I
just do that that's how you get
quiet hi welcome you're late I'm just
kidding I got that every time in Mone
but I want to tell you something there's
no doubt in my mind that the president
of all the presidents of the world is
looking down right now and is so proud
so proud
of his Jewish daughters so I just want
to give you a big shout out give
yourselves a
shout I'm serious look around you this
is magical I want to show you this is
just one room of many many rooms so I do
you realize that there are over a
thousand women in this Hall tonight so
within our thousand women we have so
many different types of women let's
check this out how many of you are
Sparty all three of you
I could say that I'm
smarty who is
ashkenaz who has no clue what they
are so you see thei people they have on
their or the ashas people have Crane and
the people who have no clue I don't know
you probably have like Nutella or
something but the truth
is that's magical but what's more
magicals I'm going to ask you the next
question and I want you to
answer how many of you are
Jewish I love asking these questions
because we get to know each other you
get to learn the people at your table
and I want to tell you as time goes on
so do my questions like they really
change it used to be very very simple
life it used to be what type of Kala do
you like period now it's like do you
like C wheat do you like white flour do
you like half and half do you like
glutenfree by the way I am so sorry for
all the gluten-free people out there
it's a tough I'm s it's a tough life
man oh you're amazing but I really think
of you every single day when I eat
pizza and kala but you know what doesn't
change unlike these questions it's the
power of the Jewish people
it's a power of women it's a power of
Jewish Women and thank
you she's like I'm a Jewish
lady they apparently are
not speaking about power I want to tell
you something else last year how many of
you remember when we prayed how many of
you remember
that we had a moment of prayer I have to
tell tell you told this to
me last year when we had a moment of
prayer it was
incredible there were women who
literally were I watch this from the
stage hold on can we stop talking for a
second because you're ruining it for the
ladies who are speaking I mean talk
listening that was completely afraid and
slip when they were praying I watched
all around seriously women in wigs
in hair no hair
blue hair it didn't matter it was
unbelievable there were women that were
really like focusing and there were
women that were connecting and they use
this it's not like just first of all
it's and that's one of
our one of our mitv but what was
incredible is that women were sharing
their stories to the table so share away
please feel free to tell us what you're
praying for or not if you feel like you
do not feel comfortable so don't share
let's just have a a code just say life's
like a box of chocolates you never know
what you're GNA get if they would only
know what we're going through right but
the truth is that life life does happen
and everybody's going through their
struggles and it's so much so much
easier to go through it when we have
each other's support So speaking about
each other I always always do this
that's part of my contract we need to do
a shimmy selfie so I'm going to turn to
you and I'm going to say we're here live
blah blah blah when I turn it around
you're going to say we are gorgeous no
I'm just kidding I mean you you are
gorgeous you're beautiful that's not
what I'm kidding about I want you to say
we love kala with your hands up okay get
ready one two
three hi we're here live at the great
big
Cal take
79 we're here live at the great big
kalalake Brooklyn style and we have a
few ladies who would like to tell you a
little something
something I know I'm running out of time
but they're going to think Brooklyn is
slow that was like a 4 second delay we
love kala one more time and I promise
I'm gonna say get the next ready here we
go
hi hi we're here live at the great big
Cal and we have a few ladies who would
like to tell you a little something
something
yeah that was perfect right now ladies
and ladies put your hands together as we
introduce to
you
[Music]
k
welcome before I start there was one
group of girls who came to volunteer
today the bar haola group I know you're
here and we cheered you on when you were
here earlier and you deserve a great big
shout out so thank you barola
girls um Rabbi Samson would you like to
say a few words before we begin
okay
good evening ladies
welcome some reason I feel a little bit
like the odd man out
here so before I and the other man who's
here
exit I just wanted to say a couple of
words of thanks on behalf of the
organization project Inspire J
Inspire I got a call some months back
from my dear colleague and friend yon
zakutinsky he says to
me Ken like that
K I think I found the lady I said you
found what I think I found the lady said
what
lady the
lady the lady who's going to run the big
Brooklyn
khake So within a day or
two I found myself in a home in
Brooklyn with
kyom and Milan
Feldman and the conversation went a
little bit like this so what is it is it
exactly you want me to do just you're I
said you're a party planner she says yes
I said this should be easy for you she
says there's a lot of people I said well
it's it's more than a little it's you
know probably a little bit more than
medium it it's going to be big you could
look have you run a event for 50 people
before she says yes this is going to be
easy so not knowing exactly what she's
going
into this Brave lady decided to
undertake the big Brooklyn KH
event and day and night since then she
and her team have been working nonstop
and I've seen it on the on the WhatsApp
and the whatever it is to make this
event happen so ladies and ladies did I
get that right ladies and
ladies do you think she deserves a
little round of
applause now I I I I told them that I'm
not going to mention names once you
start mentioning names like honey Mandel
Mindy Weiss and Sh zakutinsky and
milanda fman ID gross you're you can't
do that so I said I'm not going to do
that I'm not doing any of that so I'm
not doing
