everybody
love me because
hey good everybody welcome back to
beyond the seven uh live from Jerusalem
with Rabbi Aaron David posted where
we've been doing the beautiful series
Tomer dvora uh which is based on the 13
attributes of hashem's mercy and today
we're on lesson 11 in the series I
noticed a couple of you put no sound uh
that's because I I keep getting on on
Facebook a copyright claim on the music
even though I paid for a license
um they seem to only allow it on YouTube
and not on Facebook and uh you know uh
nonetheless so I played it the intro
without the volume uh just for today to
see if they're they're bot still tries
to hit it with a copyright infringement
without any sound so yeah it's just
method to my madness but uh I am
thoroughly enjoying this series I
encourage everybody out there if you
haven't caught them all go all the way
back to one we've been doing them every
two or three weeks uh Rabbi Poston stays
up very late in Jerusalem I mean their
10 hour time difference from me and it's
uh like 11 30 p.m there in Jerusalem and
so
um it's uh
a joy that he takes the time out of his
very very busy schedule to share the
beauty of Torah with us especially on
such sensitive topics for Noah Heights
that are beyond the seven and I'm just
so enjoying everything he shares and
everything that yubinay his organization
there in Jerusalem uh shares online just
beautiful stuff I encourage everybody to
support them uh because they do factual
actual work there and then some so uh I
don't want to go on and on let's tune
right in and see how the rabbi's doing
today Shalom Rabbi Poston your beard is
getting quite large sir
I don't know what happened I just can't
stop it from growing every morning I
wake up and it's another millimeter
longer what can you do oh well you're
tempting me to grow one myself
yeah well this and that yeah you know
the world's confused who's a male and
who's a female these days so uh I'm
doing my part that's all I can tell you
um anyway I'm glad to be back and
shavuoto to everyone who's uh out of
Shabbat already and those who will be
watching this later and
Shalom alaikum everybody welcome welcome
back
and so tonight yeah we're talking about
media number 11. kindness to avraham
which is absolutely fascinating I just
want to reiterate some the reason why
we're doing this particular series
you know it's called beyond the seven is
really the original concept
behind I think we started a few years
ago
I began this series by discussing
different opinions the seven nokai logs
are not seven laws but seven principles
and that our subcategories number one
and number two there's even an argument
are they really
33 laws or 60 plus laws or maybe even
hundreds and
um you know there are opinions not my
opinion but Robina Nissan for example
likes anything right everything every
Mitzvah that's logical or ethical
is obligatory now when I say obligatory
it doesn't mean you're obligated and
nanjo is obligated in every detail the
way a Jew would be but things that have
to do with kindness things that have to
do with working on your character
there's no question that you know it's
you don't have to fix the world you just
have to there's room for improvement on
ourselves for sure that's right that's
right
so I think I just mentioned this you
know because we're getting into this
concept called kindness to avraham what
does it mean and how can it possibly a
pie apply to a non-jew to a Benoit a
righteous Gentile by the way I just want
to mention we had a beautiful couple for
Shabbos uh the name Noah from the
Netherlands and I'll tell you it was a
little I think it was beautiful but one
comment that the the man said he says Ah
we're just we're just slowly guarding me
and I'm like what are you talking about
you are the Elite of the elites right
you know the rom-bomb says that a
non-jew a Ben Noah who's dedicated
themselves to Torah meaning their Torah
and perhaps Beyond right things that
apply to them
they are like the Cohen gado that means
the high priest
holy of holies this is not uh to be the
belittled
um so with that in mind that's the
rambam not me and I believe it I trust
it and nevertheless the idea of these 13
attributes of Mercy even though they are
spoken about I'm not going to say in
great detail but it's spoken about right
after the aftermath of the golden calf
in Exodus chapter 33 when Moses wants to
know you know that he has God Show Me
Your Glory I want to know basically why
bad things happen to good people right
what is the media what are the character
traits of the almighty I'm interested I
want to know everything
and so
I know I'm saying things that people
probably already know anybody watching
this when it comes to the profits
there's nothing new they're only there
to guide us they're there to rebuke us
they're there to literally guide us in
what we're supposed to already know but
we're not doing
so in in malach in Mika chapter 7 is
really these 13 attributes that we're
discussing in this book the tummy
devorah which is over my left shoulder
which I'll just move this a little bit
there you go and um
they're worded a little bit differently
but basically it's an explanation of the
original 13 attributes of Mercy which we
were handed to by from God to Moses and
Moses to us till this very day
so even though we discussed last week
Titan Emma sliakov to give truth Yakov
and there's this aspect of treating
people according to the letter of the
law and even having Mercy on them
knowing that they're only following the
letter of the law
this topic tonight is called beyond the
letter of the law going beyond the
letter of the law with people who
whether they deserve it or not
obviously if they deserve it it's
probably easier to deal with them right
if they're full of hasid and kindness
you you probably are inclined to want to
act that way towards them
but again one of the main principles of
these 13 attributes of Mercy according
to Tommy davara is that when you act
in the way that God acts in other words
God commanded us to imitate him it's one
of the 613 Commandments but it's logical
right
you open the spigot you open a Heavenly
flow of kindness from Hashem by acting
in these merciful ways which is I'm
going to say it's Indescribable
undescribable how do you you know we
hardly understand Hashem except through
what we see in the Torah and maybe
through nature
but this is an instruction manual the
Torah itself is an instruction manual
and we have an oral Torah and it
describes us what these 13 attributes
are and tonight drum roll please we are
discussing kindness to avraham and the
the way the um the book is set up that
I'm reading from it's a very short
paragraph however as you know we go into
into sources and we discussion and that
will be most of the discussion not
necessarily what he himself had written
and it's so short I mean it's really two
very uh succinct paragraphs
I want to kind of spend very little time
on it and I want to spend more time
discussing it in detail
so he begins by saying
regarding this report
now there are those who go beyond the
boundaries of their obligation this is
key in what we're discussing with the
seven beyond the seven because there are
seven hardcore principles that are 100
obligated with so many details and then
there are going to be things that are
we're going to say it's you're not
really obligated
but you're it's it's
um praiseworthy
I just remember somebody on on Facebook
asked
um is it permissible or obligatory for a
non-jew to give an interest-free loan to
another Benoit
now
there's a lot to say on that subject but
somebody just piped in and said and with
a lot of authority apparently said no
I said what do you mean no that's the
answer it's really just no maybe the
right meaning in terms of an obligatory
uh interest-free loan to another but
it's so amazing because when I first
heard this subject that a Jew is
forbidden to give an interest-free loan
as I'm sorry forgetting forbidden to
give a loan on interest can only give an
interest free loan to another Jew
okay that's very nice but what about
nanjos why can't we give nanjos we're
not supposed to give non-jews
interest-free loans
and I'm thinking well that's a little
bit you know as a beginner in learning
I'm thinking that's a little bit awkward
aren't we supposed to be the like to the
Nations aren't we supposed to teach them
how to treat each other wouldn't it be
you know if they picked up the lesson I
mean whatever it is I mean how are they
going to learn if we don't give them
interest-free loans right guess what
it's actually so much of the Taurus
counter-intuitive
so if we don't give them interest-free
loans which is like you know it's a hard
pill to swallow this is really the only
way they will learn to give
interest-free loans
what does that mean in other words if
it's known that the Jews give
interest-free loans so then when a
non-jew needs a loan they'll just go to
the Jew
and when the another Ben naught comes to
him and says you know I can you give me
a interest-free loan he's going to say
what are you kidding me go to the Jews
right but when the Jew is restricted in
their kindness or some in other words
they have to be kind but there's like a
little restriction take care of each
other this is so well known throughout
the world everyone knows the Jews take
care of each other right I mean
obviously we're not the only ones
because other people have found have
have known about this whether you're a
Japanese immigrant United States or an
Indian immigrant United States whatever
it is you hear these beautiful stories
maybe Italians whatever I don't want to
cut anybody out right there's so many
groups ethnic groups that have learned
this actual important lesson so in a
certain sense by restricting and saying
no don't give the non-jew the
interest-free loan this will actually
force them to give loans to each other
now obviously if somebody is looking for
a like a liquid million dollars just so
that they could uh expand their business
that you can go into business with them
you don't have to uh you know and make
make some money on that you don't need
to
um give an interest-free loan but
someone who is looking to buy a good
fishing rod so they can put fresh fish
on their table right so then for sure I
mean actually maybe maybe even give it a
sudaka but for sure the the fact that
you will not charge them interest you're
helping them you're putting food on the
table the reward is just unbelievable
