Your Shabbat meal is over and there are
crumbs all over your tablecloth. Are you
allowed to take your tablecloth and to shake
the crumbs into the air in your backyard? One
of the Melachot of Shabbat is the Melacha of
Zoreh, which means winnowing. They would take
the grain that was still mixed with light
peels and they would throw it up into the
air and the wind would come and blow the light
peels away and the grain would fall back down.
This Melacha only involves using the wind
to blow things and to spread things. But
simply shaking your crumbs into the
air is not a problem on Shabbat.