that you know there's a power in
numbers our rabbis tell
us
when there's a lot of
people when there's a lot of people
coming together the king is
glorified what does that mean it means
that we when we Jews come together just
coming together and sitting together
there's a power in that there's a power
of awareness of who we are as a people
somehow by just being
together we realize our mission as a
people but more than that there's a
power to Jewish women we're told that
because of the Merit of the Jewish
women the Jewish people were
redeemed from a from Egypt and not just
that but in the future the Jewish people
will be redeemed in the Merit of the
women not the men the women that's
you and not just that but the Jewish
people tell
us that when we have arus when we're
United as a people that is the success
of our
nation when we love each other as a
people an Hashem the power of the
almighty is behind us ladies ladies
tonight you've put all of that together
there's a multitude of people there's a
power of women there's a Unity of people
coming together all of you from
different backgrounds and it's powerful
and it's beautiful
for and I
thank our sponsors the
grossers Isaac and Edie gross really
above and all the other sponsors for
really putting to this together without
them this wouldn't happen nor the shabas
project that's coming up over shabas
which you all come
to but I thank them and I thank you all
and I just ask you to take that home
with you that today is going to be a
blast it's going to be amazing but take
home with you the power of Jewish Women
the power of unity not just tonight from
here and onwards if you take that home
with you please God we will see the
future Redemption very soon thank you
very
much welcome project inspires Brooklyn
Hal
2016 I feel honored and inspired
standing right here right now there is a
new aam freed song called Bring the
house
down it is a popular saying but he is
referring to our ability to bring down
our Temple the future of the Jewish
people we are building it Brick by Brick
with the mitzvos kind Deeds that we do
and what greater unifying Mitzvah can we
do than Bea the Mitzvah best performed
by a woman if you knew that you had a
direct number to God wouldn't you use it
God gave us a beautiful opportunity to
connect with him when we bake kala the
Gates of Heaven open all we have to do
is
call God is waiting at this time to hear
our
prayers especially since by baking kalas
and Performing the Mitzvah of separating
kala with our whole heart we pray that
God repay us with similar compassion we
pray that he protects us from ever
having to feel sorrow or pain it is
during this time of extreme closeness to
God that we give charity when we give to
others we are really giving to ourselves
by channeling
generosity our mother SAR baked bread
that stayed fresh all week this miracle
happened because sorah was able to
recognize the life force the presence of
God even in something as ordinary as
bread she understood that bread gives us
life but it is up to us to give our
lives meaning it is women specifically
who have this Mitzvah because we are the
the ones who give life we want to make
this world better we want the sick to
heal people to find their mates
Tranquility in our home peace in Israel
peace in the unit United States success
in our
livelihoods when we make kala it is very
easy to become proud of what we have
accomplished but we must remember that
our success comes from God that is why
we separate a peace and make a blessing
we are symbolically recognizing that
God's blessing is in everything that we
do Isn't it nice to know the power we
have in each of us whether young or
old and then sometimes we have an HP or
hashak pratis moment where you feel that
God is winking at
you it's a moments of clarity where we
see and understand that our lives have
meaning and importance and that nothing
that happens is m
coincidence I was looking for one such
moment that I could use to help others
see what I know to be true about Unity
who we are and what we do I know that
they are all around us many times right
after I think about someone or in a
positive way talk about someone I
actually bump into that someone on such
occasions I started to use the phrase if
I knew what I would have what I said
would actually have come true I would
have asked for a million dollars so I
was looking for a story and then it
happened I told my father over the
holidays that I needed to bump into
rabie pesak cron for those of you who
have never heard of him he is a master
Storyteller he uses amazing HP or Hask
prus stories to teach people valuable
lessons
I felt that he would be able to provide
me with the necessary inspirational
story well truthfully I didn't bump into
Rabbi pesak cron but in my home my
father is a master Storyteller and not
to disappoint my father proceeded to
relate to me an amazing HP story that
will blow your minds on the unifying
power that we have this event actually
occurred to my nephew
this past summer my dear nephew Moshe is
a religious rabinal student who is also
in college Premed it happened that he
heard about a prestigious internship
being offered to a few select students
over the summer in the University of
Chicago hospital he worked hard and he
was selected as one of the interns who
would have the amazing opportunity to
learn from Top Doctors in many different
fields of Medicine he spent his summer
days at the hospital making rounds in ER
rooms and operating rooms and then one
day the interns were having a
conversation amongst themselves they
turned to my
nephew and they asked him we don't
understand how is it possible that you
know so many people so many doctors and
Hospital workers they approach you they
speak to you they are concerned about
your whereabouts how is it possible
please explain to us this
phenomenon my nephew looked at them for
a
moment and then he pointed to his head
he said it is what I wear on my head
that signifies to these doctors that I
am a Jew just like them my keeper
unifies us and if we don't have each
other's backs
then who
will women tonight we have that power
when we bake together we are connecting
as one we are strengthening our bonds