okay I think I made my I hope I made my
point
Rabbi can I ask you a question because I
brought this up uh and haven't got an
answer uh back uh from another Rabbi on
on the question of kindness
my I have a personal difficulty with
expectation I think that you know
kindness in order to stay kind it has to
be a choice a personal Act of the will
to give and when people expect something
um they're in fact robbing you of that
choice right they expect it you've got
to do it it's it take it turns kindness
from being truly kind into a demand and
um sometimes demanding gets to be a
little too uh you know even pointing
towards slavery
I think that your question we will
discuss and take apart and put back
together
um because yes I believe that it still
will be a choice even if it's coming
from a not a good place uh demanding
um I I think that that will become clear
through this lesson
so we started by saying those who go
beyond the boundaries of their
obligation as did whom as did avrah
mavina we're going to bring several
examples sorry of avram himself
right now Hashem he's the one who also
treats them beyond the boundaries of the
law in other words lift name Assurance
means going Beyond not what they deserve
and not forget the expectations also
that would be like the letter of the law
we're talking about going Beyond so it's
the choice this is like a mental shift
that The Giver
could should maybe in certain
circumstances actually have
the next statement I'm going to read in
Hebrew
name right there are people that act
like this uh beyond the letter just like
Abraham Our Father
who this is the way Hashem acts
name he also acts this way
now Hashem does not exact from them the
full extent of his Justice even in the
correct way in other words if there is
Certain Justice
that should come if we act I know it
sounds crazy but we talked about this
how we can manipulate I don't like that
word but it's the only word I can think
of maybe you'll fill me in with another
it's but in a positive way we could
change the reaction the normal reaction
that would come from heaven
if we act lithium
Hashem will then respond lift name
Assurance which is probably what we all
want okay we don't want strict Justice
we wouldn't mind a little bit of Mercy
would we okay we want good good
turning spigoton to have this flow
he treats them even better than that as
they themselves behave okay this is a a
transformation and this is what the kind
of survivoram is referring to that acts
with Ben benevolence towards those who
are like avram in their behavior
so you don't have to be Jewish right
avram is all of our fathers right he's
the father of many nations whether you
want to say religions or nations he's
the monam he right that's what the Torah
describes him he is the father of many
nations of let's call it um
ethical monotheism right I mean that is
what a Ben noach is he's part of that
right that group uh he I'm gonna is he
or she has adopted has accepted the god
of Abraham Isaac and Jacob the god of
Israel right the Torah of Israel there's
no reason they shouldn't be connected to
this
thought pattern this behavioral pattern
the psychological pattern behind what
we're discussing tonight
and notorious chock full of stories okay
now when I say the Torah I'm not just
only referring to the written Torah we
have midrashi and we have the gamars
whatever it is within our oral Torah
that tells us about the amazing behavior
of our forefathers the great question
was asked if the first law of the Torah
is the you know getting ready for
Passover this should be the first months
to you right in Exodus and then you're
going to count 10 days then you're going
to take a shape and then you're going to
slaughter it and all the laws that have
to do with Passover why does the Torah
have to begin with Genesis
because there's so much to learn first
of all about God himself true right that
he's a creator of the world right and
that he ultimately chooses who's going
to live in Everest Israel in the land of
Israel who isn't I mean that's a very
important lesson I'm not dismissing that
lesson but one of the most important
lessons is how does how did our
forefathers behave they were very
righteous they were prophets they were
close to Hashem these are people we want
to emulate these people are going to
learn from and therefore the whole book
of Genesis is you know good and evil
people are righteous people are not and
it's an instruction manual
so the next paragraph says so too should
one act this is how we should act
he should be righteous correct and just
in his dealings with all people that's
true but
to go beyond the boundaries of the law
with those who are good in Pious so in
other words you are making a choice
maybe you want to treat everybody the
same
the truth is if there are people who are
good in Pious perhaps those are the
especially those you should go beyond
the blood of the law with
if he's slightly patient with other
people
with these meaning these who people who
are good and Pious he should be much
more so there's no question about that
he should have mercy on them and go
beyond the dictates of Justice with
which he acts towards others these
people should be very very esteemed and
beloved to him and be among his
companions now that is I basically it's
the translation of the Hebrew uh chapter
that we're dealing with
I have to say it's very
tightly packed and now we're going to
unpack the the words here
so
when we act with the special kindness
and consideration towards Those whom we
know to be especially kind and giving
and treat them with Greater Mercy
patience and forgiveness then we would
treat regular people
okay then we awaken this special Divine
Mercy
hashem's merciful attribute of kindness
to avraham bringing the element of Mercy
into the world
Hashem treated avram differently right I
hear these questions people have always
asked well before they found religion
right
are the Jews really the chosen people or
did God did avram choose God it's a
great question are we even treated
differently after you hear what has to
say there is because of this idea that
avram opened up the spigots right he
really did what we're going to call be
going beyond the letter of the law I
mean this is going to be the whole point
here
should a non-jew go beyond the letter of
the law
listen you have seven laws so if you
expounding you're very Pious within
those seven great
but you know what
I start off by telling you it's not just
seven or seven principles there's many
subcategories there are ethical issues
there are logical Concepts you can come
to on your own and yes it would be you
would get more reward you would be
treated differently by God
if you went beyond the seven beyond the
letter of the law this is my message
okay
so excellent
when people generally conduct their
dealings with other okay and just and
before I go on you know
whatever wisdom God imparted to the Jews
this is wisdom for the world again how
you deal with it you don't have to
follow it you know beyond the seven uh
as an obligation in every detail it's
the principles you learn the principles
and you apply them as you choose this is
when you started off by saying is it a
choice yes it's purely a choice for for
us some of it's not a choice
okay we don't have a choice to give well
live at a certain level for sure well
right industry low and we could uh enter
a business relationship if the person is
there to make money so then we could
legally there's a way to do it because
there's nothing wrong with going to
business with somebody okay therefore
it's basically I'm going to call it an
interest loan it's not really it's just
the interest is coming from a different
angle it's from the business
relationship as a partner but you could
do the same thing you can give
interest-free loans to your fellow
non-jews and you can give interest loans
to those who are just trying to make
more money they're not in desperate need
they just need some uh some fluidity and
some capitals and to make more money
okay anyway let's go on
so when B people generally conduct their
dealings with others by standards of
what is right and fair
but go beyond the dictates of fairness
when dealing with those who are
especially kind and good Hashem sees
this and likewise shows a special degree
of Mercy towards those who are
especially merciful
right this is a choice that you can make
and believe me everyone has a Yates of
hurray everybody
has an inclination to be stingy or not
to be cruel per se but just you know but
obviously to be cruel as well but you
know uh to be a little stingy to little
to be withholding you know we all have
that um a self-preservation right yeah
some people are downright defensive
we're going to see something amazing in
in other words when you examine Jewish
law as a non-jew and you see the beauty
the The Unbelievable
um not just wisdom but
you know
I don't even have words to express right
it's so it's like polished it's like
yeah
right it's like there's nothing more
meaningful in the world than looking at
something in Jewish law and dissecting
and understanding the principles behind
it
okay so we're gonna we're gonna take a
few examples of this
so when people are forgiving towards
others beyond the dictates of justice
and walk in the kind ways of avraham our
father Hashem acts towards them the same
way he forgives them who doesn't want
forgiveness from Hashem
foregoing the dictates of Justice beyond
what would be considered a fair response
this is the attribute of the kindness to
avraham through which Hashem deals with
a special kindness
towards those who walk in the ways of
avram just we already we all know right
God said to Abram
I will bless those who bless you I mean
you don't have to go further than that
right avraham was the epitome walking
example of kindness so he certainly
deserved blessings from others and when
anybody gives him a blessing or even to
a seed right so that's so simple you're
just opening up the spigot of
unbelievable kindness and mercy and
blessing from God
I mean really we could just close the
book here I mean understand how deep and
simple this is at the same time
so we're going to deal with a verse in
Proverbs King Solomon said in chapter 22
verse 9
we'll read the we have to read the
Hebrew as well
one with a good eye will be blessed
for his given his of his bread to the
poor
now the commentators explain this is
kind of like a response to a verse
previously in verse seven 22 verse 9. at
22 in Proverbs verse 9.