and to facilitate this amazing Goodwill
from tonight I ask each of you to take a
coin from the bowl and put it into the
pink charity box on your table everyone
every table has a pink charity box and
some
quarters it will help people who are
needy in truth giving charity helps you
because you are fostering your own sense
of
compassion all right when you're done
with that ladies it's time to put on
your gloves and take it away
hanal
okay we're going to move the table
f
good evening
ladies thank you again for having me I'm
so so happy to be here oh wow okay is
this loud enough Connie asked me to talk
louder last year I didn't speak loud
enough okay first of all everybody if
you haven't yet take out your plastic
gloves from your apron and put it on H
I'm not so happy with these aprons they
really make me look fat but
okay okay in the second pocket of your
apron there are these uh plastic bags
they're going to be uh used for covering
our dough and they're going to be used
later to take home your Hala correct
fantastic okay I'm going to put on my
gloves I'm going to take all my
ingredients out of the bowl because this
is the bowl we're going to be using for
mixing
okay ladies the first ingredient we're
going to be putting into the bowl is the
water this is not the drinking water
that we have which I of course drank up
and had to refill with my drinking water
it's this little bowl it's this little
bottle of water that has the ingredients
on it and water represents the
Torah just as we cannot live without
water we cannot live without Torah so
this is our first ingredient young
ladies we're going to pour it into our
Bowl okay the next
ingredient okay kala coaches I hope that
you're around to help everybody who
doesn't know exactly what has to be done
but we first put the water into the bowl
now after we put the water into the bowl
we're going to locate our yeast
everybody the yeast is the little
container that has the Y on top of it
why okay yeast is the the
ingredient that enables our dough to
rise we're going to take the yeast and
we're going to drizzle it into the
bowl and it's going to it's going to
you'll see that it covers the top of the
bowl East represents growth and expans
ion and just as the yeast is going to
allow our dough to
rise so too we hope that with the baking
of the kala and with all the special
things that we do over here we're able
to reach our special
potential each person should be able to
reach their special potential with
baking kala and with doing these special
things after we put in the
yeast we're going to
we can mix it around a little
bit now we're going to add the sugar
into the bowl because the sugar is going
to mix with the yeast and the water and
it allows the the um the yeast to bubble
and it's going to help it to to allow
the the flour to rise afterwards when we
mix everything together sugar is the
sweet part our of
oural and the sugar represents
everything that's sweet in our lives so
we're going to drizzle the sugar
in and now after we drizzle the sugar in
we're going to mix it around and we have
to wait a minute or
two so while we wait a minute or two I
just want to uh tell every
body something special because that's
what I'm here for as everybody knows I'm
the Hala fairy and I have a business in
New City and besides for having a
business in New City I sell my kalus in
25 to 30 different supermarkets all over
New York and New Jersey and Connecticut
and we Supply hollas to about 15 schools
every week before Shabbat but besides
for that I also give many Hala class
classes Hala bacon classes I give I give
Bat Mitzvah classes I give Halas in uh
in temples and synagogues I give H
classes to many different kinds of
people and something that I became very
um passionate about
is if anybody didn't get yeast please um
get your Runners to help you find the
yeast because the yeast is well going to
make our dough
rise okay please make sure yeast is a
very important
ingredient raise your flag raise your
flag and we'll find you
yeast but I always tell everybody I say
no matter what kind of people what kind
of uh religious status you have lighting
candles on Friday night is one of the
amazing mitzvot that women have and I
always tell people even if you're not if
you're not religious if you're not Sher
shab shower shabas if you go out on
Friday night which we hope people don't
but there are people who
do if you like C if you light candles on
your dining room table you're bringing
shabas into your home the lights of the
candles is something amazing and women
have a special special opportunity on
Friday night every week Friday night
when I light my candles I always after I
make the braa I always thank Hashem for
the previous week because no matter what
what kind of challenges we go through
and none of us have perfect lives none
of us have perfect children but I always
thank Hashem for the previous week and
all for all the beautiful things that I
have in my life in fact last week I
wasn't it was after a very very busy Yan
offf season we were I was back in my
bakery every two days baking and
supplying the supermarkets with the
kalus again and Yan was over and I was
completely and totally exhausted and I
didn't know what to do with myself so
what did Hashem do he made me sick and
as strange as it sounds I was in bed for
five days with the flu and before I lit
candles last Friday night I actually
thanked Hashem because there was no way
on my own that I was going to take any
time off but I was exhausted and I
needed to sleep and I stayed home for
five days and the people who worked for
me told me I cannot come back until I
feel completely better and so I was able
to really uh uh recover and barem I'm
here for this fantastic halake event
which if it would have happened this
week it would have been terrible
happened last week so it was amazing so
we have to be extremely thankful for
everything and after I thank Hashem for
my week then I can ask Hashem for
anything I want and I always are am able
to feel good about it and now that the
now that the yeast is bubbling a little
bit we're ready to uh start going with
the next
ingredients everybody has one egg we're
going to uh crack open the egg into this
bowl over here and we're going to make
sure that there's no
uh it's going to make sure that there's
no blood drops in
here beautiful stunning New York eggs
fantastic okay it looks beautiful we're
going to put it into the bowl mix it
around a little bit give up a little
mix give it a little mix over here we
have spoons for this purpose everyone's
going to give it a little mix and eggs
represent the renewal of the life
cycle as eggs hatch not these I hope but
as eggs hatch we hope that we have nice
things in our lives that are going to
hatch and make our lives always more
pleasant and next ingredients the next
ingredient we're going to put in is the
oil everyone has a little container here
with
oil we're going to take the oil o loud
we're going to take the oil and pour it
in gently and mix it around
again you can put all your containers
one into the other so that you don't
make too much of a mess on your table
and the space for all the
workings okay so we added the oil
oil represents the anointing oil was
used to anoint our Kings and when we add
oil we're anointing each of our loved
ones and we can pray for them and we can
ask Hashem for all the different things
that we
need okay oil we did the sugar already
now we're going to add the
salt everyone take your salt salt little
thing with the S on it stands for salt
and we're going to mix it around also
and now comes my favorite
part my favorite favorite part is where
we add the
flour this this represents flour flour
is the most important ingredients in
oura
oh you can rip open the back or you can
uh tear it open or you can do whatever
you want just open it flower represents
the sustenance in our lives and we hope
that when we make Hala that Hashem
provides us with the sustenance that we
need in order to be better people in
order to live our lives and have
whatever we need so that we can service
and serve
Hashem with all our love okay I'm going
to take the the the flower Now ladies I
I know it's a little bit crowded over
here but if you stand up after you put
the flow in and you mix it it's much
easier if you do it when you're standing
but I don't want to cause any uh Ruckus
over
here
so I would say that we are given just
enough flour so I would tell everybody
to put all their flour into the
bowl and at the beginning when you mix
around the
dough you're going to use the uh the
wooden spoon to mix it but as it gets
thick then you're going to use your
henties wow I would tell everybody to
put their garbage in here this is like
fantastic for the garbage I'm such a
genius by the way I just want to let
everybody know that t Mandel who I call
Han grossburger Mandel was my classmate
and in two years hasm after I'm here for
another two years of course we will we
will be celebrating our 40th
anniversary of our graduation from high
school which is so incredibly shocking
that I can't believe it I mean I I don't
look like I graduated 40 years ago from
high school H do you look like you
graduated 40 years ago from high school
that's crazy crazy
right
um I you truthfully I only use dry yeast
I used to use wet yeast in my
store and wet yeast if you don't buy it
at the right time it ferment it ferments
and it doesn't have a really nice smell
so I only use dry yeast now and over
Yanti we were barem so so busy and I
used to get um we used to bring in um
pallets of 2,000 pounds of flour at a
time and um it was a very exciting y of
season for me and I'm going to be very
honest with everybody Hala baking as a
business is not really all about the
money it's about sitting at home Friday
night or sitting home on Yanti in the
Suka and thinking to yourself about how
many thousands of homes you make Yanti
and chabis special in where people
celebrate Yanti because of you and their
celebration is so incredible
so I have been so blessed and I feel
like such an
incredible High every week when shabus
comes
around okay now I'm going to mix it by
hand oh and the H when the holidays come
around when the holidays of course of
course if anybody has so much fun
tonight that they want to do this again
tomorrow night I'm going to be doing a
Halala bacon class tomorrow night at the
park at the park e synagogue in New York
City and I'm sure that they would be
happy to have
you so uh you know just
saying wow the dough is really really
nice I'm very very happy with
it very happy with it
last year I gave hakara to because she
gave me my whole wheed kala recipe this
year I don't really have a hakara said
to to her only that she's my friend and
friendships that last so many years are
just
amazing right
H was that
silly
I'm sure that everybody's almost
finished kneading their
dough very dry add a drop of water of
course or if you have a drop of oil if
your if your ye if your dough is very
dry add a drop of oil from your little
Bowl if you have any left and put it on
your hands and shmear it on your hands
together and put it around your dough it
it will help it to moisten it a little
bit so that you don't have to add extra
ingredients wow this came out really
really
nice Connie last year we made one medium
or two small
Halas did we make one medium last year
or two
also of course for shabas you need to
have two kalas it's like the uh the the
double halot that they had in the uh in
the
temple
thank you so much for coming Kuda thank
you thank
you okay ladies when we're done now
we're going to cover the
Hala with our plastic
bag
after we cover it with the plastic bag
you know what if anybody has their
little oil things again I don't know why
I keep coming back to the oil put a
little oil on your hand and just smear
it on top of the dab it on top of your
your um your dough
and
now oh we're covering with the napkin
fantastic oh first we're going to cover
it with the bag everybody girls young
ladies we're going to cover it with the
bag and then with and then we're going
to cover it with the
napkin with the napkin that's on the
table
fantastic it's fine that I don't have a
a a napkin everybody will pretend that I
do and they will all
understand came up really nice I'm
pretty
impressed if if you would like to while
you're now finishing up you could share