Tov I in who
right the one with the good eye iron
Toth Tov iron with a good eye it means
generous by the way
I don't know if that makes sense
that word we will have to dissect
because really what it sounds like it
says he will be blessed
true
it's because he gave his bread to the
poor
okay now it's it's kind of a response to
verse 7.
I don't know what you have you want to
read the English in verse 7.
sure verse 22 verse 7 of Proverbs says a
rich man will rule over the poor in a
borrower is a slave to the lender
okay so in Hebrew Usher
the Russian yimsho
so the rich man over you know whatever
he dominates the poor
the edit lovely
but what ends up happening is the debtor
the one who's borrowing the money
becomes a servant to the Creditor
now this is a very cruel way right tells
us when you give this money honestly you
should really we're giving it as a loan
don't just give it as a loan in your own
mind in your own heart don't expect it
back give it as Charity if you can't
afford to lose it don't mend it
if you have that in your mind yeah key
Point yeah the person cannot pay it back
what is in your heart are you holding a
grudge you're holding resentment are you
con don't act as a creditor you know
constantly call the guy up
listen this is on a personal level
obviously if you run a Gamache a bank or
whatever it is that is lending money
there are rules and it's it's you you
obviously have to act very differently
um but nevertheless on a personal level
you lend money especially interest-free
it's it's really charity and you have to
really look at it if I can't afford to
give it I mean literally give it away I
shouldn't lend it to him this person is
coming because he needs the money don't
don't don't be a right
okay I'll go with that
that I think has some negative
connotations uh I'm not mistaken
I couldn't be mistaken but there was uh
right this is a a Shakespeare
was that a Shakespeare uh story yeah I
think it was like going to back it to
that era but it's uh like a uh like a a
bookie or a uh somebody who's a uh uh
loans for a loan shark okay so maybe
people can put in the comments as far as
I know it was a uh was called something
anyway let's go on
um so the the Arts grow commentator
explains
one with a good eye will be blessed for
he has given of his bread to the poor a
person with a good eye shares his
possessions willingly
willingly and generously these two
concepts
and he rejoices in the success of his
fellow man without Envy
Rashi explains that this kind of person
he hates dishonesty
such a person will be blessed by his
grateful beneficiaries
by onlookers impressed with his
selfishness
and by Hashem Hashem is looking all the
time Hashem will be happy to bless him
because he knows that the more this
person has the more he will distribute
to the needy unbelievable right become a
clean become a vessel right why not I
mean whose money is it anyway it's all
gods
so you're basically he appointed you as
a distributor and if you're a
honest and ethical distributor of his
money he'll Grant you he'll trust you
with more
be a conduit not a yeah I'd rather The
Vessel
according to the Chevy this verse
response to verse 7 which describes the
dominance of the rich over the poor to
the contrary the poor man is actually
doing more for the rich man because the
wealthy benefactor which seems more
things in this world and reward in the
next
in other words
the poor person has given me an
opportunity
so why would I treat him with disrespect
I should be thanking him for the
opportunity
right that's an amazing concept
but what we're going to now deal with a
little bit is the last part
because he gave from his own bread from
his own bread to the poor
this person has eaten less
so he could share his food with the poor
so there's a maharsha explains that the
one with the good eye gives the poor man
bread of the same quality he himself
eats so he's giving from his own bread
which is very important because now
we're going to talk about
is some interesting ideas when it comes
to
the amount of bread
that a person that a Jew eats I don't
know if people are familiar with Grace
after meals this is a very interesting
idea I've seen non-jews do what they
call grace before meals
so they all hold hands or they just want
to bless hashems they're praying
thanking God for the meal we're about to
eat
our
Oro Torah tells us that's logical that
you don't need to be taught
because you're hungry you're about to
eat so of course you're going to thank
Hashem
the problem is after you've eaten then
you're satisfied it's easier to forget
the Lord your God and that's why the
toad was out of its way to tell us that
we make Grace after meals now I don't
know how many other religions do that I
have no idea
I'm going to assume
that not many mainly they do the grace
before meals which is totally fine I get
it
Okay so
since the Torah actually says
let me just get the verse here
it's in it's Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse
10. if you want to read it for us in
English
Deuteronomy 8 verse 10 says and you will
eat and be sated and you shall bless the
Lord your God for the good land he has
given you
first you eat obviously and then you are
satisfied I mean if you are satisfied
then you bless the Lord your God
so we have I don't know if you people
are aware of this in Judaism there are
measurements right
one would be obligated from the Torah to
bless God if they were satisfied on an
objective level
okay so there are measurements how much
does one have to eat in order to bless
God from the Torah because if one
violates the Torah they were they ate
they were satisfied and they didn't
bless the Lord their God afterwards they
violate they missed an opportunity
now we have rabbinic laws the rabbis
made fences so that we wouldn't forget
about the real true Essence and
therefore there is a a minimum how do I
say this a another measurement which is
smaller than the Torah obligation let's
call it partial severity
and the rabbi said you stole Off the
Bench you still have to bless the Lord
your God rabbinically
and the Jews took it on I mean this is
something that's not just rabbinic but
it's it's accepted by Ami Israel by the
Jewish people and Hashem sees this
Hashem sees that we went beyond the
letter of the law because the Torah says
full severity
and the rabbis say partial severity and
we've accepted this and Hashem turns out
he says my my children I didn't expect
this that's beyond the letter of the law
they've taken on themselves as an
obligation to bless rabbinically when
they've eaten less than the amount of
savante and I'll just describe the
amounts an olive size uh worth of bread
versus an egg size worth of bread now
we're really talking about the dough
that could be made into something that
looks much bigger than these
measurements
but nevertheless
um
I can give you like the basic rundown uh
between the the out of size and those
olives what we have today are not
necessarily the olives of Biblical times
but the the amount we have between it's
like there's different opinions in
Judaism but anywhere between 22 to about
33 CC's and uh that's uh and the Egg
volume is like three times that or even
more 55 cc's to 100 cc's
now why am I going into these details
what could possibly be more boring than
hearing you know these details well wait
till you hear this it's not so it's not
so uh boring after all
but before we do this I just want to say
what are we trying to elicit from God
are we trying to bribe God if we do this
right we're especially nice to people
then all of a sudden we're going to get
a great kind of response so we know that
God is not a man he doesn't take bribes
right in chapter 10 of Deuteronomy verse
17.