with the people at the table something
special of your wishes with this in this
special group over here
some of your special wishes if you have
somebody who uh needs a special healing
if you have someone in your family who
needs to find the right person in their
lives to spend the rest of their lives
with we have so many things that we can
ask Hashem for today and this is our
time
still needing still
needing
well we're not taking kala yet we're not
taking no no no after after we are done
when right before we right before we
braid our hollas we're going to ask that
every single person at their table is
going to take a very small piece
off if they want to they could do it now
and then what should they do with
it there's a Bowl on your table if
everybody would like to they could take
a little piece of their dough off right
now a tiny piece and put it into that
bowl and then we're going to take all
the little pieces and we're going to
make a a Hala of unity which is a Hala
that everybody over here is a part of
which is so
incredible are you kidding me this is
what should look like this looks like
Hala from all the whole table so it's
not like a really big piece but this is
from everyone on the table kala so
almost like the size of a uh of an
olive not a big Olive a small
Olive and the runners could please
gather these little bowls together and
and just bring them up you don't have to
touch the dough just bring it up so that
we could uh make sure that the dough
stays as clean as possible
oh thank you sweetie oh my gosh that's
amazing this is amazing look at this
these are all little pieces very
generous table over here fantastic oh
that's
[Music]
fantastic fantastic look at this this
little pieces big pieces
fantastic super
fantastic girls we're doing so well wow
this is a really generous
table oh my gosh that's fantastic thank
you oh my gosh this is
amazing a Hala of
unity I see here a lot of young girls
here that I didn't see last year right
we have a lot of young girls here to
tonight last year was a different kind
of crowd I'm I'm really happy with what
I see and by the way if anyone decides
that they want to start bakon kala at
home and they have any
questions and have any questions anybody
can call me anytime at the Hala faery
ask for hanell I will answer any
questions anytime I'm really very good
about
that oh
don't I don't know who that was applause
was for so I have a bunch of uh bows
going on here this is like really a lot
of
fun oh fantastic okay okay my job is
done for now we'll come back later we
a oh everybody look at the screen shimmy
Adar is going to be on the screen now

attention for a few
moments when I was a little girl I used
to watch my mother light her shabas
candle and I would always wonder they
would be one
Candlestick one Li one candleabra that
stood all by
itself stood
alone and I used to wonder
why was this Candlestick standing all by
itself one Friday night my mother told
me the story of her shabus Candlestick
that I'm holding in my hands
tonight and she told me that the Winds
of War were blowing over
Hungary my great
grandfather harav Rabbi y Hali Young Who
was the Chief Rabbi of a city called
nadur in
Hungary went out in middle of the night
together with his wife my bubby
rabbitson
Slava and in middle of the night they
dug a hole deep into the Earth in the
courtyard of their synagogue they took
their
candlesticks they took their Kish cups
they took the Torah crowns they took
minoras and in the dark of the night
they buried all their
Juda soon afterwards they were taken
away to
owitz they were never seen or heard from
again my Zade my bubby they were taken
holding their grandchildren and their
great grandchildren in their arms
babies they would never
they would never heard from my mother
was just a little girl she was taken to
Beren Bon together with her two brothers
and my
grandparents somehow somehow through the
grace of God my mother
survived she came to this country just a
little girl but they were broken before
the war there were over
85 rabbis
with the last name Young and they all
perished their families were
gone there was one man one man went back
to the city of
Nadar one man who had been in the
congregation of
madii he went back to see what he would
find there was nothing the Nazis had
come with their German Shepherd dogs
they dug up and they found all the
silver there was no one
left but one candelabra my
Bubbies he vowed and he made a promise I
will not rest I will not sleep until I
find a grandchild who survived there was
a knock at the
door my Z my grandfather opened the door
and he wept when this man said I am
bringing you the
Candelabra of your mother the Bubba
slana I'm holding this calabra in my
hand myi took his children around and he
said my precious
lights this candelabra has come
home God Hashem has sent us a message
that even in the
darkness we have a mission and our
mission is to bring the light of chabus
into this world never give up
hope bring the light of shabas into this
world when I was born my mother gave me
the name Slava KH or my bubby who liit

candelabra all my life every Friday
night I would watch my mother cover her
eyes and Kindle the light of this shabas
candle a few weeks ago my mother
returned her soul to the heavens above
she touched thousands of people in this
world bringing the Jewish people
home and now this shabas Candlestick is
in my home and every Friday night I have
the privilege of lighting my Bubby's L

okay um that was very beautiful thank
you ladies it was very very beautiful
and very
touching
okay so I I just need a little bit of
quiet Lanna are you here
Lanna okay bring her up to the stage
please we would like to give the honor
of separating the dough this
year of making the blessing the Braha on
the dough to a very special woman Lanna
Alvarez last year we had the privilege
of having Mrs mirowitz a holocaust
Survivor for this part of the program
and this year we have lyanna who was a
survivor in her own right two years
ago we were on a j Inspire JW RP trip to
Israel with wonderful Brooklyn Ladies a
lot of whom are here
tonight on the last day of that
trip lyanna was faced with a life
altering
challenge she was walking behind the