what does it say
Deuteronomy 10 verse 17 says for the
Lord your God is God of gods and the
lord of the Lords the Great Mighty and
awesome God who will show no favor nor
will he take a bribe right
okay so God will not take a bribe
so in Hebrew Lois upon him he doesn't
show favor
and he doesn't take a bribe okay now
that anything it says in Torah has to be
true right what happens when we see
another verse that seems to contradict
it
so now go to Numbers chapter 6 verse 26.
in other words this is in the Birch when
the priest blessed the Jews on a daily
basis at least here in Israel in
Jerusalem
as we go further away from Jerusalem
different customers numbers yeah six six
verse 26 Numbers chapter 6 verse 26. it
says may the Lord raise his countenance
towards you and Grant you peace
now I know that countenance in favor I
truth is in Hebrew it's the same word
I'm sorry
that Hashem will raise his countenance
to you but it means his face but ye saw
this idea of showing favor the other
verse says upon him and here it says
Hashem will raise his face hello how can
one verse say he doesn't take a bribe
well we're using that idea right he
doesn't show favor because that's really
what you're doing well yeah I'm going to
do all these things and I'll be showered
with all kinds of favor from God on the
other hand it says God does so which is
it
so there's a good morning broccoli
uh chapter 20 I'm sorry page 20 b
uh after a whole long discussion about
the amount of food or bread in this case
sometimes we combine the two bread with
other food to satisfy someone's hunger
so after discussing the quantity of
foods whether they do or do not satisfy
a hunger
um there is this new law rabbinic law
um nevertheless by the rabbis even
though it's less than the amount
and there's a statement here rivervira
taught and some say it was in the Rhema
of Army and some say it was right of
Ashi anyway this is how it goes the
ministering Angels right
the Torah was given to the Jews was
given to mankind
the angels are a little bit
um well sometimes they could be jealous
but basically they're thinking God this
tour is so holy what are you giving it
to them for right they're sinners
whatever there was a whole discussion
obviously the Torah is not for them
because they don't sin they don't have
the Envy they don't have business
partners they don't have any of this
stuff but the conversation begins with
them complaining to the tashem
doesn't it say in your Torah as we just
said in Deuteronomy chapter 10 verse 17.
um that the Great Mighty and awesome God
who favors no one takes no bribe and yet
you show favor to Israel the ministering
Angels notice this right who said a
great pattern he was blessed anybody who
blesses
the Jewish people would be blessed you
show them favor
we see in Numbers Chapter 6 26 right the
Lord will show you favor
so God says back to the angels this is
his response
and how can I not show favor to Israel I
wrote for them in the Torah right as we
saw in Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 10.
um that you're going to eat you're going
to be satisfied and you're going to
bless the Lord of your God
yet you know what happens even when
they're not satisfied they're willing to
exactly to go beyond the letter of the
law
now the words here says even if they
have eaten only an olive size
measurement or an egg size the truth is
it doesn't make any sense because the
gamar we already resolved there's there
is an argument whether it's an egg size
or an owl size but the game already
decided it was going to be the egg size
for the Torah and rabbinically a um an
olive size
so even this this Gamora doesn't really
make a whole lot of sense
um what did Hashem mean when he says
and our size or an exercise
so I kind of want to cut to the chase a
little bit just so I don't you know lose
everybody
we spoke about this verse in Proverbs
right
he was the generous side we'll be
blessed because he gave his own bread to
the poor
if you take that egg size and break it
up into 10 pieces
every single one of you
will have eaten in Olive size because as
we said it's a little bit more than a
third
sorry three times the amount it's a
little bit more than three times the
amount so if you break your own bread
in order to bring nine other people
together
I mean it's an amazing thing because
you're giving to the poor with I don't
know if you want to call without
expectations the expectation is that
you're all going to join together and
bless Hashem together because you gave
them that that is an expectation but
you're giving from your own stomach your
monsieura methods your giving of your
own
meaning you may not be satisfied you
probably won't be I mean it depends what
you ate you know an hour or three hours
before but most likely if you sat down
to eat three egg volumes worth of bread
and then you end up eating just an olive
size but you literally split it with
nine other people I don't know if people
understand that when we get together and
say grace after meals it depends if
there's three people all together eating
we make what we call an invitation to
bless and raise uh hashem's conscience
raise our Consciousness in Hashem and
gratitude
when we have 10 people then we actually
say God's name as well and then there's
a whole bunch of different laws where
there's a hundred thousand ten thousand
imagine six hundred thousand people
getting together and eating together
that'll be an amazing wow and an amazing
um but there is a uh verse in Psalms
chapter 34 verse 4 which this concept is
based on after we eat bread
together and we're gonna do this thing
called Grace after meals birkat Amazon
so chapter 34 verse 4 says if you want
to trans do the English and I'll do the
Hebrew
yeah 34 verse 4 English says declare the
greatness of the Lord with me and let us
exalt his name together so we literally
do this we bring God's name into the
grace after meals
in an introductory way obviously his
name is throughout but in the
introductory what we say out loud we're
inviting other people to come and join
us so in Hebrew Hashem
it's a beautiful verse it's a beautiful
concept right you're inviting other
people to enjoy to declare the greatness
of God with me publicly let us exalt his
name together
so going back to this Proverbs 22 9 the
one who has the generous eye
so the Gomorrah is going to tell us also
he's the one who should bless
in other words he's the one who brings
the the 10 people or three people
whoever's eating together together he
should do the the lead that we'll call
the lead the benching lead the prayers
he's basically blessing God and blessing
those at the table
um but so we're going to read it two
ways the one who has a generous side
will be blessed that obviously means
that the spigot is coming down on him
but he's the one worthy of blessing so
the one who has the spigot so to speak
God's mercy flowing on him like Abraham
has the ability to bless and that's why
it's unbelievable that's why one should
try to join up cling to the Jewish
people they are blessed right right I
will bless those who bless you and you
will in turn get a blessing it can't be
more clear than that
wow
so even though we discussed this idea of
an egg and a
um an egg size and an olive size it
actually comes together in this
fantastic way that if you join with
these other people and you give from
your own because that's literally what
the verse says you're giving from your
own bread
from his bread that's where you will
really get the blessing
and now we understand we have
um
many let me just skip that part
okay I do want to just
sum up this last piece a person who made
no calculations about his own selfish
concern but gave wholeheartedly is
blessed by Hashem
as well without calculation of exactly
what he deserves in return this is the
kindness of avram so going back then
this idea you're not doing this in order
to turn the spigot on it happens to be
the result you have to be aware of this
there's no reason why you couldn't
have this in mind at the same time this
is a reality in a fact
um but to make no calculations just know
it's the right thing
this is what the kindness of avram means
avram's kindness to others was without a
reckoning by following in his footsteps
we Merit hashem's kindness in the same
fashion
now
the next idea from avraham we learn
what we call the akedas yitzkak this is
something we read every morning the
um The Binding of Isaac
which is an amazing story that doesn't
really make sense on the surface right
God had promised avram that his seed
will be his future progeny and then
avraham understood or thought he
understood that he was and he you know
in the end he didn't sacrifice his son
we don't believe in human sacrifice but
his willingness to follow whatever God
said which sounds crazy mashugana right
but that's the willingness to go all the
way now what actually happened was
Hashem already knew from the beginning
this was not going to be that Abram was
not going to uh kill his own son
um in fact the ram that was entangled
was already thought of before creation
which is an interesting thought
but towards the end of our prayers when
we mention The Binding of Isaac
we we ask these words
Master of the Universe May It Be Your
Will to sham our God and God of our
forefathers that you remember for our
sake the Covenant of our forefathers
just as Abraham our forefathers
suppressed his Mercy for his only son
meaning he was willing to kill
or whatever that means
and wish to slaughter him in order to do
your will
that was avram's willingness
so may your mercy suppress your anger
from upon us and may your mercy
overwhelm your attributes
may you overstep with us the line of
your law and deal with us or Hashem our
god with the attributes of kindness and
the attributes of Mercy this is like an
exercise in the total opposite right God
said to Abraham be cruel let's say let's
just say that was the
and avraham whose Essence is kindness
was able to overcome let's say for the
time being
he was able to take his cruelty and make
that strong over his Mercy
and as a result of him doing that even
though that wasn't required of him
in the end we're asking that Hashem do
the same thing in the opposite
okay and that is like a very deep
concept the Hebrew is much beautiful
than the English translation
so we're asked that God remember the uh
the company made with our forefathers
I mean we're really asking for for Mercy
from this situation that Abram himself
took
so there's a concept always called
measure for measure right where's the
measure for measure here
so let's go into this a little bit
in our morning darling right we recite
the Acadia which is The Binding of that
Isaac
Isaac it's called the test of avraham
it's not called the test of Isaac Isaac
represented strict Justice and he
actually wanted to be sacrificed he was
willing to be it's not his test it's
avram's test who embodied uh so much
kindness and cancer that went against
his nature didn't go against Isaac's
name in fact the measures tells us that
Isaac actually spontaneously combusted
on the Altar and was flashed into a pile
of Ashes
okay and this is when the the Sutton or
somehow message gets to Sarah that her
son died she has a heart attack and dies
now this idea that the Satan it couldn't
tell a lie right the Sutton has to be
honest for the sun to somehow let her
know that her son died
there had to be some essence of truth to
it
okay so the truth is he it wasn't his
test he was willing to be sacrificed
this is part of the story
so we're asking Justice avraham avinu
subdued his Mercy in order to do your
will wholeheartedly so too you may you
may your mercy subdue your anger
now someone once asked well where is
this measure for measure exactly it
doesn't make sense we're like explain it
try to explain what does it mean measure
for measure here
now it would make sense to ask for
hashem's mercy in the Merit of avraham's
Mercy oh just as avram was so nice and
kind so you got should be nice and kind
isn't that we're saying like it elicited
uh kindness
so how can we ask for his Mercy in the
Merit of avram's apparent display of
Cruelty in obeying Hashem to bring his
son as a sacrifice
so the midrus tells us that when avraham
and musak were on the way to perform the
sacrifice the Satan came and tried to
dissuade avraham in a whole conversation
I'll try to go through it he said old
man why are you going to kill your son
you know this is uh you he you know you
got him when you're such an old age
you're gonna just kill him I mean this
is a
it's avram said so what even so God told
me I'm going to do it
so then the Sutton says you know maybe
tomorrow God's going to command you to
kill yourself too what are you going to
do kill yourself
uh Rob said yes that's what it means
I'll do it
and he says and if you kill him tomorrow
you know people are going to call you a
murderer I remember says so what they'll
call me a murderer who cares
so when the sudden Soul he had no power
to convince avram otherwise so he turned
to Yitzhak
and he tried to scare him out of
participating in the Acadia he too is
unmoved
the verse says now this is in Genesis 22
8.
you have it you want to read it
Genesis 22 8 reads and Abraham said
Hashem will provide for himself the lamb
for the burnt offering my son and they
both went together so Isaac obviously
asked like Hey Dad didn't you say we're
like going to make the sacrifice where's
the lamb and I'll probably sure don't
worry you know God will provide and it
says they won't they both went together
in Hebrew
what does it mean they both went
together they both went with an
understanding whatever it is whatever's
going to be is going to be Hashem made
the command to avram Yitzhak was a
willing participant they went together
with the same mind frame one Accord one
heart to do it yeah Isaac actually
understood that he may be he may be that
slaughtered uh you know that on the
altar there
they went with equal resolve one two is
one to slaughter the Son and the other
one to be slaughtered
so our prayers to Hashem are indeed
measure for measure what did avraham do
avram ignored the claims of the Satan
he ignored you know the satin is the
prosecutor he's very careful he sees
everything we do wrong I mean he kind of
set it up didn't he so he's telling
Hashem and trying to persecute prosecute
prosecute Us by reminding Hashem so to
speak putting in the the you know in the
courtroom the the prosecuting attorney
reminding the court what what happened
writing ourselves reminding the world
okay so Hashem is ignoring the sudden
just like avraham ignored the Satin
so too Hashem will ignore the
prosecuting attorney which only brings
judgment and harsh decree this is an
amazing way to think about it so I'll
read it again avram ignored the claims
of the Sutton when he tried to dissuade
him from obeying hashem's will even
though its claims seem to be correct
that's true right that the something is
not going to make up any lies he's going
to tell you exactly and not even
exaggerated right exactly what happened
so too we pray that Hashem May ignore
the Satan's accusations against
Abraham's descendants even when the
claims seem to be correct this is the
attribute of
kindness to Abram it Intel it entails
kindness Beyond calculations of what is
fair
and what is deserved according to a
person's Deeds
beyond the letter of the law
especially to those who practice
kindness
then Hashem will show in in in
response hashems Co shows kindness
without any reserve he'll also act
beyond the letter of the law it's not a
bribe it's the way the system is set up
okay
okay there's another example
um
okay before we get to that example we're
going to talk about the war with the
Four Kings and the five Kings but before
we get to that the medrish comments on
the verse we had dealt with last week
give true to yaakov I say last week the
last session number ten and this session
11 is the kindness diagram but it's like
one sentence
who give true to yaakov and kindness to
Abra
when Russia shunned that the Angels ask
Hashem why do you show such favoritism
to the Jewish people
and Hashem responds I show them Merit I
show them favor in the Merit of Abraham
what Merit do they have the Angels asked
so avram's father
he was an idol salesman
manufacturer right distributor yeah
distributor
so I was found Tara gave
I'm from Idols to sell in the
marketplace so rather than sell them we
know that avram destroyed them and he
put this ax in the big one's hands and
when his father came home he says
what happened he says you know the big
guy he did it the father says are you
kidding me they're just Idols they can't
do Adidas anyway what happened avram
destroys them along with all the idols
in the market and throughout the world
this is what the Jew is the Jew is the
Idol idol destruct Destroyer where
that's what an eve Ray that's what the
Hebrew means they cross over from where
from the land of illusions to the land
of Truth Eric's Canon the land of Israel
where you breathe in wisdom where okay I
don't want to get too carried away here
but basically that's what the Jew does
avraham sanctified my name in the world
this is what we do therefore Hashem
shows favoritism towards his descendants
ichio Rosh Hashanah
furthermore avram devoted himself to
Castle in every form
with Hashem himself by spreading the
light of faith of his faith throughout
the world with mankind even the Arabs
right they know that Ibraham whatever
they I don't know exactly how they
pronounce it but they basically hold he
was in each he was full of they
understand Ishmael comes from avraham
and they do whatever that means they do
a lot of hasid supposedly allegedly I
don't want to you know get into the
politics here but there is amongst many
Muslims righteous Muslims they really do
Express uh the kindness that avraham had
expressed
um okay so now let's go into the next
example which was
um there was a refugee from the war
there were these five Kings I'm sorry
there were these Four Kings and they
created a war and they
kidnapped Lots the nephew of the nephew
of avram and this um the in Genesis
Chapter 14 verse 13.