coach bus it slid backwards and she was
crushed underneath the wheel of the
standing at her bedside the next day in
the ICU of anaram Hospital hadasa anaram
in Jerusalem I looked at her and I just
couldn't believe it there was our
beautiful vibrant lyanna who got up
every morning early before our trips to
go jogging who sat at the edge of her
seat listening to the lecturers drinking
it in
I saw her mind and soul open up to the
beauty of her Jewish Heritage over that
week and here she was lying there
intubated and
unresponsible we
cried we prayed and we prayed some
more and then after many surgeries and
many months later rehab with her husband
at her side
Lanna was finally able to come home to
her
children when she was home she began
instilling Jewish values into her life
and into the lives of her
Lov thank you
lyanna thank you for being a ro model
for all of us here
tonight you to demonstrate how one takes
one's Jewish
identity and Embraces it through thick
and thin and not just when it's easy
because that's easy but when we're
struggling and we're going through
difficulties thank
you good evening
everybody so nice to see you all here
thank you honey for you for introducing
me for your kind words you really
touched me um thank you everyone for
being here I am so honored and humbled
by it this is this is a great
honor so I'll just be very quick I was
raised in a secular home um and I knew
nothing about Judaism except for the
fact or anything to be um what it is to
be
Jewish all I knew that the Jewish people
were the most hated nation in the world
that's it
um I remember hiding the fact that I was
Jewish growing up um I married a
non-jewish man and have two wonderful
children from this marriage I had a
great career everything a woman should
can want or need but I wasn't happy
during the trip sponsored by JW Europe
and our own J Inspire thank you so
much um I learned so much about my
heritage about Judaism the lectures that
I heard the sights I
seen we were absolutely breathtaking I
fell in love with Israel with
Jerusalem I remember thinking to myself
this is it this is what I'd been
searching for I was excited about
Shabbat and couldn't wait to come home
and and share it with my
family but God had other
plans when I woke up in the hospital I
remember seeing shalam where is shalam
shalam oh she's right here she was
crying as she is right
now and I couldn't understand why she
was crying I felt so at
peace yes there was pain that
excruciating pain that I could feel
through all these painkillers but my
mind my heart were at
peace I felt that
presence um Hashem was with me I felt
like I was being taken care of by him I
felt that I wasn't going through this
alone I felt loved although I was in and
out of anesthesia a lot during the my
the hospital I remember having about
four to five groups of people come and
visit me no they weren't people that I
knew I didn't know many people in
Israel they were just fellow Jews who
had heard about my accident and just
wanted to be there for me out of solidar
I had locals tourists Russians
Australians British just to come and cry
with me laugh with me it was amazing and
I remember thinking to myself how could
it be the most hated nation in the
world I couldn't believe the unity of
the Jewish
people when when one is hurt the rest
are suffering for the first time in my
life life I felt proud I felt proud to
be Jewish I felt proud to be part of
this wonderful Nation I couldn't have
done it without my wonderful sisters at
Janes fire my city lead leaders shami
Mara TI ety and of course H Hy I'm sorry
Sor all of you
girls and of course my mother my
wonderful beautiful mother who's sitting
right over here
here and my sisters from the trip I love
you
girls they're
wonderful and thank you for your
support now both of my kids are getting
strong education at Sinai Academy and
shal shell is B Yakov I know some of you
are
here shout out to sh shot
girls um I'd like to share with you
something that I had I heard at a
convention once a holocaust Survivor was
telling her story and said I'm
paraphrasing I would give everything I
have for this atrocity the Holocaust to
never happen again but the lessons I've
learned and the people I've met I
wouldn't give up for the world I don't
want to compare my experience to a
holocaust that's not what it is about
but similarly I feel I feel that the
lessons I've learned and the people I
met during this difficult time are
invaluable
okay before lyanna makes the braa the
blessing we're going to take you can
stand if you're standing it's fine we're
going to take 60
Seconds know what Jimmy spoke about
we're going to take 60 seconds to create
to connect to our creator to pray for
whatever it is we need in our lives and
the lives of our loved ones I want
everyone to take this moment there is an
unbelievable energy and power in 60
seconds of silence and 60 seconds of
Silent prayer with 1,00 women in one
space so use the moment well close your
eyes we're going to start right
now

in Hebrew and then in English so wait

what are you looking at nothing four
tablespoons of oil you seem a little
confused do I look confused no put the
two eggs right in and then you fold it
adds a little crunch to it I think we're
supposed to use eight cups of
flour what did I right I put in8 cups of
flour no that's four
cups uh whatever I don't have any more
flour it doesn't even matter I really
think you should go get flour you were
supposed to bring the ingredients I did
bring the ingredients okay but it was a
small bag of flour I didn't realize you
need eight cups you're getting too
technical about it so now you just leave
the dough to rise you cover it with like
a wet
shata
finally just like punch it
down now you're ready to start braiding
you take the first one you go over here
and then you go this and you go like
this that's not how you braid bottom
this looks like a braid once it's baked
they all look the same tuck it like
this and there you have your perfect H
coat the top with with a layer of egg
and smush it around transfer the kalala
over to the silver
foil start I mean whatever just delay
start it's fine just do bake here