got it 14 verse 13 says and The Fugitive
came and he told Abraham the Hebrew and
he was living in the plane of mammary
the Amorite the brother of eshkol and
the brother of Honor who were Abraham's
Confederates okay so this fugitive that
came and told Abraham the Hebrew about
Lots um uh what's the word
um taken captive
okay so according to according to Rashi
and according to the simple explanation
this was OG OG later on who Bashan and
sikhan uh the war in the desert
basically
um Oak had survived the flood right how
can anybody survive the flood the
measures tells us that he held on to the
side of the Ark Noah's Ark but he was
way back because he was one of the
nephilian one of these great uh Giants
that roamed the world before the flood
and he obviously if this is for the
story we understand that this fugitive
that's who the future was the Fugitive
from and the flood was none other than
OG but see OG really wanted to marry
Sarah
so
he wanted avraham to be damaged by going
and trying to save loads in other words
if somebody had it in for Abram it
wouldn't it would be no other than OG
who Wants Sarah to marry but how are you
going to get rid of avram he's a Mighty
Guy well you send him out to war you
tell him you know which was true load
had been
um taken captive in his hopes that avron
would then be killed and then he would
be
um free to pursue as a Suitor I guess uh
Sarah
now the story goes like this that the
king of Saddam came out toward him and
he they have these Four Kings were the
ones that were the bad guys these five
Kings come and basically hold avram in
high esteem and won a crown him as like
The Prince and basically uh he goes and
he fights with Eliezer by the way his
servant it was just him and Elias it
says they were
316 uh people with him but really it was
was just him and elieza the Camacho of
Eliezer is 316. and so they together
miraculously fight these five Kings
um I'm sorry the Four Kings and they
take all the booty and what do they do
with the booty first of all it was the
king of sidom who lost a lot of stuff in
this war and by Abra I'm coming back and
captioned and recapturing it
how do you think the king of sadong
feels well this is like my stuff but
avram's the one who wiped out we could
have had total annihilation
from these Four Kings we made a
Confederate
avron basically took the whole thing
spoiled the war yeah Spoils of War who
they really belong to according to the
second king of Saddam it really
truthfully by the letter of the law
belongs to Abraham but I in my heart of
hearts feel a connection to my own stuff
so this is a little bit of a problem
and by the way in verse 18 we see that
Melchizedek the king of Salem by the way
that's that's shame okay that's shame
the son of Noah who's the great great
great grandfather of of Abraham
um so basically he's the one who made
um Libations and sacrifices to God
and he was the priest avraham gave him a
tenth so he gave mountek the the shame
the the messenger of God so to speak
uh he was a priest so he gave him the
the ten percent so how do you think the
king of Saddam is feeling at this point
even in verse 19 Roman chapter 14. for
sure
yep see and he blessed out he blessed
Abraham and he said Blessed Be Abraham
the most high God it possesses Heaven
and Earth again we know that he gave him
the tenth verse 21 the king of Saddam
says to avram give me the souls and the
possessions take for yourself notice he
wants his people back
not as slaves for Abram or whatever but
basically he wants everything not
everything he wants at least the people
back let Abram take the possessions now
what kind of negotiation is this
everything really belongs to Abraham
he says
I I want I want something out of it
you know what avram does his response
take it off
now you know and I know we started this
conversation what happened we went
through this in our Genesis class pretty
pretty closely it's beautiful stuff what
come what happens when the guy comes to
you and he's demanding
and you said in the beginning well
there's like you know it's almost
criminal I mean like I thought I had
free choice and I have to give it to him
no if this is the choice you make
avram said I don't want to take anything
from you let's look in verses 22 and 23
yeah he says neither a thread uh to a
shoe strap nor will I take from whatever
is yours that you should not say I have
made Abraham wealthy
okay so avram doesn't want to take
anything and think because you know what
Aram knew his wealth is dependent on
Hashem not on this
I don't know what you want to call it oh
Saddam was not a righteous guy okay he
was the king I said no we all know about
Saddam so
think about it rather than be tainted in
any way he could have just split it like
according to the demand but he gave
everything back he says I don't want any
of it
so let's let's go through this story a
little bit
and how
we're going to explain it
um just cut to the chase here
so the king of Saddam saw the treasures
of his own kingdom slipping through his
hands from a logical perspective he
realized that avram had a fair claim to
them
avram had risked his life in a battle to
reclaim them and they really were his by
right
in his heart
meaning in avram's heart however the
king of Saddam felt cheated meaning like
she said like this avram understood that
the king of Saddam in his heart
felt cheated they were the Treasures of
the king of subdom after all
so then the king of Sudan made a
compromise oh uh give me the captives
and you keep the treasure for yourself
so avram could have and he did he must
have read between the lines
both the captives and the treasures
really already has it already belong to
avraham he didn't need anyone's
permission to keep the treasures he had
rightfully won in the battle so why then
did the king of sedon feel the need to
tell him that he could keep them
clearly
the King still thought they were his I
mean it takes a lot of wisdom you're
negotiating you understand this person
who's here to even come to me and say
you know you keep passing it uh hello
you really believe that it all belongs
to you that's what I've understood in
the heart of hearts of the king of
Saddam
then raises his hand and swore that he
would take nothing from The Spoils of
battle from the shoot from the thread of
shoestrap I will take nothing now yeah I
would say again drum roll please when
you hear this the Jewish people Bene
Israel were joked to do Mitzvahs right
these Mitzvahs two of them in particular
the titsis and the tefillin come
according to the measures as a result of
avram's own response I won't even take
the shoestrap right the the threat or
the shoestrap
so here it goes like this
avram avinu had every right to keep the
spoils of the battle but he felt the
pain
I am justified or not from the king of
sedome and he saw the king felt cheated
therefore he acted with him beyond the
letter of the law beyond the dictates of
fairness and Justice he gave everything
to him he gave him back the spoils
Hashem saw avram's outstanding display
of consideration above and beyond the
dictates of fairness in the Merit of the
thread that Iran returned his
descendants received the midst of the
tequilis the the string of the titsus
and in the Merit of the shoe strap they
received the Mitzvah to filling
okay it's amazing thing because this is
wow physical items that we use to get
close to Hashem these are our Treasures
okay so this is an amazing idea I've
never had anybody Explain the origin
there
and what about the sale of the maratha
right there's this uh treasured burial
place in cabron and cured arba right
who's buried there four couples it's
called period arba is havron
that's really the where Heaven meets
Earth to a certain extent I mean
Jerusalem has its own unique place but
this is like the opening the Char to gun
Aiden
okay it's a very special place because
who's buried there
Abraham and uh Sarah that's true you go
there you see the the markings Abraham
Sarah
you have Yitzhak and Rifka and you have
yaakov and Leia but guess what there's
four couples Adam and Eve avram had a
tradition that's where Adam and Eva
buried this is the Gate of gun Aiden
okay the Garden of Eden
and it was worth a lot to him for the
special place of buying it as a burial
place not just for himself his wife
isn't the head of uh uh uh Esau in there
as well that's true that's true
so very true so
it's a place I want to visit when I come
to Israel first oh you have to I'd love
to take you there well let's make you
let's make it uh yeah put it in a diary
go there any excuse to go there I'll
give you a real behind the scenes uh
what's the word uh tour with the tourism
you're on yeah all right for sure
and we'll go see where Ruth is buried
where yishai is buried we'll take you to
Abraham's Springs that where he took the
Mikvah
yeah we'll take you uh okay so that's
exciting after avram had experienced the
10 tests and he wants to bury his wife
she had passed away
he wanted to buy a very special place
so he comes to beneface and he speaks to
Ephron the head of the family he wanted
to buy this special place at the end of
the field
now he wanted to and he intended to pay
full price
but there was a whole negotiation that
goes on
so Ephron first says no my master hear
me
hear me means what does hear me mean
understand me
don't just listen to the words right all
right understand like we say Israel hear
a wisdom the Lord is your God lord as
well doesn't mean just listen it means
let it penetrate your heart understand
right when you say you know you're
having a conversation and someone says
yeah I see I see what you're saying you
don't I see what you mean I understand
what you're saying something I hear what
you're saying same thing
so he says hear me he's like really
opening his heart
I have given you the field he really
wanted to give it away for free no he
wanted money but let's see and the cave
that's in it I've also given you
I've given them to you in the presence
of my Kinsmen go ahead bury your dead so
avram heard not only the words right but
the feelings that were behind them this
takes a lot of wisdom and a lot of
sensitivity and a lot of empathy
when he said hear me all all of a sudden
it means there are things beyond the
words that I'm saying but you should
understand
and from s here not only my words
but my real meaning since my words are
only to impress my Kinsmen who are
standing around us listening avram heard
and understood from ephron's real intent
he also had his own reasons for wanting
to give in other words avram wanted to
pay full price
he didn't accept a gift he wanted it to
be his
avram then took out his money he was
totally prepared to pray pay
the price that for the small burial plot
at the edge of this field
uh that he knew what it was really worth
Ephraim saw the money
and right away blurted out hear me my
mess he said again hear me my master a
land worth 400 silver shekels what is it
between us barrier dead he he right away
wanted to take the money because avraham
knew that it was really about the money
hear me I need the money
at that point avram could have started
haggling that's right you could start
and he might have gotten him down
in other words we're talking about going
beyond the lead of the law you want to
follow the letter law you pay the fair
price
but if you want to go beyond the letter
law you give the price he mentioned he
gave the top
he gave the top uh price and not only
that what did avram do in return He gave
him the best currencies pure silver okay
so not only did he get he could have get
money I don't know 400 tackles and
camels right right okay silver
so um we've haggled to get the burial
plot spot uh uh price down to the real
value he could have complained to the
people he was negotiating with were
standing around watching the public sale
he could have demanded fairness and
justice but no avraham heard Ephron he
heard what he was really saying in his
heart he heard the heart he understood
his feelings and he gave Ephron the
price he had asked for even though it
was way far beyond a fair price
not only that right we said he took uh
one step further and he gave him silver
currency
now in both these cases Abram exercised
the attribute of give truthiakov on one
hand he was giving the fair price he
understood the truth of the other
person's perspective and treated them
accordingly however what avram did he
took one step further
the king of Saddam and both Ephron they
both knew they were wrong
that they had no right to make such
demands nevertheless avram treated them
beyond the dictates of fairness and gave
them what they wanted keep this in mind
in return Hashem deals with him and his
descendants with the same attribute
kindest avraham
uh The Last Story we're going to deal
with is the um the famine that struck
Eric's Israel
actually there's one other thing topic
we want to talk about on a kabbalistic
level
but let's talk about it so Yitzhak there
was a famine and he wanted here he
thought maybe I'll go to Egypt God
specifically tells him
in Genesis 26 2
if you want to read it
26 2 and the Lord appeared to him and
said do not go down to Egypt dwell in
the land that I will tell you
right so what was my place here here we
go do not dissent Egypt dwell in the
land I will tell you I'm sorry the
Hebrew is
Raima don't go down
there it's a share and more aleja but
I'm telling you to stay here okay
in the end of this revelation God
actually blesses Yitzhak in the name of
his father
right why did he bless him in the name
of his father go to Genesis 26 5. I want
to talk about a few verses later
he's blessing he's blessing
because of something because Abraham
hearkened to my voice and kept my charge
and my Commandments my statutes and my
instructions very good so I'm blessing
you Yitzhak because something avram did
akev is because of
cause of avraham Ashish because he
listened to my voice the Ishmael
Marti this is the words we're going to
use that he guarded my guardings and he
translated as he kept my charge
my statutes vittorothai and my Torah
my instructions now the majoration terms
interprets the wording of the verse that
avram kept hashem's guard
the Ashmore mishmarti right he guarded
my guardings
to me that he took responsible for
hashem's tasks
hashem's attribute of kindness ascended
before him and he praised Abram's deep
basically God was saying as long as
avram is in the world I don't need to
work I can basically sit back and relax
because avron practices kindness in my
place it's an amazing concept
avram's mission was to spread kindness
throughout the world he spread kindness
even to the guilty remember the original
question what if someone doesn't deserve
it
what if somebody has taken advantage
we saw these these examples king of
Saddam I know he's taking advantage but
he certainly didn't deserve it and Efron
certainly didn't deserve it and yet
avron paid the full price basically to
both of them
so he spread kindness even to the guilty
that's what Outreach is helping them
return to do the will of their father in
Heaven he was generous even to those who
were unworthy
remember we said if you're going to be
generous to the Unworthy certainly you
should be generous to the worthy right
that's how we start in the beginning but
you're going to inspire them to do truva
right you're going to inspire them to
you know he would take people to his
home and give him futi and they say you
know can we pay you
says no no you pay Hashem just make a
bracha to Hashem if you don't pay him
respect then you he gave him a bill a
really high bill right I'm not
interested in the money I'd rather you
think a
he was trying to share uh this monarchy
ethical manotheism to the world
so
Not only was he generous to those who
were unworthy thus inspiring them to do
truma all these are the traits of Hashem
that's what God does exercises through
his attribute of kindness avram stood in
the place of this attribute spreading
hashem's kindness throughout the world
um
now there's an idea
in
Genesis 21 33
.
[Music]
33 he says and he planted in I shall in
beersheva uh and he called there in the
name of the Lord the word the god of the
world
okay so as he planted an eschel it's a
special Tree in beersheva
Now what is
so
avraham's set in motion this kindness in
this world he planted the tree escho in
their Sheba and he publicized there the
name of Hashem god of the world eschel's
an acronym NOW the acronym people say
different things but it's Lima
aleph shin lamid all hell's food Stiers
drink and Lena's lodging
so avram offered his food freely to all
he called upon them to serve Hashem he
spoke to their hearts planting seeds of
amuna this this tree until they returned
to the truth path he sought the benefit
he sought to benefit even terrible
Sinners who else are you going to do
Outreach to who are you going to
befriend if they're not off the path
Hashem revealed his plans to destroy
Saddam right Hashem revealed the plans
to whom to avram and avram could plea on
their behalf did Abram not try to
negotiate how many people would change
your mind if we couldn't find 50 45 40
right 30.