convection roast um no clear up okay
have you ever used this before yeah I
used this last week I use it every week
400 minutes to match the the temperature
you always want to match the temperature
with the time so if you're baking it at
350 you bake it for 350 minutes if
you're baking it at 400 you bake it for
400 minutes start what do I do for 400
[Music]
minutes oh hello why is the fire alarm
going off it's fine it doesn't matter
it's okay hey the look at it it's not
burning it's not burning it's just
smoking a little should have gone to the
Jal no idea what I'm doing take your
kala out of the oven 400 minutes are up
you made it this far and now you're
ready to see your final
product see look how nice it came out I
told you it was going to be
[Music]
perfect
[Music]
okay ladies now we're ready to grade our
H I just want to let you know that the
video that you just saw the first one
soon by you it's a really really cute
show it has three segments and the first
one is 15 minutes each of the other ones
are a half hour they're really really
entertaining and clean fun and in
segment number three we feature the
Halala fairy kalas just to let you know
so you'll see them on the video on the
show if you if you watch it okay ready
that was really cute both of those
videos were really adorable okay we're
going to take our dough now out of the
bowl and we're going to um split it in
half cut it in half because we're going
to be making two
small medium small call them whatever
you like this is our Unity kala for all
those people who didn't see it doesn't
look
amazing I'm sure it tastes even better
and don't forget about the earring hello
anybody who lost their earring I really
would like not to have to take it home
with me even though it's sort of pretty
I don't really wear hoop earrings I
don't really wear
earrings okay ladies we're going to take
each of our we're going to do work with
one with one uh piece of dough at a
time so I taught you guys last year this
special fairy trick and I'm going to
teach it to all those who were not here
last year we're going to learn it again
so I took my whole entire Dough because
I want everyone to be able to see it and
I um I cut it into I cut it into six
pieces but instead of cutting it through
and having to pinch the tops I just cut
it almost all the way to the Tippi as
top and I left it connected by the top
so you don't have to pinch the
tops now if you're if you're baking at
home and you see that your Hala is a
little bit sticky when you take it out
of the pan out of the bowl after it's
risen try not to add flour to it because
then it makes it clumpy and lumpy and it
doesn't rise nicely add a little bit of
oil to the palm of your hand and shmear
it on the dough a little bit it'll make
it so much easier to work
with so here we have our dough that's
divided into
six see that and you see how it's all
attached at the top I'm not doing
anything yet because I want everyone to
have the opportunity to work with me at
the same
time if anybody needs help the uh
Runners are around holding their
flags and holding more
dough do you feel like the dough lady
honey not like the bag lady the dough
lady oh I'm watching everybody I'm
seeing some really nice
uh lessons being learned over
here so before I uh used to teach
classes and kala baking I didn't really
know how to teach them because uh I just
knew how to break kala I didn't really
know exactly how to explain it and then
when KH invited me to come and bra kala
she taught me the easy way which is two
over two over everything and then the
first over two second over everything
first over
two so I'm thinking that most people are
ready to start braiding we're not ready
to start
braiding second Over All first over two
of course it's not second over two it's
second over all first over two switch
sides of
course so I think I'm going to start
braiding my Hala and then if I need to
make another sample we'll take a little
piece of the unity Hollow we'll braid it
and then we'll place it on top
again
so if everybody's ready we're going to
start braiding our holl now if you want
to braid your holler in a different way
please go ahead and do so nothing's
written in stone over here or nothing's
written in
D okay and I'm going to hold this over
here and see if I could do everything at
the same
time so the second
overall
um I guess I'm not on the screen all
first over two switch sides of course of
course but I'm not on the screen so it
doesn't I'm not on the screen I'm a
little bit
insulted oh you're putting me on the
screen now
fantastic fantastic you're super you're
a super photographer super super
photographer oh here we go so we're
going to do it like this oh being that
you're doing such a great job here okay
we're going to do second
overall oh thank so
special
thank you so much thank you okay
so yeah so we're going to do second
overall oh perfect thank you so much
perfect and then we're going to take the
first one and we're going to do it over
two and it's not going to look beautiful
because we're not here in the Privacy
our homes using our nice sharp serrated
knives but we're going to do the best
that we can and then after we just
worked with this side now we're
switching over to this side and we're
going to take again the second
overall and then we're going to do the
first over
two and then we're going to switch sides
again and you can always adjust your uh
braided uh pieces so that they uh you
know that they're not playing with each
other too much then we're going to go
again to this side and we're going to go
second
overall first over
two and then we're going to switch sides
again so we're always working first on
the right side and then on the left side
and we're going to do second
overall first over
two switch
sides so even though this one is going
to this side we're going to start
working with this side again and here we
go second overall first over two switch
sides second overall first over two
switch
sides second overall first over two
switch
sides second
overall I know it sounds repetitious but
got to get the job done first over two
switch sides second
overall first over two switch sides
second
overall first over two switch sides I'm