right
okay so that's all in Genesis chapter
18. okay
now this is a little bit uh metaphysical
kabbalistic
and for those are familiar how to kosher
to kosher make fit Jewish pots and pans
when we went to war you can look it up
in numbers 31 verse 23. so we go to war
and we end up with pots and pans from
the enemy now they probably ate pork
non-kosher who knows what maybe a camel
milk who knows what they cooked in these
pots and pans
but the way the pots and pans work if
anybody ever saw Jews getting ready for
Passover we either use boiling hot water
takasha and
it depends on how the pot was used to
cook the non-kosher food and if it was
with direct fire or dry heat then it
requires direct fire dry heat so that's
why people use blow torches on certain
objects so you could go from some let's
say you had cold camel milk in your
glass
so the only cost you the only thing you
need to do to fix it is to rinse it out
with cold water and maybe some soap and
that's kosher but if it was like you
know boiling soup and you messed it up
with some milk and meat in there so then
you need hot boiling water but again if
it was like an oven and a dry heat so
then you need something more powerful
okay so that's like our souls okay our
souls it's like an analogy if you want
to read numbers 31 verse 23 for us
yeah 31 23 uh whatever is used in fire
you shall pass through fire and then it
will be clean it must however also be
cleansed with sprinkling water and
whatever is not used in fire you shall
pass through water
now Rabbi when I had this conference
here in November and I uh I had a guest
house put together for the rabbis and I
had the rabbi in the town next door his
wife prepared a bundle a beautiful
kosher meals uh even still uh
um Rabbi scobach gave me some specifics
uh to tell the guest uh The Keeper of
the guest house to uh
uh Aid them in making the kitchen kosher
and uh for me that was kind of a first
uh uh experience in seeing that done but
you know because all they had to do was
very reheat these pre-made meals that
were extra packaged well I mean the
rabbi
rabbits in up in Kelowna was just
awesome and the food was just delicious
I'm glad it was a success
um so it is complicated but the the the
the vessels themselves have to be
converted by going to the Mikvah like
being baptized so to speak that's a
familiar word
um but in addition to that and not all
items depends what the item is
um and then again they have to be
cautioned and fit for
for the Heat and so as we described so
the the explanation here
is that this is based on the Zohar
the importance of
this is why I don't understand why a
non-jew wouldn't want to do has it it's
logical it's ethical
it's following the instructions of the
of the of the Jews again not in every
detail are you obligated but why
wouldn't you want to be blessed the
importance of hasid in purifying our
souls can be understand better in light
of the czar which compares the
purification of souls after their
passing to the caution of kitchen
utensils so the really righteous person
who does a lot of sadaka that's sadaka
right it's Cedric Garrett Cedric means a
person who fully converted to Judaism
means uh righteous
so if you're a Bend off and you want to
be a righteous among the Gentiles
why not to do to do hasid and kindness
so while you're still alive
see the righteous person after they die
if they really you know
tried their best made a few mistakes on
the way they'll be like a glass vessel
that just needs to be rinsed out to cold
water
the other way you know
and then unfortunately if we have a
period of our lives and we're maybe we
weren't even that uh kind and perfect
and whatnot we have
penalties to pay so you might have
deeper scrubbing yeah
dipped in a hot water now this purging
it's a purging it's very short-lived but
it could be very painful but
nevertheless you have an opportunity to
fix that here in this world
so um and then of course for those who
are very uh naughty let's say they may
need the the fire the what do you call
the blow torch but either way the point
is that you have this world to cleanse
yourself in this world so listen to the
words here
um
so the these utensils that we just
described the different types of
utensils and the different uh processes
whether it's cold water
or hot water or a blow torch are
represented by the Jews so which is the
vessel that contains God's presence
those who kindled the fire with their
yet Sahara right the Yates areas the
evil inclination it's like it it's like
it boils it's uh it's a kindling of the
fire
so uh they chased her after their lowly
passions in this world obviously you
have to be purified to the fires of
ganim and those who were lessly Wicked
in their lifetimes boiling water would
suffice
they have to be scolded by the Gahanna
to purify their souls before they can
Ascend they're going to Ghanaian and
they're going to go to the world to come
to ex to have eternal Bliss but there
has to be a purification process
those who even more witness Wicked
kindled the fires of each other to even
greater degree must pass directly
Through the flames in order to expunge
the greater degrees evil which they
observed their lifetimes and the
righteous however purified through cold
water alone the mercy and kindness they
practice in their lifetimes cooled down
the Yates around in other words the
yetson represents the fire and passion
to do evil well guess what the cold the
coldness meaning the when you do
kindness
it's like cold water being splashed
right onto your Yates are around it's
like almost a secure wave making sure
you don't go in the wrong direction it's
usually your guidance it's an amazing
thing because there's so many
repercussions to doing the right thing
and repercussions you know consequences
of doing the right thing
therefore the fires of getting him have
no power over them it's enough for them
to immerse once in the Cool Waters of
Purity and then they ascend directly to
God and Adam
now there's still another character that
was after you die what about why you're
still alive
you still have time to correct your
mistakes
these souls are compared to another
category Earth can wear vessels now this
is going to be this is going to sound
tragic the earthenware vessel once it
becomes not pure it can never be
cautioned it can only be cracked and
broken and then re-um
you know you can remake it in other
words if it's earthenware like the gray
one if you grind it down and you can add
water or whatever and make it a new so
this is an amazing idea because man
really is compared to an earthenware
vessel we've come from the Adama man is
Adam from The Adama and as long as a
person lives he can purify his soul
uh by breaking it with the contrite and
humble heart so look in Psalms 51 19.
51 Psalm 51 19. the sacrifices of Hashem
are a broken Spirit oh God you will not
despise a broken and crushed heart
I mean it's really beautiful but I mean
this is King David is really the theme
throughout Psalms
um I just want to read the Hebrew if I
can and because I'm sure
and some just beautiful it's Beauty it's
a beauty
and 19.
SIV Taylor Kim ruak nishibara
broken Spirit lab nishbar
this is what God will not despise love
to his best this is unbelievable so
again
it's in this world when you are faced
with an up its choice
you feel maybe this person takes the
advantage of you because it's he doesn't
have Justice on his side
but you are going beyond the letter of
the law
by choice
you make that choice you are being
humbled you are humbling yourself you
are breaking yourself down to a point
where everyone's gonna you're a friar
you're you're being taken advantage of
no it doesn't matter it's a choice don't
think it's not a choice you have this
choice
and it will break you down in order to
build you up better and that's a simple
explanation
I'll just read the last few sentences
here from here we see how important it
is for a person to control his evil
inclination to protect yourself uh with
positive action with like being kind to
people
right and to stand up to the tests of
life so that you may Merit the goodness
and blessing not only in this world but
the next world as well
you will be blessed in this world right
even a benoff who came to the conclusion
these laws are reasonable not because
God commanded them but because they make
sense yeah
he she will be blessed in this world
you'll you'll get blessed in this world
you know it's been asked like so why
don't they get the world to come it's
only the one that believes it's in a God
and believes that God can
if you don't believe in God why would
God give you something you don't want
God is so kind the guy doesn't believe
in God he doesn't believe in the world
to come he doesn't believe in the
spiritual world and what God's going to
give you Eternal Bliss that's not what
you want he'll give you exactly what you
want you'll be blessed
oddly die in this world right no limit
in this world but that's it only in this
world so bizarat Hashem the people
listening Jews non-jews should all you
know ask ourselves some important
questions about life be open-minded to
what the Torah has to say try to
investigate is this really true was
there a revelation 3 300 years ago am I
as a non-jew obligated in keeping these
seven major principles are there
subcategories are there things I can do
to go beyond the letter of the law
keep any of the additional Mitzvahs
provided they do it in order to receive
reward not because they think they're
obligated but in order to receive reward
the whole idea means that you believe in
god what kind of reward
I mean maybe you do as a atheist that
believes there's a reward in this world
I think if you're already at that point
and you believe that there are positive
repercussions repositive consequences of
your actions there must be something
greater running everything and be
open-minded to the idea that um there is
a God that took the Jewish people out of
Egypt in order to be elected to the
Nations to be their servants to be their
priests and then maybe you can open your
mind and listen to what they have to say
hmm yeah it's a beautiful lesson today
Rabbi I just in my mind's still
processing about the purging of the the
pots and uh the connection there it's
just like whoa such a new thought that
it's just like oh it's seaming together
all kinds of light bulbs are popping off
in the brain and like pop rocks and I
gotta digest it really uh uh but uh
wonderful wonderful I mean so enjoying
this series Tomer dvora learning uh the
the the attributes of hashem's mersey
but how it interplays with us and how it
interplays in this world it's just
phenomenal phenomenal material for sure
more efficient well Rabbi I know your