going to move this all back to the
middle of the
uh of the uh of the cutting board over
here or the working
board okay we're going to go here second
overall first over two switch
sides second
overall first over
two switch sides second
overall first over two now if you get
confused you can always basically
imagine Where You Are
now I'm going to finish it off once you
get the hang of these things it's really
easy to do it and if you're at home and
if you need to practice you can always
take six different per six six different
socks and you can take them and you can
pin them together at the top with a
safety pin and you could practice that
way it's a great way to practice and
you'll see that you're not making a
mistake because of the way it weaves
itself and then we tuck it inide
underneath and we cetch it together and
we have a super fantastic kala I mean
it's not the most beautiful kala but you
made it and that makes it
beautiful Now ladies I'm going to do
this once
more but I just want to give everyone
instructions on when you bring your Hala
home tonight your Dough because it's not
Hala yet it's just dough
when you bring your dough home tonight
if you want to bake it
tonight you're going to leave it in a
warm place for about an
hour and then you're going to bake it at
350 for about 35 to 45 minutes you'll
know when it's
done if you decide that you don't want
to bake your Hala
tonight oh the sprad there should be on
the
tables I think I think every other table
has a
spray by the way you don't really need
spray because it's going to come out
nicely after you bake it but
okay if you decide you don't want to
bake your Hala
tonight um my suggestion is you put your
dough in the
refrigerator until tomorrow night and
then tomorrow night take it out of the
fridge if you're going to work tomorrow
take it out of the fridge when you come
home home put it on the counter and let
it rise for an hour and then bake it at
350 as you would bake it
tonight by the way if you don't want to
bake your kala tonight or tomorrow night
you can go home you can take your
braided Hala that's in the pan and you
could put it into the
freezer which is a fantastic
idea you can put it into the freezer in
your pan but don't put it in the shop in
the bag in the freezer because then it's
might start Rising a little bit and then
it's going to stick to the bag and it's
going to be like a Band-Aid it's going
to make a big mess when you pull it off
put it in your freezer you can leave it
there as long as you need to please not
after PES and when you decide that you
want to have it for shabas take it out
of the freezer take it out of the
plastic bag put it into a warm place but
not on top of a preheated oven put into
a warm place for like two or three or
four hours and then when you see that
it's nicely risen and when you like
touch it it like snaps back at you then
you bake it the same way you would bake
it tonight at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes
and if anybody would like to post
pictures if anyone is on Facebook or uh
Instagram or anything like that we'd
love to see your finished
product
where are the
recipes oh in the swag bag that You' got
there are four amazing recipes whole
wheat water Hala regular Hala and I
don't remember what the other one is but
it's probably a good
one I'm sure it's a good one what could
be bad with Hala and don't forget young
girls when you make when you bring your
Hala home and you bake it it doesn't
matter how it comes out you made it
that's the special thing about kala
there's no such thing as a bad kala when
I go to people's houses for lunch on
chabas I love to try their kala because
it's just I always watch them the way
they slice it because everyone slices
Hala differently but I just love to eat
other people's
Hala and I'm a big big Hala fan I don't
know yeah we could braid one more of
course we
can
yes some people people if you found the
spray on your uh table spray your pan a
little bit it's really
nice um we're make one more Hala here
what did I do with my
knife okay miss you okay we're going to
do this once more for those
people I mean as far as I'm concerned
Hala is the most important part of any
chabas meal right most important part I
can't even imagine having chabas meal
without a good
kala so you see I'm going to take my
dough
here cut it in half and then I'm going
to separate it a little bit and then I'm
going to cut each piece into four into
three it's really so easy once you get
the hang of it and once you get the hang
of Hala baking it's really such a
special special mitzvah for women to
do and the bra of fresh kala is also as
people spoke about it so often tonight
it's just one of the special thing for
women for us women it's our special
time so here we have six little pieces
here you can make tiny little hollas you
can make big ones you can make
ceremonial hollas you can make somebody
oh hi
so we're going to do this again I'm
going to do it facing
me we're going to do again we're going
to do second
overall first over two switch
sides second overall first over two
switch
sides second
overall first over two switch sides now
if you decide that you want to bake a
Hala instead of making it with six to
make it with with
four instead of doing second overall
first over two you could do second
overall first over one switch
sides I don't we don't bake Hollow with
six braids in our store we only make it
with four because six is too time
consuming you could take that of course
six is too time consuming we make it
only with four and so instead of doing
second overall first over two we do
second overall first over one and then
we do again second overall first over
one switch
sides and the holla comes out really
pretty I'm G to put this on top of our
un I know I know it's a little bit
dwarfed by it but uh you
know she's ready for what I'm not giving
up this spot yet no I'm
kidding
did you're going to take these home and
make do you heard my instructions right
these are for you for our cameraman
that these are for you
okay you g know what to do with them or
you need instructions again you oh you
have the video okay so our fantastic
cameraman over here up front Mr uh
